It’s still unclear to me whether that incident was •targeting• the high school or merely •next to• the high school. I’ve heard conflicting reports from neighbors on that. One rumor is that school staff were abducted, but I don’t yet have solid confirmation on that I trust. I’ve also heard that Bovino was personally present at that raid / attack at the high school.
Either way…yeah, you can see why they’d cancel school.
This guy’s hilarious! Ricky Mokel. Never heard of him. YouTube doin me a solid poppin him up there. I’m just guessing #ND.

Sadly, my old off-brand, 32", 1080p, 60 Hz TV set slowly fritzed before my eyes after 9 years and 7 months of continuous service. Good game.
Even more depressing, for the last week of tedious browsing, I can't seem to settle on another dirt-cheap ~€300, non-32", non-Sony, non-Samsung, 4K, at-least-a-solid-60Hz TV set that I am confident would not die on me or would not run out of smart software support within the next three years.

I really think that we _are_ starting to build those tools. I'm party to a lot of discussions about how to use these tools well, and a lot of that starts to look like systems design: what are controls? What are the feedback loops? Where do we need to add new frictions? Where do we need to eliminate old bottlenecks?
We are still very, _very_ early in this.
But the work is getting done, and a lot of us 'haters' need to get in the drivers seat and start putting up useful critique like mttaggart's. I don't agree with the entire article, but it's solid work and solid case report. It’s very good stuff. We need a lot more of these conversations.
And we need to let people hate it. Not to be confused with obstinate blocking, but to have the feelings of hating it, of disliking the processes it engenders, of finding those new footings — or rejecting the bad ones. We can't look at this clearly unless we have the space to hate it.
I generally hate buying new computing devices and try to make them last as long as possible. I bought a used/refurb iPad 5th Gen in 2022 for $199 and got 2 years of solid use before I upgraded to a 6th Gen in 2024 (for $170) so I could use an Apple Pencil.
I then put the old 5th Gen on my trainer bike as a video player and it still works great.
But sadly, two years in the 6th Gen now has dead spots on the screen. I may need to replace it.

"They discovered that land surface temperatures increased by an average of 2°C (3.6°F) in the months after an AI data centre started operations. In the most extreme cases, the increase in temperature was 9.1°C (16.4°F). The effect wasn’t limited to the immediate surroundings of the data centres: the team found increased temperatures up to 10 kilometres away. Seven kilometres away, there was only a 30 per cent reduction in the intensity."

So, decided to make the `sisyphus-client` Docker image a multi-stage build because it was a really large image. Ended up taking it from 1.3GB to 708MB which isn't too shabby. Unfortunately, that's about as small as I'm gonna be able to get it with all of the encoding binaries/libraries that I have to install.
Still, pretty solid reduction in container size.

Abstract: Nuclear security operations and forensic investigations require the utilization of a suite of instruments ranging from passive gamma spectrometers to high-precision laboratory sample analyzers. Gamma spectroscopy survey is further broken down into wide-area search performed with large-volume scintillator-based mobile survey spectrometers which are integrated with geographic position sensors for mapping and identification of hot zones, and high-precision long-dwell measurements using solid state spectrometers for follow-on characterization to establish isotopic content and ratios. While performing well at detecting the presence, quantity and type of radioactivity, all of these methods have limited ability to determine the location of a source of radioactivity. In recent years, technology advances have resulted in gamma imager devices which can create an image of the distribution of radioactive sources using the gamma emissions which accompany radioactive decay, and overlay this on an optical photograph of the environment. These gamma imaging devices have arisen out of methods developed for medical physics, experimental particle physics, and astrophysics, resulting in a proliferation of different technological approaches. Those responsible for establishing a nuclear security concept of operations, require guidance to choose the proper gamma imager for each of the application spaces in a tiered response. Here the results of an intercomparison of two gamma imagers based on two widely different technologies, semiconductor and scintillator detectors, are presented. The optimal utilization of these imaging technologies in a tiered response is discussed based on the results of the trial. Finally, an outlook on future directions for gamma imaging advances is provided.

Experimental study of turbulent thermal diffusion of inertial particles in a convective turbulence forced by oscillating grids

Abstract: We investigate the phenomenon of turbulent thermal diffusion of inertial solid particles in laboratory experiments with convective turbulence forced by one or two oscillating grids in the air flow. Turbulent thermal diffusion causes a non-diffusive contribution to turbulent flux of particles described in terms of an effective pumping velocity directed opposite to the gradient of the mean fluid temperature. For inertial particles, this effective pumping velocity depends on the Stokes and Reynolds numbers. In the experiments, fluid velocity and spatial distribution of inertial particles are measured using Particle Image Velocimetry system, and the temperature field is measured in many locations by a temperature probe equipped with 12 thermocouples. Measurements of temperature and particle number density spatial distributions have demonstrated formation of large-scale clusters of inertial particles in the vicinity of the mean temperature minimum due to turbulent thermal diffusion. In the experiments, the effective pumping velocity resulting in formation of large-scale clusters of inertial particles (having the diameter $10 \mu m$) is in 2.5 times larger than that for non-inertial particles (having the diameter $0.7 \mu m$). This is in an agreement with the theoretical predictions.

Young Sherlock (2026): solid 7.5/10 because I really like Moriarty's origin story. Sherlock's wasn't that much of a surprise but also interesting.
Very solid performance. Gomez really shored up the defending and Kerkez and Frimpong were both terrific.

Not that anyone cares what my take on Lara Croft is (I’ve played I think the first game for a few hours) but that pic of Sophie Turner as LC looks pretty damned solid to me.
I actually didn’t recognize her (Sophie) at first.
Okay here's my hot elitist opinion for the moment.
If you need the more expensive models, you're either not a very good programmer, or you're being lazy. (and sometimes there's good reasons to be lazy, I'm sure)
But it's _amazing_ how much better the cheaper, lighter, more economical and ecologically friendly LLMs are when you're actually working to craft a test environment, good guardrails and a solid inner developer loop.
You know: the same skills that make a safe, speedy environment for experimentation for people.
It's almost like throwing more brute force a things is actually brute force.
Gomez has looked really solid. Cut out a decent looking counter before it could get started.
