I've been investigating the decline of @… 's IRC channel. It's been in operation since late 2006 but has been getting pretty quiet of late.
I thought I'd analyse my logs to see what we're talking about. Here's my first attempt.
I think I should probably make it per day not per hour. A point per hour may be excessive for 17 years of data!

More on female population estimates: a line graph of cohort vs a Lexis diagram (heatmap). The same info but curious how each makes the patterns partially clear in a different way. The linegraph gives a somewhat better picture by time, good by cohort when the patterns is clear but gets lost when they cross a lot. Lexis diagram makes cohort picture clearer: follow each row. But a little harder to see calendar time effects.
See

Line graph of female population estimates, Ireland, 1961-2008 cohorts. See linked thread for description.
Lexis diagram of same info: heat map with cohort on y-axis, calendar year on x-axis, cell colour indexing population size.

#RustLang is doing great!
You've probably heard that #uv is the future of #Python packaging. Unfortunately, it indirectly depends on "ring" crate. Ring uses a lot of non-portable C/Assembly, effectively meaning that uv only runs on a handful of architectures (much fewer than Rust itself, and I've been complaining about Rust…).
Well, there are some good news. Rustls 0.23 no longer uses ring by default, so there's hope. But to realize that hope, first all dependency graph must switch to the new Rustls version, people need to make releases, update their locks…
Yes, it's a great design!

So far in my job (Which is admittedly science-related, but remember I'm a UI engineer) I have used:
- graph traversal and layout algorithms
- search algorithms
- a ton of geometry
- non-linear scaling
- deferred update lists
- tree traversal algorithms
- data compression algorithms
- string search algorithms

arxiv_authors: Arxiv authors (1993-2003)
Scientific collaborations between authors of papers submitted to arxiv.org, under 5 categories: gr-qc, astro-ph, cond-mat, hep-ph, and hep-th categories, spanning January 1993 to April 2003.
