It was a book of classic, simple design, like a flattened salmon, 800 pages long, very clean, very sleek. There was just one remarkable thing about it.
"It's so… black!" said Ford Prefect. "You can hardly make out its shape... light just seems to fall into it!"
The blackness of its title was so extreme that it was almost impossible to tell how close you were standing to it.
"Your eyes just slide off it…" said Ford in wonder.

In black varnished type at the top right of the front cover, only visible because of the angle the light is reflecting off it, is the text "Marcin Wichary / Shift Happens / Volume One". Similarly, on the orange spine are barely-visible glyphs that reflect the light.
A thick book with an orange spine and a black-and-white picture of a man typing on a keyboard with a screen displaying a graph to his left. The volume is at a slightly different angle from the previous image, showing how much the light angle affects the varnish. People who experience the world in unusual ways are often seen as #weird, and there's a long (and often uneasy) history of people associating that with supernatural beings, and spellcasting.
I think everyone probably needs a bit of magic in their lives - some wonder, things to remind them of the awesomeness and mysteries of existence. Some people seem content with very little of it, while others can't help but overflow with that stuff.
I try not to begrudge people beliefs that help them make it through the day, but a lot of those beliefs scare me...
