The metric system is 150 years old. The metre originated in the French Revolution, but its definition has changed many times since - ABC News abc.net.au/news/science/2025-0

new book about medicine history, "droplets" theory etc
"Science writer Carl Zimmer’s latest book is a brilliant history of medicine that takes us from Louis Pasteur’s germ theory of the 19th century to present day. Along the way, it offers an anthropological study of medical culture — a culture capable of ignoring science when it wants to. ...
"If COVID-19 spread in droplets, then it was worthwhile to keep people two metres apart, to put up plexiglas barriers around checkout stands, and make supermarket aisles one-way. Sanitizing countertops could break the chain of infection.
"But if COVID-19 was airborne, all those measures were pointless."
Bit of an exaggeration in that part of the article. The 2m distance does put you outside the densest clouds of exhaled breath, and sanitising countertops helps against other diseases. But yeah. A lot of effort wrongly expended due to the prevailing myth.

A friend of mine sent me Iceland (the UK supermarket)‘s official “fuck the management consultants” page, on their actual website.

At a local supermarket yesterday. Someone had decided to do the MAGA-esque thing of the massive-jeep/truck/thing-with-flag-hanging-off-the-back…except instead of a US flag, it was for the Democratic Republic of Congo. 🇨🇩

Every once in a while I'm reminded of this very fine example of clerical creativity I witnessed back in '22

For some reason, this does not strike as a rational act by ICE. Who do they think are responsible for getting food from the farm to the markets? (Critiquing on woke values is pointless, so I'm appealing to the self interest of those who think food comes from the supermarket)

Your Asian foods destination
Taken 2 April 2025
#Retail #Supermarket

Shelves behind a glass door in a supermarket. There are a few price labels attached to the shelves, but the shelves are empty of any merchandise. A sign adhered to the top of the door reads in plain letters: "Your Asian Foods Destination". It's impossible to read the product names on the price labels. But two labels say $3.99 marked down to $2.99. Two others say $6.49 marked down to $5.49. And several labels say "Buy 1 get 1 free". The ceiling is barely visible in the photo past the shelves: a …

Supermarket chain Lidl is making its heavy-duty vehicle chargers at depots in the Netherlands available to other truck users by prior arrangement. This is a great way to increase charger (and on-site renewables!) utilisation and extend truck charging options!

We've seen some lovely cars out and about lately. The E-type was at the supermarket today, the other two parked up at Shobdon airfield recently. There were other classic cars there too but these really stood out to me. I would cheerfully zoom off in any of these despite being an #EV bore 😄 We used to have an MGF and for years my mum had MGs. These days we drive an electric MG which is ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.
