The cat litter experiment was successful. I covered the shoes in it for the night*, took them out the next day and the stench was gone. I wasn't able to get it out by washing and scrubbing multiple times.
* For the record, I've used a fresh bag of cat litter.
Cat litter has a few advantages over, say, baking soda: it's easily available in large quantities, it's easy to pour out afterwards, and you can put it in the litter box afterwards.

HOW I laughed when I saw cat soup in the supermarket. What kind of idiot buys their cat soup, I thought? Me. I do. Turns out I'm that idiot because it gets them to drink in this heat.
