Having just watched #Jaws for the first time in ages, I was stunned by the famous opening sequence ... but not by its cinematography or acting or editing - but by the never-ending chain of in-your-face #continuity errors in lighting once the girl enters the water: one moment we have a low Sun and a red sky, then we have the Sun near the zenith (with a day for night effect) then low again and so on, for several cycles.
Now #Spielberg, is there supposed to be some hidden message here? Well, there isn't.
(Once it's day, fortunately, this problem is gone, and a great movie unfolds, still fresh after 50 years. And I know, you shouldn't mess with a masterpiece, but Lucas added characters to Star Wars IV, and Cameron corrected a wrong star pattern in Titanic, so may be Spielberg could just, for an anniversary special edition ... o.k., I shut up. ;-)

I have been intermittently sick, and working on a grant proposal and doing household stuff with the family all week. It's not the best recipe for a relaxing week on holiday. So now I'm going to do some fun stuff. Saturday morning science - which means looking at pretty data and reading new papers and editing student's paper.
... And wondering where I went so wrong that I have to do the actual science in my free time rather than at the office

Playing around with progressive JPEGs and their behavior in a web page. You can use ImageMagick to determine if a JPEG is interlaced. Most photo editing apps will export images as interlaced now, but you can see the behavior below.
Non-interlaced: Chunky render
Interlaced: Loads in from low quality to high quality.

An example of progressive JPEG showing the behavior difference in a browser.

Content warning: Audacity revamp, interesting video

I've used Audacity from time to time, so I was a little bit curious anyway, but this video from Tantacrul was really interesting on more fundamental topics too:
• change management
• technical debt
• usability
• discoverability
• defaults
and balancing the needs of newcomers against people who've got used to things working as they do now.
Respect!
(Audacity is audio editing software, simpler than e.g. Reaper or ProTools.)

Here's a great use of AI text-to-speech generation: preparing for a live pitch.
Instead of reading your pitch a hundred times so you can edit it for time, use ElevenLabs.
1. Create an account
2. Find a voice that matches your own cadence
3. Paste your script and have it generate the pitch
You'll immediately see how long the audio file is and can adjust your script for length.
Then you can spend your time **rehearsing** instead of editing.

-Pretentiousness (luckily quite rare). Dude, we get it, you're really smart. But most of us are more impressed by good ideas than pompous prose.
-Passive voice. How have you made it this far as a writer while attributing action to the universe instead of people? Buildings don't just get built. Books don't just get written.

The LLMs are useful for some tasks, I'm currently tidying up, proof reading and editing a document written by many international co-authors.
The LLM I'm using can very quickly correct grammar and spelling mistakes and produces much easier to understand text from occasionally tortured paragraphs. It still needs an experts eye (mine!) to check no mistakes have been introduced or complexities over-simplified.
This is actually the first time I've used an LLM for this task. It's making it much faster and less painful.
It also explains a lot about academic publishing lately..

Taking notes from the successes and failures of the Russian revolution, a group of anarchists (including Nestor Makhno, a Ukrainian anarchist militant who was critical in defeating the Tzar's army and who later also fought the Red Army) wrote a document titled the "Organizational Platform of the Libertarian Communists." This document came to be known as "The Platform." It remains one of the most important first-hand revolutionary documents, outlining a clear revolutionary plan.
I've taken this, the Viable System Model from cybernetics, and my own organizing experience, to describe an organization to confront the current set of crises.
This continues to build on the stuff I have been writing, but it's a lot less high level theory and a lot more specific.

As always, editing notes (typos, grammar, spelling, etc) are always welcome, as are any questions. My ADHD brain tends to go a lot faster than anything else, so I have a tendency to drop words and have a lot of trouble catching them later. Between my ADHD and mild dyslexia, it can be pretty hard for me to catch when autocorrect gives me the wrong word.
A lot of folks have already been super helpful in offering their editing support, and I'm really grateful. Writing this has felt collaborative, and it should. On the one hand this comes from my own experience and research, but on the other I'm also voicing things that have come from conversations here. This has all been a bit of my voice and a bit of the federated world, and I'm really appreciating that.
