Friday was an adventure in tech futility. Started with a gifted laptop, Dell Latitude, and the simple task of wiping its poor excuse for an OS and installing something sensible.
#Ubuntu wasn't it. OMG Ubuntu, what HAVE you done?! Tried first #UbuntuStudio then stock Ubuntu, 24.04, 25.04, 25.11, all the installers simply hung, no log, no journalctl, CPU chugging but nada detectable action, even hours later, just "Preparing…"
Net advice is old, of course, but points to the snap bootstrap service, fix has no effect but Kee-riced look at the mount table?! Snaps crackle and pop all over! Wtf, why? 🤯
And it is tedious. These 'DVD' iso files are 7GB, so, after 6 hours frustration, I thought, let's try something smaller to cut the turnaround time. #Debian13 simple bare-bones net-install seemed a good candidate …
And it was. Seemless install. 😊

Barring any last minute hesitations by Linus Torvalds,
Linux 6.18 stable is expected for release in a little more than 24 hours from now...
Linux 6.18 is also anticipated to become this year's Long Term Support (LTS) kernel version
in being the last major kernel release of 2025.

I think it's time to crack out the daylight lamp. I'm not feeling low - stressed to the eyeballs but not flat - but I do feel like I haven't woken up yet and I've been at work for two hours 😄 My daylight lamp was about £25 and it's been money very well spent. I use it as the light on in the room when I'm getting ready in the morning, rather than sitting staring at it for 20 minutes, and it just works.

It is, however, a factual statement that CLIs are not discoverable user interfaces and they are a poor choice for mainstream audiences; this debate was settled long ago.

Good Morning #Canada
I'm relaxing in front of a fireplace with some freshly brewed coffee and watching the Weather Network map animation loop endlessly showing the forecasted snow that will hit us in the next 24 hours. It's hypnotic and distracts you from thinking about the 25-30cm expected accumulation. If you love snow, Canada is the place to be. In fact, almost two-thirds (65%) of Canada's land mass has annual snow cover for more than six months of the year. I read that on the internet, so it's true. I'll be one of the 24% of Canadians who own a #SnowBlower throwing the white stuff everywhere, including back into my face. About half of Canadian households on the east coast own a Snow Blower versus 7% in British Columbia. Apparently, 51% of residents in Barrie use snow clearing machines, which is a statistic I should have paid attention to when we decided to move into this area.

I’ve worked over the past year to reduce the amount of noise in my consciousness on a daily basis.
By that I mean - information noise, not literal sounds “noise”. (That problem was solved long ago by some good earplugs and noise canceling earphones.)
I’ve gotten used to spending less time on social media, regularly blocking most apps on my devices (anything with a feed news, most work communication apps, etc.), putting my phone and other devices aside for extended periods of time. Often go to work places with my iPad explicitly having its WiFi turned off and selecting cafes that don’t offer WiFi at all.
Negotiated better boundaries at work and in personal life where I exchange messages with people less often but try to make those interactions more meaningful, and people rarely expect me to respond to requests in less than 24 hours. Spent a lot of time setting up custom notification settings on all apps that would allow it, so I get fewer pings. With software, choosing fewer cloud-based options and using tools that are simple and require as few interruptions as possible.
Accustomed myself to lower-tech versions of doing things I like to do: reading on paper, writing by hand, drawing in physical sketchbooks, got a typewriter for typing without a screen. Choosing to call people on audio more, trying to make more of an effort to see people in person. Going to museums to look at art instead of browsing Pinterest. Defaulting to the library when looking for information.
I’m commenting on this now for two reasons:
1. I am pretty proud of myself for how much I’ve actually managed to reduce the constant stream of modern life esp. as a remote worker in tech!
2. Now that I’ve reached a breaking point of reducing enough noise that it’s NOTICEABLE - I am struck by the silence. I don’t know what to do with it. I don’t know how to navigate it and fill it. I made this space to be able to read and write and think more deeply - for now I feel stuck in limbo where I’m just reacquainting myself with the concept of having any space in my mind at all.

#Blakes7 Series A, Episode 01 - The Way Back
JENNA: About twenty-four hours. If you're expecting a last-minute reprieve you'd better forget it. Once they get you this far there's no going back. You'd better get used to the idea. Nobody out there gives a damn about you.
[Scene: VARON's apartment. He walks towards the bed where MAJA is sleeping and stops. She awak…

Claude Sonnet 4.0 describes the image as: "I can see this appears to be from a science fiction television series, showing two people in what looks like a dramatic scene. One person has curly blonde hair and is wearing what appears to be a sparkly or sequined dark outfit, while the other has dark curly hair and is wearing what looks like a green or olive-colored garment. The setting appears to be indoors with muted lighting, suggesting this might be taking place on a spacecraft or futuristic int…

I am from a big family and when we were young we always had family over on Christmas Day. This being the 1970s & 1980s, it meant my mum spent hours and hours and hours in the kitchen both on Christmas morning and most of Christmas Eve too.
So the one thing she wasn't going to do was cook an evening meal on Christmas Eve, instead we always used to get a chinese takeaway on December 24th. My dad used to save up several months worth of the Luncheon Vouchers he got from work and he'd get us a big blow-out feast from the local chinese takeaway.
I'll be spending only a sensible amount of time in the kitchen tomorrow but traditions are traditions, so I'm off down the chinese takeaway shortly. No Luncheon Vouchers, though!

Good morning from Harlem
#Photography #GoodMorning #Sunrise #NYC

Looking through an arched window two and a half hours after sunrise the deep blue sky has a single, small, puffy white cloud floating in the center. A few other puffy white clouds linger in the distance above the horizon. Pointed roofs of Harlem brownstones are silhouetted across the street, and a taller apartment building can be seen in the distance. The brown tops of two trees are on the bottom and right. The window is grimy.

The last 25 years of photographing buildings and landscapes has taught me that being in the right place at the right time helps define the quality of a photograph.
My camper van gets me into places at times that I wouldn’t normally be able to access.
I can now stay over on sites to monitor the local conditions and light levels throughout a full 24 hours.
I’m cut free of the bonds of ‘out of town’ accommodation and site access logistics.
Travelling in the van has been…
