They are made from three separately farmable ingredients, which incentivizes the construction of unique farming infrastructure, but can also be farmed manually early on. The chickens don't die, they only get exploited for their eggs :3 and all three farms can eventually be automated - and with the autocrafter, you can even fully automate pie production now! Of course you can also buy them from villagers, but again, tedious.
I think this is how good food should work in Minecraft - made from multiple ingredients that can't be eaten by themselves, and providing a truly rewarding experience. Pumpkin pies are nutritionally just barely below steaks and carrots, but so much more fun to play with. This is why I believe they are the best food source in the game.
Honorary mention: Suspicious stew with saturation is the only nonstackable food that's worth considering and I highly recommend playing with it for a while if you have the mooshrooms available :3
@stella@tech.lgbtBy numbers, pumpkin pie isn't the best (though still near the top). But that's not how I judge the food. Let's first see why I don't prefer its biggest contenders:
Best in terms of numbers, but that's the issue - they're too easy. You can get a bunch of this food really early on, and because it's the most efficient, there is no reason to ever switch to another food source - these foods trivialize the nutrition aspect of the game and thus remove something you could otherwise have much more fun with! I think their numbers should be nerfed a lot to make other foods more appealing to more players. (Also I always feel bad for killing animals :c)
