I've been a member of the RSGS for almost 30 years and still never visited the Fair Maid's house. Maybe I should 🤔 It looks lovely...
mastodon.social/@Infoseepage/1
Infoseepage@mastodon.social - Today I walked into Perth and visited the Scottish Geographic Society's digs in the Fair Maid's House.  It was, in its heyday, a sort of Scottish adventurers club. They've got an interesting reference library and an overstuffed map room. Ernest Shackleton was briefly secretary of the society and they have some of his stuff on display.

I find this map especially amusing in that in 1893, 238 colonists departed Australia (purportedly nonexistent) to found the New Australia colony in Paraguay (ditto).
Of course, Australia didn’t federate till 1901, so it could be argued that Australia didn’t *actually* exist at the time. And given Paraguay’s tremendous (but still hotly contested) losses in the 1864-70 Paraguayan War, the latter country was itself hanging on by a thread.

Sometimes I'm falsely credited with discovering the North Bernal Wiggle, the low-traffic bike route up to Bernal Heights Park that avoids steeper slopes. But it was actually Brian Coyne who told me about it.

A route from Cesar Chavez St south on Alabama, east on Mullen, south on Brewster, west on Rutledge, south on Franconia, then west to the eastern edge of Bernal Heights Park. This is drawn in a different color onto a City map of bike routes in and around Bernal Heights.

First images of the Sun's south pole!
Solar Orbiter is the first space probe to look at the Sun's poles – and finds the magnetic field there in a state of turmoil. The Sun's magnetic field is currently undergoing a flip. During its latest flyby of the Sun at the end of March this year, the Solar Orbiter space probe had its first clear view of our star's poles. First images:

This image shows a magnetic field map from Solar Orbiter's Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (PHI) instrument, centred on the Sun's south pole. Blue indicates positive magnetic field, pointing towards the spacecraft, and red indicates negative magnetic field. On an off-set concentric grid with an overall yellow base color, blue and red bent stripe-like structures are sprinkled across the field of view. © ESA & NASA/Solar Orbiter/PHI Team, J. They're wearing matching green and white/silver colored outfits that have a utilitarian, space-age design - possibly uniforms or protective gear. Both individuals have dark, curly hair typical of late 1970s styling. The woman appears concerned or apprehensive, while th…

Amsterdam is celebrating its 750th anniversary. Tomorrow, this will be celebrated with activities on a large section of the ring road: for one day, there will be a bit more city for people and less for cars. Hopefully, this will be an appetiser for more.
