The hallway started the day this meh grey-lilac colour, which had become very grubby and marked, and has ended it a nice invisible shade of mangolia. Next step is the stairwell and upstairs landing, maybe tomorrow otherwise next weekend. We'll be changing the pictures to show a few that have been in storage for years. The convergence guarantees geometric decay of the bias towards the invariant measure independently of the initialization for all functions controlled by a dominating function V. A key advantage of the approach is that it bypasses the need to establish a global minorization condition, which is often substantially more difficult to verify in practice, while yielding stronger convergence guarantees than global minorization. Optimal convergence bounds in a minimax sense of the framework are established. The utility of the framework is demonstrated through applications to the P'olya-Gamma and Kolmogorov-Gamma Gibbs samplers. We also show qualitative hyper-V uniform ergodicity convergence for two-variable Gibbs samplers can be inferred by the form of the invariant measure, bypassing convergence analysis entirely.

I’ve been using this rolling cart for years. It‘s a mobile work space for small projects. I load the middle shelf with tools and parts, and roll it to the job site. I use the top shelf as a work bench. Bottom shelf is for trash. It gives me a designated place to rest my tools so I don’t have to hunt for them later - Horizontal surfaces are an attractive nuisance for me.
When not used for projects, top shelf is extra laundry folding space.

D is on soups, prob an asparagus and a mushroom, and I'm on baked potatoes, cauliflower cheese and fish curry (the latter not for D who is veggie). In 2001 there were no iphones, email was the predominant form of all online communications, people were arguing about the utility of TCP MD5 auth on BGP sessions, and there was no such thing as passive DNS.
I was a volunteer helping with the "shownet" at Networld Interop in Atlanta on September 11. This would be the last N I I would attend.
Volunteers from umich brought up a live TV news stream via IP multicast from their university into a TV by the NOC where many of the teams and vendors could watch events unfold. I believe we saw the second plane hit on that TV that morning.
Surely a bit of exaggeration of our importance, but some couldn't help but wonder about the potential loss to the Internet community if there was some sort of attack in Atlanta that day.
The first rumor/conspiracy I heard was when someone told me a number of people of a certain religious persuasion did not show up for work at CNN that day, as if they all were in on it.
I remember the same night, many bars and restaurants were open. I remember seeing some (not many) people I knew partying almost like nothing happened and I will forever feel guilt just for being there.
My friends from umich and I ended up driving back home due to days-long closure/restrictions of the airspace. For weeks after ever I'd get triggered when I heard a plane in the sky, an eventually increasingly occurrence when you live and work around the Loop in Chicago.
Infosec was already becoming increasingly important, but that day was perhaps a real milestone when it began to eventually eclipse networking in importance, organizational decision making, and commercial product focus.

Back from two weeks vacation. My (work) M2 MacBook is connected to the Wi-Fi but says it has no internet connection. All the other devices have a working connection, so I turn off and on the Wi-Fi. It doesn’t work, so I reboot the Mac. It should be a good thing anyway after two weeks sleeping. And surprise, it’s now booting in recovery! 😱 I try to repair with Disk Utility (several times), I reboot (several more times) but it’s still stuck in recovery.
I’m now reluctantly installing Tahoe (I was still on Sequoia) hoping to make it boot again. 🤞
I regret not shutting it down completely before going on vacation…

So LLMs have utility for programming but not _by themselves_, only in conjunction with a harness that essentially brute-forces text generation until it passes deterministic criteria.
Those (non-LLM parts) can be tested in an automated way, by iteratively syntax checking, compiling, running tests etc.
But this doesn't apply to literally anything else: there's no deterministic syntax checking, compiling or veracity-testing for human language—yet tech bros still have this misguided notion that LLMs work great for _everything_ because they work (sometimes) for generating computer code.
(I'm not going into economic or ethical problems with LLM here on purpose; this is purely an observation from a technical and epistemological point of view.)
