Our hotel wifi keeps glitching. I'm guessing that there's a captive portal or something that is disabled, but the device randomly wants to send people to that network. Sometimes you'll have a 10.0.x.x IP address and everything will be fine, but other times you connect and you'll get a 192.168.1.x IP address and can't even reach the gateway (192.168.1.250). So on two different laptops, I've had to disable dhcp and hardcode 10.0.x.x IP addresses in order to get working …

Useful.
I’ve always disliked the fact that SOHO NAT routers all seem to be configured with one of a handful of 192.168.*/24 subnets. Beyond the risk of collision, I’ve had the experience of being told vehemently by benighted customer “IT guys” that I’ve done something horribly wrong by setting their inside up on 10.175.202.0/23 or some similarly uncommon RFC1918 block, because they “knew” that it was supposed to be in the Class C range of RFC 1918.

Initial proof of life out of the flash: using normal x1 operation, it appears to be fully functional when driven by the MCU over APB.
So far, I haven't tested actually reading/writing data, but it's doing everything I would expect from a fully functional, correctly soldered flash. Not sure why Vivado doesn't like it.
It's definitely hooked up to the right pins since I'm using the STARTUPE3 hard IP to interface with it.

And, no, they don't offer "Bring Your Own IP" for IPv6 either, only for IPv4.
So when I recently migrated us to a new server I had to do the DNS TTL dance with the IPv6 side of things.

OK, Switzerland does NOT get to claim inventing the Internet. Fuck that noise. AN implementation of a hypertext system was invented by a BRITISH guy working at CERN in 1989, which got picked up as the WEB. The ARPA/Internet is an American creation from 1969. IP in 1983. fuck's sake guys

I know its a bad picture, but I got a funny sticker at a conference today and had to share.

A sticker that on top reads "Caution" in yellow. Under that is a picture of an antiquated horse and buggy, and the writing "Legacy IP Only - This product does not support the current generation of the Internet Protocol, IPv6"

The more time goes on, the more conflicted I get about #AI. (or, more specifically, generative AI. I like causal AI a fair bit)
On one hand, I hate so much about it:
the needless environmental and electronic parts waste, the impact on labor, the monopolistic nature of main organizations driving it, the endless conversations about AGI and other absurdly utopian (or dystopian) futures, the widespread theft of IP and human work, the devaluation of labor and craft… so much of it is not okay at all.
On the other hand, I kinda get it?
I like to test software for myself, so I've been dipping my toes into some popular AI tools over the past couple of years. I have a paid subscription to ChatGPT (which I don’t feel great about, I know), and I have found genuine utility in it.
More so, I feel so conflicted when I talk to people I respect and who I think are very smart and creative and they tell me how in love they are with all of these AI tools, about the complex workflows they build, about their experiments with agentic AI and integrations... These people seem so excited, so alive, so joyous about the things that this technology allows them to do. They often wouldn't have had the skills / knowledge / financial capital to do some of those things with human efforts alone. And now I see them coding their own tools, doing complex data analysis, trying creative experiments with graphics / text / video...
And I feel like a total jerk going "BUT ACTUALLY THIS IS UNETHICAL AND INEFFICIENT AND YOU SHOULD STOP IT BECAUSE AI SUCKS".
The technology behind all these gen AI models does have real utility, and it has kicked off a lot of creativity from people who wouldn't have dabbled in those kinds of projects otherwise.
So I don't know how to feel. Because I can't let go of the guilt and the real problems and the awareness of how much empty hype there is.

#DevOps people, Is there any well known good approach to combine #Terraform / #OpenTofu with #Ansible ?
I suppose most #cloud environments have relatively good & complete providers and perhaps that makes it easy to have single sources of truth and all that jazz... but I'm using #Hetzner's cloud and there are some things that can't be exported through datasources outputs (for example private IP addresses).
I had to script my way around, adding Moonrepo and Deno on top of that... but my setup is extremely custom and probably not taking advantage of some common practices in the field.
