Remember that authoritarian movements of all kinds, but especially fascist movements, do not initially have the power to force an entire nation state to bend to their will. They need — not just benefit from, but absolutely •need• — the passive acquiescence of large numbers of people.
Loud, annoying, visible resistance punctures the lie that it’s inevitable, that people who keep their heads down will be rewarded in the end.

It is cold in northern parts of the world. Studded tyres are awesome. If you do not have them, forgot to mount them or cannot afford to invest for your usage, I am here for you.
The number of times I have been caught out and unicycled on snow and ice is quite high. If I can do it, you can do it. Just take it easy! Oh and wear a helmet, even if you do not normally. That kind of a fall is exactly what they are for.

Cycling on regular/unstudded tyres

Riding on ice with normal tyres is entirely possible in much the same way that walking on ice is, so long as you are careful. The key is to avoid sudden movements, such as changes in direction and speed. With that in mind, here is a quick summary of some tips.

Cycle slower: This gives you more time to observe problems and means less harsh braking.
Keep it consistent: Try and keep your speed as consistent as possible. When you do need to stop, slow down very…

"The fundamental problem is this: that most of the means of communication are owned or influenced by the very rich. If democracy is the problem capital is always trying to solve, propaganda is part of the solution. Like the kings and empire-builders of the past, they use their platforms to project the claims that suit them and suppress the claims that don’t. This means boosting right and far-right movements, which defend wealth and power..." -- George Monbiot.

Adding another post. This one is a bit less polished, but I want to get it out. As things get harder for everyone, I'm seeing a greater tendency to want to grasp onto revolutionary fiction such as #Andor. I think there's value in that, but it has to come with an informed critique.
> We are so thirsty for hope that we will drink it up, even when that hope comes from a fiction and the truth behind the hope is poison. In Andor, we see the worst elements sacrifice themselves for some of the best. The revolution goes through a process of purification, the complicated elements weeding themselves out to make room for the simplified good, as the rebellion unifies. In reality, this tends to be the opposite how things actually work.
> [...]
> [The Urban Guerilla movement of the 60's through the 80's] centered militant revolution. In doing so, they omitted or cut themselves off from the logistic support needed to sustain such revolutionary activity. The trauma of carrying out violence further isolated and radicalized them. Lacking infrastructure for trauma healing, their decay escalated and became unrecoverable. Ultimately, their revolutionary movements both emulated and reinforced the status quo they were trying to resist.
> There emerges a strange historical parallel that is difficult to see from within the dominant paradigm. The competitive politics of electoralism derives from heroic competition, where people (typically men) compete (often violently) for control over a territory or people. Thus the insurrectionary enters into the very same competition as a challenger, not against the system of domination but for control over it. The success of the revolution, then, does not abolish the system of violent domination but changes rather replaces its management.
> Many modern anarchists will be quick to point out the disconnect between ends and means. While authoritarian projects often assert that "the ends justify the means," and Andor implies the same, anti-authoritarian projects assert the ends and the means are not only united but are, in fact, the same.
This is still very much something I'm actively editing, but I'd still love feedback to help me refine it to it's final form. Typo catches and clarifying questions welcome.

The Third Visual Pathway for Social Perception
David Pitcher
arxiv.org/abs/2512.09351 arxiv.org/pdf/2512.09351 arxiv.org/html/2512.09351
arXiv:2512.09351v1 Announce Type: new
Abstract: Influential models of primate visual cortex describe two functionally distinct pathways: a ventral pathway for object recognition and the dorsal pathway for spatial and action processing. However, recent human and non-human primate research suggests the existence of a third visual pathway projecting from early visual cortex through the motion-selective area V5/MT into the superior temporal sulcus (STS). Here we integrate anatomical, neuroimaging, and neuropsychological evidence demonstrating that this pathway specializes in processing dynamic social cues such as facial expressions, eye gaze, and body movements. This third pathway supports social perception by computing the actions and intentions of other people. These findings enhance our understanding of visual cortical organization and highlight the STS's critical role in social cognition, suggesting that visual processing encompasses a dedicated neural circuit for interpreting socially relevant motion and behavior.

Day 29: Leanne Betasamosake Simpson
I've been sitting on Simpson for a while because there's some overlap in her writing with Robin Wall Kimmerer, and I've had a lot of different genres/styles/subjects/media I've wanted to post at least one author from. But I've now hit repeats on at least YA romance and manga, and Simpson's writing is actually quite different from Kimmerer's in a lot of ways. While Kimmerer is a biologist by training and literally braids that knowledge together with her knowledge of Potawatomi cosmology and ethics, Simpson is an Anishinaabe philosopher and anarchist, and her position as a scholar of Indigenous philosophy adds a different depth to her work: she talks in more depth about knowledge relationships and her connections with specific elders, and she has more citations to other Indigenous theorists, which is the one criticism I've ever seen of Kimmerer's work. Rather than being Indigenous and a scientist, she's Indigenous and a scholar of indigenous studies.
I've only read "Theory of Water" by Simpson, but it was excellent, and especially inspiring to read as an anarchist. Simpson's explicit politics are another difference from Kimmerer's work, which is more implicitly than explicitly political. This allows Simpson to draw extremely interesting connections to other anarchist theorists and movements. "Theory of Water" is probably a bit less accessible than "Braiding Sweetgrass," but it's richer from a theory perspective as a result.
In any case, Simpson is a magnificent writer, sharing personal insights and stories along with (and inseparable from) her theoretical ideas.

Hey Fedi, as a marketer I want to say: ALL OF YOU HAVE THE POWER TO INFLUENCE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT.
We can shape social movements and public opinion with the things we say. Communication CAN change minds and make improvements that feel “impossible” real and tangible. That’s how the right got as far as it did, with strong and consistent messaging.
Now, let’s be practical. HOW we talk about the events that happen matters as much as WHAT we talk about.
If we want to make a difference and mobilize people towards progressive stances while our democracy and freedom are under attack - we need to use effective language and messaging.
Don’t give airtime to conservative values and MAGA lies. Instead, appeal to the values we believe in and help shape the conversation in ways that benefit people like us who want a better future.
I’ll share some resources in the thread with actionable advice.

This article is absolute insanity. The only way I can describe it is being from a Rabidly anti-Canadian American.
And in an overall tone of disrespect for the rule of law, autonomy, democracy, or progressive thought.
"In a strategy of the retrenchment, the dismemberment of Canada becomes a wise decision. Rather than allowing it to continue down a path of anti-American antagonism, the United States could support the Alberta and Quebec separatist movements. A successful secession by Alberta alone would cripple the federal fisc, and drive separatism in other regions due to the resultant decline in their equalization payments which comprises such a substantial part of their provincial budgets. In the end, British Columbia and a unified Maritime province would be admitted to the Union as Democratic states while Alberta and Saskatchewan would be admitted as Republican states; ensuring continued balance in the US Senate.
The rump of Canada, left with only one or two provinces, would finally be able to revise its constitution with ease. Under US pressure, the rump could become a freely associated state similar to Palau, with a new constitution reordering society along American lines. In time, perhaps it too could be annexed.”
