Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories: ‘Israel commits crimes like it breathes. It must be stopped’ | #ELPAÍS English

Q. Can we talk about genocide without a ruling from an international court?

A. Was the Armenian genocide not a genocide because no court declared it to be so? No court established the Guatemalan genocide or that of Sabra and Chatila [Lebanon]. The genocide in Bosnia-Herzegovina was recognized this way only with respect to Srebrenica. Would we then say it wasn’t a genocide? And what about the Native Americans, the Inuit, the Aborigines in Australia, or the Nama and Herero in Namibia? Are they n…
Q. Will Israel succeed in expelling the population of Gaza?

A. The goal of this genocide is the ethnic cleansing of Palestine, as other genocides aimed for the ethnic cleansing of the native population of Australia, and in many places in North and Latin America. Palestine is the last frontier of Western colonialism. That is why it is our responsibility; that is why I say that the progressive government of Spain, a country that, like others, caused so much harm during centuries of colonialism, …

I find this map especially amusing in that in 1893, 238 colonists departed Australia (purportedly nonexistent) to found the New Australia colony in Paraguay (ditto).
Of course, Australia didn’t federate till 1901, so it could be argued that Australia didn’t *actually* exist at the time. And given Paraguay’s tremendous (but still hotly contested) losses in the 1864-70 Paraguayan War, the latter country was itself hanging on by a thread.

I'm finding it a bit odd that I'm so late to learn about this ... is it less emphasised in Australia? Why is it emphasised in the US?
At my current stage of learning, Australia's self-definition feels heavily 'state', with any discussion of 'nation' often being tied to racism.

In the final talk of the morning sessions of the #SolarEclipse Conference Thoby Dittrich talked about the Modern Eddington Experiment (the website moderneddingtonexperiment.org is under heavy construction): the best observing result of gravitational deflection of starlight by the Sun in the optical during solar eclipses is still Brun's from 2017 - arxiv.org/abs/1802.00343 - while others have tried with a vengeance since. The goal remains to observe the significant deflection of star positions between 1 and 2 solar radii from the center of the Sun: this is known as the 'forbidden zone' because the corona can be very bright here and only bright stars can be measured reliably - but those in turn are rare. It turns out that the star fields around the totally eclipsed Sun in 2027 and 2028 will be unusually rich in good candidates so there is (or should be) considerable interest in the physics didactics community to make use of these eclipses in southern Spain / northern Africa and Australia, respectively. 4/n

Just quietly, I spent a lot of November- April mentally preparing myself for a Trump-alike in Australia.
That resoundingly didn't happen, I am so thankful!! Whatever faults Albanese has, he is not Dutton and doesn't have Dutton's track record of racism/anti-immigration.
But I am noticing myself being cautious and self-censoring when responding to posts about the US. Even when I'm simply liking pro-democracy, pro-rule-of-law content! I guess I'm not ready to let my guard down yet

I think I need to figure out how to make these.
I don’t have great #luck with VTTs, but my rolls with RL math rocks are TERRIBLE. I had one Irish GM offer to mail #dice to me in Australia, and a Mexican GM advised—straight-faced, no less—I seek out a santero.

Went to order some 3d printing filament today and it was about 15% cheaper than normal - apparently it mostly comes from China so excess supplies due to Trump tariffs - a win for Australia 👍 #3dprinting

Was just reading about Matilda Emmerich having her artwork declined by the Hawkesbury Agricultural Show because of its content. Am I the only one concerned about the censorship of artists in Australia these days?
