"For instance, the technology’s fast charging, high output and robust endurance suggest a good fit for storing excess electricity generated at solar farms during the daytime, to power the grid at night. It may also be useful for backup power at data centers.
“Because this technology could extend the lifetime of batteries to decades upon decades, it might be ideal for storing renewable energy or quickly taking over when power is lost,” El-Kady said. “This would remove worries about the changing cost of infrastructure.”

For instance, the D's don't break down the costs of el cheato's wars, tariffs, and gifts to the wealthy in terms that normal people can understand.
For instance: The war in Iran is costing every person - every man, woman, and child - about $3 every day - $90 a month - $1000/year. So a family of four is paying about $4000 for the R-party's war in Iran.
Then there's the tariffs - cost to the typical…

More specifically, it appears this bot farm has now come for my Mastodon instance, because the number of requests has doubled in the last 24 hours, with a lot of the requests being API requests for a single JSON file.

Calibratable Disambiguation Loss for Multi-Instance Partial-Label Learning
Wei Tang, Yin-Fang Yang, Weijia Zhang, Min-Ling Zhang
arxiv.org/abs/2512.17788 arxiv.org/pdf/2512.17788 arxiv.org/html/2512.17788
arXiv:2512.17788v1 Announce Type: new
Abstract: Multi-instance partial-label learning (MIPL) is a weakly supervised framework that extends the principles of multi-instance learning (MIL) and partial-label learning (PLL) to address the challenges of inexact supervision in both instance and label spaces. However, existing MIPL approaches often suffer from poor calibration, undermining classifier reliability. In this work, we propose a plug-and-play calibratable disambiguation loss (CDL) that simultaneously improves classification accuracy and calibration performance. The loss has two instantiations: the first one calibrates predictions based on probabilities from the candidate label set, while the second one integrates probabilities from both candidate and non-candidate label sets. The proposed CDL can be seamlessly incorporated into existing MIPL and PLL frameworks. We provide a theoretical analysis that establishes the lower bound and regularization properties of CDL, demonstrating its superiority over conventional disambiguation losses. Experimental results on benchmark and real-world datasets confirm that our CDL significantly enhances both classification and calibration performance.

There is support for these laws because people think the only consequence of a ban on a thing is that the thing stops existing.
For instance: Heroin is dangerous and addictive? Ban it then.
And suddenly you have organized crime and a grey market and criminal gangs shooting each other in the streets while addicts can’t seek help and have to resort to crime to fund their addiction. Their lives more chaotic and criminal than ever. Our streets are littered in needles.
Well done everyone.
Now we think algorithmic social media may be mind bending?
Shall we ban it? For kids? Even if we can’t define it?
If you break kids access to the internet you sacrifice all the good that the majority of kids are getting from it for an ineffective solution which won’t fix anything and will mean massive increases in government surveillance and censorship. To data-hordes being hacked and people suffering ID theft.
And it won’t help.
Misogyny and sexism and depression are older than the internet.
Plus of course kids remain better at accessing computers than their parents. You’re going to end up breaking the internet for adults who can’t figure out how to verify while the kids start to use VPNs and stolen IDs to browse 4chan.

@… check out this simple Datasette app a friend of mine made with exe.xyz. His entire input was: "There is publicly available data on service requests for Arlington VA available at: data.arlingtonva.us/dataset/10
Can you make me a datasette instance to explore this data?"
Not that different from other vibe coding except that exe.xyz seems remarkably easy to use.

One important thing I need to keep in mind with LibreWolf is that when something does not work I need to check if it works in Firefox.
For instance the TrueNAS shell was not working, and I realized that TrueNAS wasn't broken, LibreWolf was just "protecting" me...
Which again, is a good thing, but it's sometime a bit too much protection for those of us who know what we are doing.

What we're seeing with #theforkiverse has worked before and can work again. Community leaders have proven they can build communities in places like discord and it would be super cool if there were clear reasons for them to choose fediverse platforms.
Not sure if there are clear ways to promote it. Perhaps more focus on instance customization (tbh plugins would help).

