The ‘plug-and-play’ solar revolution
It’s a $400 kit from Bright Saver,
a non-profit advocating for
“plug-and-play” solar that works
for renters and homeowners alike.
Unlike traditional rooftop solar, which requires thousands of dollars in upfront costs, specialized mounting hardware and professional electricians,
this system is designed for the everyday consumer.
Setup is simple:
you hang the panel on a balcony or prop it up in a back yard and…

Utiliities are services that are essential for the functioning of todays society - things like water, electricity, sewage. And there are many successful publicly owned utilities providing those services.
Why don't we acknowledge that housing is essential for the functioning of our communities? And think about how treating housing as a utility might solve a problem that market forces have failed to address for far too long?

Texas is about to hit a major energy milestone. By 2026, the state's solar power generation will overtake coal for the first time, producing 78,000 GWh compared to coal's 60,000 GWh.
The Lone Star State is adding 14 GW of new utility-scale solar, plus massive battery storage to keep the grid stable. Combined with wind, renewables could exceed 20% of total U.S. generation by early 2027.

Our electric utility, Appalachian Power, has an advisory panel which I'm convinced is simply a mechanism to blunt fussy customers by making them feel heard without actually doing anything.
Essentially you get surveys with scope-limited questions and little opportunity to really speak to an issue.
As a front-line defense of the bureaucracy, it's brilliant. Whether it's needed in a government-sanctioned monopoly is unclear.

Partitioned Iterative Quantum Scheduling of Satellites for Urgent Disaster Response: Case study of Wildfire

Abstract: The standard in Earth-observation tasks today is having near real-time access to surface images in response to changing conditions. For instance, as urban environments interface more with wildlands and wildfires become less predictable, their tracking with satellite resources becomes essential. This requires the coordination of increasingly large constellations of satellites, giving rise to challenging computational problems. With wildfire detection and tracking as a backdrop, we investigate the power of special purpose and novel computing paradigms to tackle the ensuing satellite scheduling problems, making a compelling case for quantum algorithms. We bring quantum scheduling algorithms closer to implementation by examining both the emerging iterative quantum algorithm framework, which comes with analytic guarantees compared to some classical algorithms, and distributed quantum computing methods whose relevance is on the rise as utility-scale problems begin to get solved with quantum computers. Drawing strength from several computing fronts, we develop a distributed/parallelization scheme in conjunction with the quantum algorithm design and apply these techniques to real-world datasets for wildfire detection. While our quantum subprocesses are currently too small to see significant quantum advantage, our results validate the utility of these techniques, and continue forging the path toward distributed quantum computing.

Joint Movable Antenna Positioning and RIS Partitioning for Sum-Rate Maximization

arXiv:2606.11519v1 Announce Type: new
Abstract: This paper investigates the utility of the movable antenna (MA) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) framework for downlink wireless communications. In the considered scenario, a base station (BS) is equipped with two sub-arrays of MAs transmits signals to the users via the RIS. By jointly exploiting the antenna-positioning flexibility of MAs and the RIS element selection capability, the proposed joint MA-RIS framework introduces additional design degrees of freedom to enhance desired signals and mitigate inter-user interference, thereby maximizing the network sum-rate. To this end, we formulate a joint optimization problem involving MA positioning, sub-array beamforming, and RIS element selection, subject to the minimum antenna separation and transmit power constraints. The resulting problem is highly non-convex and challenging to solve directly. To address this issue, an alternating optimization framework is developed that decomposes the problem into three tractable subproblems. Specifically, zero-forcing beamforming is employed for transmit beamformer design, a low-complexity one-dimensional search is derived for RIS element selection, and the MA positioning problem is solved using block coordinate descent (BCD) and convex optimization techniques implemented via CVX. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed joint MA-RIS framework significantly improves the achievable sum-rate compared with conventional fixed MAs and benchmark schemes with random configurations.

So LLMs have utility for programming but not _by themselves_, only in conjunction with a harness that essentially brute-forces text generation until it passes deterministic criteria.
Those (non-LLM parts) can be tested in an automated way, by iteratively syntax checking, compiling, running tests etc.
But this doesn't apply to literally anything else: there's no deterministic syntax checking, compiling or veracity-testing for human language—yet tech bros still have this misguided notion that LLMs work great for _everything_ because they work (sometimes) for generating computer code.
(I'm not going into economic or ethical problems with LLM here on purpose; this is purely an observation from a technical and epistemological point of view.)

Abstract: We present a polynomial-time algorithm for computing a $1/e$-approximate Hylland--Zeckhauser (HZ) equilibrium. This establishes the \emph{first} efficient approximation guarantee for HZ equilibria in settings with multi-valued utilities. Our main technical contribution is a novel utility stratification technique that reduces the original multi-valued market to a structured bi-valued instance. This reduction allows us to efficiently compute the approximation by leveraging the exact algorithm of Vazirani and Yannakakis.

best secondary car-related purchase (trailer) i have ever made beside the next best car-related purchase i have made.
This trailer has been infinitely useful even if the car is not technically "rated" for it, a cross-Canada trip and endless runs to the transfer depot, stores, soil dispensary, and rock yard have made it a huge part of our home life. Even if the lights on it only work 75% of the time (seriously... how can they not make these things more robust?)
And the little electric pump is so great. Can plug in to both 120V home and 12V car outlet, has multiple ends for different types of tires and inflatable things. Great for home, car and camping. Set a PSI or kPa, hit the go button and it runs until the pressure is met.

Designed-Source Reductions and a Dual-Purpose Feasibility Band for Semantic Rate-Distortion

Abstract: The joint rate-distortion framework of Stavrou and Kountouris (IEEE Transactions on Communications 2023) characterises dual-fidelity tradeoffs for semantic communication on stochastic semantic sources. Many task-oriented communication systems instead use designed sources, where the semantic object is a deterministic oracle allocation $\phi^(t)$ rather than a stochastic quantity given by nature. We isolate the subclass of designed sources under smooth concave utility with assumptions A1, A2 and Euclidean allocation codomain, and restrict the encoder class to deterministic common-category mappings. Within this subclass the SK exponential-tilting decoder and generalised Blahut--Arimoto iteration specialise to conditional-mean decoding and Lloyd--Max stationarity on $\phi^(t)$. When the second fidelity is a monotone single-letter distortion, the joint problem stays inside the SK admissible class; the common-category SK rate is lower-bounded by the max of the corresponding Shannon rate-distortion functions, with equality only when the common-category reconstruction is compatible and RDF-optimal. When the second fidelity is aggregate verification, the joint problem leaves the SK single-letter class and admits a constrained-design feasibility band $R_{\min}(\varepsilon^) \leq R \leq R_{\max}(\beta^)$ of width $\log_2(K_{\max}/K_{\min})$ bits in partition cardinality. The reduction and the band are scope statements on the SK apparatus, not modifications to it. A smart-grid economic-dispatch example with a non-technical-loss-detection contrast illustrates the band.

Back in nearly prehistoric times, FDR's administration established the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to address the lack of infrastructure in the impoverished Tennessee Valley.
We need an equivalent commitment to public transit as an essential utility, in both urban and rural areas - predictable, reliable, and meeting local needs.

June solar update: record high, but not by as much as I had hoped because we had a week of cloudy weather sneak in just before the end of the month.
Final numbers:
* 47% of total energy demand met (was hoping for >50%)
* 2.1 MWh produced (record high), 4.5 consumed, 2.4 net imported (record low)
* 520 kWh exported (record high)
As usual, a few more days for the billing cycle to end before I get the official utility numbers since that's not aligned to the cal…
