A horse walks into a bar. The bartender asks, why the long face?
Horse says he's depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain.
Bartender says, solution is simple. I have a marvelous Amontillado in my cellar—

@axbom@axbom.meWe are watching The Sound of Music, for the 1000th time. It's always moving, but now the anschluss feels more relevant than it has ever been since 1938, when I was 2 years old. There is now a real danger of fascism taking over again. I'm too old to do much about it. Good luck to next generation.

Just finished "It's Lonely at the Center of the Earth" by Zoe Thorogood.
CW: Frank/graphic discussion of suicide and depression (not in this post but in the book).
It feels a bit wrong to simply give it my review here as I would another graphic memoir, because it's much more personal and less consensual than the usual. It feels less like Thorogood has invited us into her life than like she was forced to put her life on display in order to survive, and while I selfishly like to read into the book that she benefited in some way from the process, she's honest about how tenuous and sometimes false that claim can be. Knowing what I've learned from this book about Thorogood's life and demons, I don't want her to feel the mortification of being perceived by me, and so perhaps the best thing I could do is to simply unread the book and pull it back out of my memories.
I did not find Thorogood's life relatable, nor pitiable (although my instinct bends in that direction), but instead sacred and unknowable. I suspect that her writing and drawing has helped others in similar circumstances, but she leaves me with no illusion that this fact brings her any form of peace or joy. I wonder what she would feel reading "Lab Girl" or "The Deep Dark," but she has been honest enough to convey that such speculation on my part is a bit intrusive.
I guess the one other thing I have to say: Zoe Thorogood has through artistic perseverance developed an awe-inspiring mastery of the comic medium, from panel composition, through to page layout and writing. This book wields both Truth and Beauty.

Time to make another bass tab/sheet music, and this time it's for _Wood Carving Partita_ by Michiru Yamane from _Castlevania: Symphony of the Night_. This one is kind of a pain, but it feels really great when you nail a section after picking apart the left-hand from the piano and make it (1) playable on a four string, and (2) move the notes around so it works well with the music overall. The more I learn about Agentic AI, the more it feels like LLMs behave similar to a next-gen "SQL" where Agents define the "source tables" that can be searched for specific information. The metadata discloses the purpose and content of each agent, so that the LLM can join it when appropriate.

Somehow I've got that problem that just reading a book feels like I'm neglecting "important" work. My task list is long and there is always some "productive" stuff I could do. There's a word at the beginning and end of Dawn of Everything that feels self-referential right now: Kairos.
> We began this book with a quote which refers to the Greek notion of kairos as one of those occasional moments in a society’s history when its frames of reference undergo a shift – a metamorphosis of the fundamental principles and symbols, when the lines between myth and history, science and magic become blurred – and, therefore, real change is possible. Philosophers sometimes like to speak of ‘the Event’ – a political revolution, a scientific discovery, an artistic masterpiece – that is, a breakthrough which reveals aspects of reality that had previously been unimaginable but, once seen, can never be unseen. If so, kairos is the kind of time in which Events are prone to happen.
> Societies around the world appear to be cascading towards such a point. This is particularly true of those which, since the First World War, have been in the habit of calling themselves ‘Western’. On the one hand, fundamental breakthroughs in the physical sciences, or even artistic expression, no longer seem to occur with anything like the regularity people came to expect in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Yet at the same time, our scientific means of understanding the past, not just our species’ past but that of our planet, has been advancing with dizzying speed. Scientists in 2020 are not (as readers of mid-twentieth-century science fiction might have hoped) encountering alien civilizations in distant star systems; but they are encountering radically different forms of society under their own feet, some forgotten and newly rediscovered, others more familiar, but now understood in entirely new ways.
Reading this as I write something very inspired by this work feels especially serendipitous, especially at this time. When they wrote the book, I think that kairos felt more serendipitous itself. But as the frequency of opportunity increases, the veil between realities feels more malleable... that perhaps we can poke a finger through and open a portal to a completely different future than the one we've felt locked into for such a long time.

There are at least two instances of Space Battleship Yamato (anime and live-action) and they both feel kinda goofy: a ship-shaped spaceship. I thought that this was some Japanese thing -- paying homage to a heroic part of their history. I recently saw a documentary about the real battleship Yamato and oh boy... what a mess. Are there any Japanese amongst my followers who can tell me if these sci-fi versions are about paying homage? Because to me it feels a bit like historic revisionism.
