Every week, Metacurity delivers our free and paid subscribers a run-down of the top infosec-related long reads we didn't have time for during the daily crush of cyber news.
This week's selection covers
--Massive surveillance in Mexico City leaves crime high,
--Workplace surveillance can harm workers,
--Machine learning privacy attacks are less effective in reality than they are in theory,
--LLMs produce more secure code when trained on flaw-free code,

one of my hottest takes is that shared laundry machines in an apartment building is better than in-unit. it's a good example of how individual solutions can be worse than collective ones.
with shared machines you can use two machines at once at a less-busy time. a single in-unit machine would take twice as long. in-unit means the noise the machine generates is inside your apartment, so you can't have guests over or take a meeting while it's running

A: "I don't understand how you're so relaxed when you don't hear from the kids. Everyone in my family is like, 'msg me right when you get home!'"
me: "Ah, [13yo] is fine. He went home and is 100% watching videos when he's not supposed to be, hoping we forgot about him so that he can get away w/ as much screen time as he can. If he were stuck on the subway or something, he'd have messaged. Actually, I'd be more worried if he DID message.&qu…

A chat log, part 1:

me: Did you make it home?

13yo: yes

me: And then say to yourself, "well it's after screentime, so I should be a good child and get ready for bed!" ?

13yo: no

me: Or did you say to yourself,

13yo: I'm watching movie rn
13yo: sorry, getting another call, bye!

me: "Oh man, it's so nice without mom dad
me: "Oh man, it's so nice without mom, dad, and [8yo] here. I get as much screen time as I want. Muahahaha" ?
me: 🤨😀

13yo: Please leave a message at the tone
13yo: BOOOP

me: Damn it, I was talking to the machine again. I always do that!

Today alone, I've:
* received a message confirming an "upcoming" appointment for 12/12 that I actually attended -- without a time machine -- last Friday
* tried to access my healthcare insurance provider (attached image)
#US #healthcare is so terribly lost.

A screen capture of an error message that is entitled, "Service Unavailable". It then says, "the server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later."

Valve are launching a new controller and a new gaming computer and a new VR headset early next year.
My main question is, don't people release these things in time for Christmas any more? Maybe it's running late.
Kinda need a media PC for the new bedroom in December. Do I want to wait until early next year? Grr. Needs to run two monitors and a projector really too, which may be tricky for a machine with only two video ports.
A VR headset that isn't owned by Facebook will be a blessed relief. Designed to run on Linux? Amazing. Hope it's brilliant.
Don't think I have much use for the controller though. Only really play games in VR these days.
Looks great! Three months too late!

Watched Solar Opposites, a cartoon started by Justin Roiland like Rick and Morty with lots in common.
Including Roiland being kicked out after a couple of seasons for his crimes, and being replaced. This time not with an impersonator but just a new more british actor. Stayed pretty much in vibe with his style though.
Four aliens stuck on earth, plus the adventures of the tiny people that one of the aliens shrunk to keep in his wall like an ant farm. And the Silver Cops.
Pretty good fun. Watched the five seasons on Netflix in a couple of weeks. Apparently there's another if I search or wait.
Interesting how the machine can just keep churning it out even when the lead folks disappear. That's the ideal I suppose. Create the show then let it run on without you.

A potential actually-useful use-case for chatbots: Back in The Good Old Days when programmers did not fear being swamped by bug reports, especially the not-so-great reports, software would carry a global-scoped 'gripe' button, when clicked, a redacted snapshot of the machine state was bundled with whatever they wished to put into the text box, and no reply was expected beyond 'received'. Given the ease of recognizing pure noise in the input, an LLM might coallate a bunch and produce a useful report? False positives happen in support all the time 😅
That kinda puts the #LLM in the 'triangle' position on a #StaffordBeer #VSM diagram, what which measures expected vs actual like a steam-engine governor, reducing Variety to useful patterns and all. 🤔

Content warning: Advent of Code 2025 Day 10

Yes! Today's puzzle in #AdventOfCode was quite hard (especially part 2) but so rewarding and I learned a lot!
For part 1, I implemented A* from scratch, my favorite little pathfinding algo that I use pretty much every year for #AoC (sometimes I use a lib instead of implementing it but it's been a while so a refresher was in order).
For part 2, after trying A* again and noticing it was running for way too long, I went back to the drawing board and solved the first machine by hand. I noticed the constraints were a system of linear equations.
I then researched algorithms to solve such integer programming problems and didn't feel like learning AND implementing the algorithms in one day (ain't nobody got time fo that). But this lead me to discover the `good_lp` #rust crate which is really good and that I will keep in my back pocket from now on!
So I used the library to define a system of variables and constraints which could be solved magically for me.

Once these lettuces and stuff run their course, I want to try something a little bigger... like maybe starting a little fruit tree.
