New pre-print! #ai
**Universal pre-training by iterated random computation.**
⌨️🐒 A monkey behind a typewriter will produce the collected works of Shakespeare eventually.
💻🐒 But what if we put a monkey behind a computer?
⌨️🐒 needs to be lucky enough to type all characters of all of Shakespeare correctly. 💻🐒 only needs to be lucky enough to type a program for Shakespeare.

A table showing one string of random characters next to an emoji of a monkey next to a keyboard (representing a typewriter). Below it, three strings, also of random characters, but with more structure. Some characters and n-grams repeat. Next to these three strings is an emoji of a monkey next to a laptop computer. The caption reads: (⌨️🐒) A string of randomly sampled characters. (💻🐒) The result of passing this string through three randomly initialized neural network models. The latter data is …

My JS Krups is resisting netbooting. I see it doing a DHCP discover, and I see Kea responding with an offer, but then it just sends another Discover. Hmph. So I took the flash SIM out and now it boots to Net rather than flash by default; alas with the same DHCP behaviour. Time to try isc-dhcp.…

It’s not the mistakes that matter. Apple has made them before. The Newton, MobileMe, the butterfly keyboard. What matters is the posture. A company once defined by joyful provocation—by thinking different—is now defined by its defensiveness. Its leadership acts not like inventors but like stewards of a status quo. They protect margins like relics. They fear dilution. They optimize at the expense of surprise.

It's June, so I've got my Javastation off the shelf for the first time in a couple of decades. This is a Javastation Krups, with 100MHz sparc, sold as a diskless workstation. I never realised it had a PPP ROM boot in! Anyway, I should get on and set up networking and a boot server.
(Note: the plastic on the clips on the doors is fragile, 2 just pinged off on me)

A screenshot, showing a Java logo in the corner, 'JavaStation' in big at the top and an icon that looks like a SIMM, probably indicating ROM boot.
The side of a JavaStation Krups, it's shape is ...odd. Quite smooth, ovalish in cross section, on the side is a Java logo, and there's another on the top, It's mostly grey with two wings at the back in Purple and some cooling vents inbetween.

I've repaired my Laptop! Or lets say I've replaced my cracked trackpad... With one of another colour, as I am only able to check compatibility on technical level, not a stylish one ... Well anyways I'll just say it has its own character.

The focus of this picture is to show the insides of the opened laptop, especially one thing I noticed all over it: There are markers for places certain screws go in (they differ between screw kind), which helped reassembly a lot!
A picture of the UEFI system test for the trackpad. It passed with everything checked.

Hidden note: It also works great in my Fedora install.
A picture of the trackpad and keyboard of the reassembled laptop. It reveals I ordered a whiteish trackpad for a black laptop.
