Been listening to this new LP 'Manic Phase' by PLEASURE this weekend - this is some great, unhinged punk rock. Riffy. Dynamic. Big contender for me this year. Mostly very short, fast songs except the last two, which are almost 4 minutes and almost 5 respectively. A really wild record.

As I continue to listen for the first time in decades to my collection of 7 inches (mostly upper Midwestern punk and ska from the early 90s), I'm struck by two things. First, while much of it is genuinely good, a lot of it is not, so much so that even nostalgia is powerless. Second, and more importantly, even the bad stuff sounds like nothing so much as freedom to me. These groups, like my friends and I, made things they wanted, without waiting for permission. Kids can be pretty cool.

'Monster Feelings' is the new tape by Waukegan, Illinois's FREAK ACTIVITY, which is self-described on his Bandcamp here as 'One dude in a room full of instruments and a microphone'. Bedroom post-synth-egg-punk maybe? It's great. Catchy and hooky as fuck. The last song is wild- like 80s kinda. Very strange. Dig all of it, been really hooked on it.
