SS - Live at Shinjuku Loft (1979)
I wish there was more of this amazing footage 🤩
SS was one of the first Japanese punk bands, and they had a really cool style.
Active between 1978 and 1979 in Kyoto. Never released any music in their brief time. EP in 1984 is pretty good.

These contexts by and large don’t just exist on their own; we have to •make• them. It’s not a thing you can just decide to do and then it’s there. It’s damned hard.
Software folks should pay more attention to the musicians and artists who are creating artistic spaces: neighborhood festivals, house concerts (whether “salon” or punk band in the basement), converted warehouses, street art, that kind of thing. Watch how artists on the margins don’t just •look for• space, but •create• it — and how it’s rooted in community. That’s a model to follow.

Which bands? 😂 I only see and hear really amazing stuff coming out of the oi scene lately all over, like- even more great stuff than I've ever heard before 🤔

Just finished "The Terraformers" by Annalee Newitz (@…). It was recommended as a "solarpunk" book, and I'm currently on a quest to find more speculative fiction as good as Le Guin or Butler, so I was eager to dig in. Having tagged the author (hi) I'll try to be polite here, but I'll admit I was disappointed.
Newitz clearly has a powerful imagination and there's lots of great stuff in the book, but it's not at all pushing boundaries in terms of imagining future societies. I think the message and intent was good in a lot of places, but off or self-contradictory in others. I absolutely adore the relatively small point made at the end about revolutions being complicated and not boiling down to heroes and battles, but despite the book's attempt to avoid that, I think it still falls into that pattern. Without too many spoilers, the way that some big problems are resolved near the end leans too much on a legal framework without questioning how it's enforced, and that resolution then means that a few heroic acts are enough to tip the balance, which undermines the point about messy histories.
The biggest contradiction of the book to my mind though is with a central theme. The book really explores a world in which "anyone of any species can be a person, as long as we just bioengineer them to be intelligent enough," and it tries to make a point about how engineering limited intelligences is cruel. At several points characters comment about how personhood shouldn't depend on intelligence. There's even a brief quote about how maybe rivers could be people... But... the point could have been "anyone can be a person, regardless of intelligence." This would have made for much more interesting philosophical territory to explore IMO (how do we then bound personhood; how do we reconcile predator/prey relations between persons, etc.). These are also questions that the indigenous traditions Newitz draws on (and consulted about, as mentioned in the acknowledgements) has interesting answers for, but we don't get to explore them through Newitz' world, and because the question of personhood regresses to the question of intelligence, it feels like the moral philosophy of the ERT folks isn't any better than the "InAss" they disparage.
It's not a bad book overall, even if it doesn't engage with the questions I'm hungry to see others engage with. Newitz' efforts to sketch out a more vibrant and diverse future are still monumental and inspiring in a lot of ways. I'm just still looking for something more. Ultimately, I think it lives up to the "solar" but not very much to the "punk."

CH3 - “Fear of Life” LP (1982)
This is such a great album, and yet I don’t see it mentioned often when reading about bands from this era.
Their sound was a really interesting mix of punk and traditional rock, which was unlike most of the other LA bands they played with.
Some really good variety from song-to-song too.

I didn’t realize that Jerry Brown was Governor of California from 2011 to 2019 because I knew the Dead Kennedys were singing about him being Governor in the 1980s. I guess he was also Governor from 1975 to 1983. I need more modern day punk songs to educate me about elected officials.

I am completely fascinated by this small two-minute animation by eco feminist and punk rock musician(!) Catherine Weir.
It inhabits the same space as the work of Olga Tokarczuk. The sound is uplifting!
All my life I've felt that surrealism is one of the few art forms that can reveal the hidden relationships between nature and humanity.

An animation consisting of four panels, each a different colour. In the first one, butterflies emerge from an opening in a woman's abdomen, in the second, a woman's fingertops are transformed into the heads of sheep, in the third, two women are speaking, but one keeps transforming into a bird, in the fourth, a man throws a rope up over a tree branch, preliminary to hanging a woman by it. A crow lands and pushes the rope off the branch, in solidarity with the woman.

Just finished "The First Rule of Punk" by Celia C. Pérez. A great book about adolescent identity, complicated (but benign) parental relationships, punk rock, and zines. A really nice cozy book, with some low-stakes drama and a lot of heart.

I might go see Rumkicks tonight.
My issue is is it`s quite expensive and they are only the pre-opening band.
The mainliners are The Casualties, a vintage Punk band. A cool band but I don`t know them much.

Been listening to this new LP 'Manic Phase' by PLEASURE this weekend - this is some great, unhinged punk rock. Riffy. Dynamic. Big contender for me this year. Mostly very short, fast songs except the last two, which are almost 4 minutes and almost 5 respectively. A really wild record.
