In Little Tokyo, a five-block neighborhood east of downtown Los Angeles that is among the country’s largest Japanese American enclaves,
news often gets delivered and shared at the century-old koban.
It’s a community security office similar to those in Japan,
housed in a former police substation and named after a local hero from World War II.
Brian Kito stood on the sidewalk outside the koban Wednesday,
surveying the street that’s become a hot spot of activity a…
In the wake of the official MN Capitol rally being cancelled, lots of neighborhood protests springing up in its place. Judging by local reaction, that MAGA serial killer is going to cause •more• protest, not less. This makes me feel better about the decision to cancel the big one (which, per the previous post, I am truly torn about).

There's an ice cream truck trawling my neighborhood, and the music it's broadcasting is... Christmas carols.
«So even though driverless cars nominally have nothing to do with law enforcement, police are treating them as though they are their own roving surveillance cameras.».
And by extension, protestors and other people start to view them as the state surveillance tools they are.

CVS was so worried about shoplifting that it stole its own soul
I’m no marketing whiz, but it seems to me that CVS,
like a lot of brick-and-mortar businesses these days,
is confused about which business it’s actually in.
CVS might think it’s still in the business of helping you restock your toothpaste and bodywash, like a giant vending machine,
but plenty of online sites are doing that more cheaply and just as reliably.

After 15 full days in the new house, I think it's time to close off this year-long thread. Some closure on past commentary:
- for the 1st in our lives, we are debt free. Took us nearly 70 years, but we know how incredibly fortunate we are.
- we've dumped our net proceeds from #Downsizing into investments to make sure we aren't tempted to spend it foolishly.
- we kept some funds to fix some issues, including furnace & A/C, water filtration, electrical, eavestroughs, etc.
- my daughter and I are once again fighting galactic aliens online so you can rest easy.
- we've only been to the beach twice, for very short visits, as things have been hectic. Hopefully, we can enjoy that part of our neighborhood as we get into August.
Here is a short video of our 1st walk through just a few minutes before the movers arrived.

This morning I had to get some work done so I did a short ride of just 3 miles around the neighborhood on the old 1970's Raleigh. I tried to notice what causes the squeaks and rubbing noises and did a little maintenance when I got home.
No huge hills on this ride, it's a 3-speed, but I did have an average 11mph for the 16 minute ride.

i saw this in a krugman post:
Recently the West Side Rag, my ultra-local news source, ran an article titled “The Upper West Side: A Neighborhood for Independent Minds.” Lots of interesting history, but frankly my first reaction was “Yeah, independent minds who can afford to pay $1600 a square foot for housing.”
meanwhile my next door neigbor just got halfway-to-new-york-ridiculous per sq ft. in ann arbor for pete's sake
At 7 I was walking the 5-ish blocks to/from the neighborhood grocery store occasionally & exploring the patch of woods halfway there. By 9 I was biking over a mile to school every day and often further to my Dad’s apartment. All in University City, an inner suburb of St. Louis. Some of it crossing or riding on major arterial roads & crossing a freeway.
I wasn’t special in any of that. My sisters & kids in my neighborhood did it too.
I enjoy bicycling through a neighborhood nicer than my own. MAGA vibe, though.

Stellar Ancestry Unlocked: Chemical and Orbital Clues Link Metal Poor Stars to Globular Clusters and the Galaxy's Thick Disk
This study presents a detailed chemical, kinematic, and orbital dynamic analysis of five metal poor stars in the solar neighborhood: HD 2665, HD 5916, HD 122956, HD 189349, and HD 218857. Using high-resolution spectroscopic data from the ELODIE and ESPaDOnS instruments, we derived elemental abundances for 29 species (25 elements: C, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, S, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, Ce, Nd, and Sm) via LTE based analysis with ATLAS9 model atmospheres. However, my posts were much more generalized and that was not called for.

StreetLens: Enabling Human-Centered AI Agents for Neighborhood Assessment from Street View Imagery
Traditionally, neighborhood studies have employed interviews, surveys, and manual image annotation guided by detailed protocols to identify environmental characteristics, including physical disorder, decay, street safety, and sociocultural symbols, and to examine their impact on developmental and health outcomes. While these methods yield rich insights, they are time-consuming and require intensive expert intervention. Recent technological advances, including vision-language models (VLMs), have…

Remember - if your kids go to school, a school that provides free busing to everyone who lives more than a KM away, that's in a quiet neighborhood perfect for walking and cycling, and that's in one of the largest cities on the continent (a city that has a generally functional transit system), you have NO CHOICE but to drive them to school every day.

Also, though…it is just deeply heartening to randomly encounter a protest: not a thing that I already knew about, but a thing that just •showed up• in my neighborhood. It makes me feel like the circle of resistance is much bigger than my own little circle. And it is.
That’s the feeling I want us to create: “Wow, these protests are everywhere.”
