When I was in kindergarten, my teacher had us all play Musical Chairs. If you don’t know the game, it works like this: N children march around a circle of N-1 chairs while music plays. When the music stops, all the children scramble to sit. The one without a chair is excluded, one chair is removed from the circle, and the game repeats until only one child remains.
I was, apparently, good at this game.

I learned this concept as a teacher: Is it fair to penalize a student for missing an assignment or an exam, for being sick, for medical or family emergencies?
Not everything needs to be "graded", and when we do grade, the student who was sick shouldn't have to do extra work to make up a missed exam. My approach was to drop the lowest scoring assignments and exam, with no invasive questions on justification for whatever is going on in their lives.
