Calibratable Disambiguation Loss for Multi-Instance Partial-Label Learning
Wei Tang, Yin-Fang Yang, Weijia Zhang, Min-Ling Zhang
arxiv.org/abs/2512.17788 arxiv.org/pdf/2512.17788 arxiv.org/html/2512.17788
arXiv:2512.17788v1 Announce Type: new
Abstract: Multi-instance partial-label learning (MIPL) is a weakly supervised framework that extends the principles of multi-instance learning (MIL) and partial-label learning (PLL) to address the challenges of inexact supervision in both instance and label spaces. However, existing MIPL approaches often suffer from poor calibration, undermining classifier reliability. In this work, we propose a plug-and-play calibratable disambiguation loss (CDL) that simultaneously improves classification accuracy and calibration performance. The loss has two instantiations: the first one calibrates predictions based on probabilities from the candidate label set, while the second one integrates probabilities from both candidate and non-candidate label sets. The proposed CDL can be seamlessly incorporated into existing MIPL and PLL frameworks. We provide a theoretical analysis that establishes the lower bound and regularization properties of CDL, demonstrating its superiority over conventional disambiguation losses. Experimental results on benchmark and real-world datasets confirm that our CDL significantly enhances both classification and calibration performance.

I'm listening to the audiobook of *Vaccines: Are They Worth a Shot* by Andrea Grignolio. The book is ... fine, but the translation from Italian was either by a non-fluent speaker or a bad AI. The wrong word or phrase is often used, and it's jarring. For instance, the narrator says "exasperate" for "exacerbate," and "... attributed this cause to the deaths ..." when English would say, "... attributed the deaths to this cause ..."

One important thing I need to keep in mind with LibreWolf is that when something does not work I need to check if it works in Firefox.
For instance the TrueNAS shell was not working, and I realized that TrueNAS wasn't broken, LibreWolf was just "protecting" me...
Which again, is a good thing, but it's sometime a bit too much protection for those of us who know what we are doing.

This was "a nightmare scenario," said a firefighter with the Joshua Tree National Park, who also spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation.
During the last government shutdown six years ago, the revelation that vandals appeared to have chopped down a few of the Dr. Seuss-esque trees grabbed national headlines.
In this instance, the firefighter estimates more than a thousand trees were torched.

Suppose, for instance, that Denmark constricts the shipments of diabetes and popular weight loss drugs to the US?
Or, given that most US airlines have a lot of Airbus aircraft, suppose that France blocks the export of Airbus replacement parts to the US (just as the US blocks the shipment of Boeing replacement parts to Iran.) That would quickly shut down much of the US air-trave…

A lot of journalistic pieces contain too little information. But here's one that is chock full of interesting stuff, not details, but hooks for deeper inquiry. That stuff goes far beyond the topics in the headline. For instance I had never previously considered subway cars as a potential form of spyware.

Content warning: #Nerdy

Had some weird issues with my instance just now. Random stuff stopped working. Turns out my instance had only ipv6 connectivity, not ipv4. Reading worked mostly, but random stuff would fail, did not trigger my intuition as to where the error lay.
In hindsight, it was probably any direct fetch form instances with only ipv4 connectivity that failed. Posts that got sent on from or via elsewhere showed up, so it was not immediately obvious.

I’m reading Civilization Before Greece and Rome, by H. W. F. Saggs. Published in ‘89 so some interpretations are outdated, but a section on the emergence and rise of the god king in Mesopotamia for instance shows how the evangelical butt kissing of 🍊💩 and their efforts to sanctify him have been a part of human behavior for the past 5KY that we have written records of, and likely for a long while before that. Our constitution tries to buck the trend, but the odds for success look slim.

Hey everyone,
Gaza Verified is now open again for verification calls in 2026.
The new process for signing up for verification calls uses sign in with Mastodon and should remove the last remaining technical hurdle that was giving some of our friends in Gaza a hard time (adding the verification link to your Mastodon account is not intuitive in the current Mastodon interface). With this new flow, you won’t have to, we do it for you.

Screencast showing the new oAuth-based sign up flow where you enter your mastodon instance and press as button and your video verification call is scheduled within seconds.

Huh, think I might've figured out why one (but only one) of my NextCloud instances loses contact with the OnlyOffice instance on the same host... Figured out it *might* be because of frequent polling that's resulted in the Mailcow instance (also on the host, as I'm trying to economise) is seeing it as making too many connections and is temporarily fail2banning it nightly. I've added the host's IP(v4&6) to the Fail2Ban whitelist... 🤞 it's still connected tomorrow!<…

What we're seeing with #theforkiverse has worked before and can work again. Community leaders have proven they can build communities in places like discord and it would be super cool if there were clear reasons for them to choose fediverse platforms.
Not sure if there are clear ways to promote it. Perhaps more focus on instance customization (tbh plugins would help).

Now that the US has created a de facto war with Venezuela I am wondering whether Venezuela or its proxies will engage the US on a military basis. Not that they will "win", but they can do a lot of damage.
For instance, is Air Force One immune to attacks that Venezuela might launch? I doubt that it is.
And are US gov't officials and resources, anywhere in the world, now legitimate war targets? I think they might be.
And I wonder whether this might mean that …