Hey everyone,
Gaza Verified is now open again for verification calls in 2026.
The new process for signing up for verification calls uses sign in with Mastodon and should remove the last remaining technical hurdle that was giving some of our friends in Gaza a hard time (adding the verification link to your Mastodon account is not intuitive in the current Mastodon interface). With this new flow, you won’t have to, we do it for you.

Screencast showing the new oAuth-based sign up flow where you enter your mastodon instance and press as button and your video verification call is scheduled within seconds.

The key to ⚠️holding Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents accountable for constitutional violations -- may lie in a 1987 law review article by a young law professor named Akhil Reed Amar.
“I think it was a good idea then,” he said last week,
“and it’s only taken more than half a lifetime for people to actually read the thing.”
The article has, in truth, been quite influential. It has been cited, for instance, in seven Supreme Court opinions.

Someone asked me, “Have you read the latest Dan Brown?” There’s actually a mention of MISP in The Secret of Secrets. And yes, it fits surprisingly well within the story. Alex Conan (who assists Jonas Faukman in the investigation) mentions that he detected the activity using FTK, and that the indicators were later reused by the threat actor (having a hit on a MISP instance).

“But before I could build the algorithm, my FTK scan returned a hit. One of

“So who hacked us?” Faukman demanded, leaning forward.

“That's why I wanted to talk to Katherine—to find out if she could think of
anyone who might be targeting her so I could build a proprietary algorithm and
search for specific digital artifacts.”

My God, this kid needs an editor: Just tell me who the hell did it?!

Reading algorithmic feeds is a crazy thing to do: abandoning control over your own influences to a robot programmed by advertisers to manipulate you?
Madness.
I will not allow a robot programmed by advertisers and surveillance capitalists to determine what I read.
I don’t read any robo-feeds and don’t recommend anyone else does.
But people do:
Top five highest reaching smart phone apps:
All designed to harvest data from your phone, three of them owned by one creepy billionaire, and most people use them by looking at a robo-feed suggesting to them what to read and watch or filter.
I don’t use any of them.
I watch some Youtube, but not though their app. Uninstalled that from my phone as soon as I got it. It’s an awful downgrade of just playing in a browser page. I subscribe to some channels there in my RSS reader like a boss. Never watch what their recommendation algorithms suggests.
I tell them what I want to watch, I don’t let them tell ME what to watch, and frankly I wish all those videographers would start a peertube instance or something instead of posting their work on a corporate surveillance site.
I say you should avoid that algorithm stuff, it’s crazy manipulative.
But people should be free to do what they want.
I’m free to block Facebook! And I do: and I encourage everyone else to do so too.
Edit your DNS, block their domain names. Do it.
But if governments or corporations have the power to mandate those choices for everyone, it will go badly.
Prohibitions always do.

For some reason trump thinks that Europe has no means to retaliate against US pressure over Greenland.
Suppose, for instance, that Denmark constricts the shipments of diabetes and popular weight loss drugs to the US?
Or, given that most US airlines have a lot of Airbus aircraft, suppose that France blocks the export of Airbus replacement parts to the US (just as the US blocks the shipment of Boeing replacement parts to Iran.) That would quickly shut down much of the US air-trave…

By post, it's mostly web rather than Phanpy.
Suspect it's mostly replies over stand-alone only because of threads here really. Most of a thread counts as a reply because it's a reply-to-self.
I mostly use the web interface for new posts rather than the phanpy one because I can't type an emoji in Phanpy. Only instance custom-emojis can be typed starting with a colon and I usually want 😄 or 😉 or 🙄 not the custom emojii. Can't type them on Phanpy. So I mostly compose on web.
Maybe the Phanpy dev has some kind of emoji plugin or something? Dunno why he makes it only do the custom ones.
But this is why I mostly post from web even though I almost entirely read from Phanphy. Which means replies mostly come from Phanpy but standalone mostly from Web.
