If I understand that correctly, a container image is built from a base image by creating a container from the base image and then carrying out operations that build up successive layers in an overlay filesystem and then committing the result.
An overlay filesystem is at the core a sequence of directories that is traversed when looking for a file. The first directory that has the file wins, where deletions are just files with a special bit set.

Does somebody know this overlay thingy which annoys me since a couple of months and I don't know where to disable it.
It's not app-specific, it sometimes appears when I want to interact with something at the top of any app. It vanishes after touching somewhere else and is reduced to a white bar at the top.
I could not find out about its purpose or functionality. The middle part icons do nothing.

iOS 26 is horrible* because they changed the position of the Umlauts I need for being a German with an English keyboard layout! I swear that Ä Ö and Ü were much closer to the corresponding letter! 😡🫨All that muscle memory for waste.
