Open vs. Closed: The Fight for a New Internet
The Story Behind — A federated internet is forming. It's built on open protocols like ActivityPub & connects services like Mastodon, Threads, Pixelfed, Tumblr, Wordpress and more into a connected network known as the fediverse. Any social internet worth thinking about needs to be built on the idea of care.
- care for the wellbeing of the people on the network (moderation)
- care for those doing extra work (like moderation)
- care for each other (add alt-texts to images, thinking about inclusivity etc)
- care to make running infrastructure sustainable (in all respects)
The social Internet needs to be a web of human care.

Schneier is a data security expert with a master's degree in computer

Playing loose with the facts is a serious problem with Schneier. For
example in discussing a small-exponent attack on RSA, he says "an

when e has less than one quarter as many bits as n, which is a quite

I don't actually think there's an obligation (in the UK) for ISPs or AI companies to block content from sanctioned entities.
ISPs have an obligation to block "an internet service provided by a designated person" and a "person who provides a social media service" must take "reasonable steps to prevent content...". But AI services aren't ordinarily social media services.

Works for other uses too: if you're on a metered internet connection. Or for folks living in rural communities with no connectivity at all. Being able to distribute the APK _and_ the map files locally can be really great!
