An international group is organizing an observing campaign through the Citizen Science Working Group of the #LUMIO mission: LUMIO is an ESA space mission to observe lunar #impact flashes (LIFs) from space, on the lunar far side (#Geminid meteoroid stream, 13-15 Dec 2025. During the maximum of the stream, the number of visible impact flashes will be higher than during non-shower times, therefore there is a good chance of detecting at least some impact flashes.
Observations can be made using moderately-sized telescopes and a video camera. On the website https://lif.mi.imati.cnr.it/home_page.php there are now a recording of a thorough talk about the project and its slides at https://lif.mi.imati.cnr.it/open_item_page.php?item_idk=LDB-000000001 and slides about the preferred analysis software ALFI at https://lif.mi.imati.cnr.it/open_item_page.php?item_idk=LDB-000000002 -if you want to join in the LGC please sign on by 21 November.
My random track stream just slid into a chapter of The Year of the Flood, Margaret Atwood.
If you only know the physical book get the audio book as well as it includes the songs.

Well that took a bit longer than I hoped thanks to some derps on my part, but I'm parsing incoming PCIe DLLPs and validating their checksums.
Next step will be to figure out that a type 0x40 DLLP with payload 074040 is actually an InitFC1-P DLLP for virtual circuit 0 for 29 headers and 1024 data bytes.
And do something useful with that information.

This via @… deserves underlining:
The behavior you are seeing from ICE and from the Trump regime is the behavior of people who are scared.
Their bluster is fear. Their threats are fear. Their aggression is fear. Their defensiveness is fear. Their scrambling to keep their faces hidden and their actions secret is fear. Their desperate stream of liearrhea is fear. Their panic is fear.
They are acting tough, but they are not acting like people who are winning.
Keep them afraid.

Trump is very, very angry about a New York Times piece
that carefully documents his obvious physical decline.
Trump raged over the piece,
letting out a stream of lies about his performance in office
and even attacking the reporter who wrote the piece as ugly.
This may seem typical of Trump,
but we think it gets at something deeper.
Trump’s entire political mystique is premised on the fiction that he’s a strong, virile, formidable figure

I'm pretty sure Kiley is getting ready for a post-Trump *anti-Trump* GOP. Like they were towards Bush after 2008.
I hope that's right. It is also possible that the GOP will notice his stream of NPR and MSNBC appearances and launch the flying monkeys. https://
I'm trying to play through the implications of some software I've been thinking about maybe designing.
It's legal to make a digital copy of the media that you own (videos, audio) physical copies of. It's legal to give a physical copy of your media to someone else or loan it out, which transfers your viewing license while they have It. Then it should also be legal to let someone else use a digital copy of your media given that you don't also use it at the same time. So as long as you keep track of your license, you should be able to let exactly one person stream some media you own.
If someone else then "steals" that content and views it without a license then that has to be legally on them, otherwise streaming platforms would be liable whenever someone cracks some DRM.
So then, it should be completely legal to set up a local community media library streaming service where you can share content you own licenses to as long as you track your license count and don't let more people stream at any given time than there are licenses available.
Is there something obvious I'm missing (aside from the MPAA and RIAA don't care about the law and will just sue anyone they can just to make an example)?

The other option is to forget the FM and do it 100% digital.
Basically a single channel scope on the tx side then stream raw adc codes over the fiber to the rx which dac's it into your real scope (or build a digital receiver that just implements triggering and buffering on the remote sampling heads)
Architecturally the simplest option but probably expensive.

Once in a while, when watching a video on my TV, the audio stream fails to start on the sound bar. Nothing shows that this is happening, but there's no audio.
Usually, we'll just stop/start the video (turn it off and on again).
Increasingly (it seems; maybe it's always been this way and I just notice now), videos are starting intentionally silently. The audio only starts after an intro or title sequence.
"Is it broken? Or is this just 'art’?” is a commo…
No, it's not. I've been signed in for 21 years until you logged me out just now. But for some reason, almost every site I have a login for has decided I've logged out, on multiple unrelated machines even. Sure GMail/Google but also Apple, Mastodon, bluesky, GitHub, reddit, even some TV channels I stream. Not all at once, but over the last few days. Is this something I didn't hear about?

I’ve worked over the past year to reduce the amount of noise in my consciousness on a daily basis.
By that I mean - information noise, not literal sounds “noise”. (That problem was solved long ago by some good earplugs and noise canceling earphones.)
I’ve gotten used to spending less time on social media, regularly blocking most apps on my devices (anything with a feed news, most work communication apps, etc.), putting my phone and other devices aside for extended periods of time. Often go to work places with my iPad explicitly having its WiFi turned off and selecting cafes that don’t offer WiFi at all.
Negotiated better boundaries at work and in personal life where I exchange messages with people less often but try to make those interactions more meaningful, and people rarely expect me to respond to requests in less than 24 hours. Spent a lot of time setting up custom notification settings on all apps that would allow it, so I get fewer pings. With software, choosing fewer cloud-based options and using tools that are simple and require as few interruptions as possible.
Accustomed myself to lower-tech versions of doing things I like to do: reading on paper, writing by hand, drawing in physical sketchbooks, got a typewriter for typing without a screen. Choosing to call people on audio more, trying to make more of an effort to see people in person. Going to museums to look at art instead of browsing Pinterest. Defaulting to the library when looking for information.
I’m commenting on this now for two reasons:
1. I am pretty proud of myself for how much I’ve actually managed to reduce the constant stream of modern life esp. as a remote worker in tech!
2. Now that I’ve reached a breaking point of reducing enough noise that it’s NOTICEABLE - I am struck by the silence. I don’t know what to do with it. I don’t know how to navigate it and fill it. I made this space to be able to read and write and think more deeply - for now I feel stuck in limbo where I’m just reacquainting myself with the concept of having any space in my mind at all.

Many of us are in @… and @… ’s situation here: plastics are collected for recycling, but few/none enter the recycling stream. In that situation:
- Robin’s response is the first and best one: use less.
- In addition, I’d advocate for (1) continuing to recycle what you can’t avoid using and (2) give that city gov endless headaches about their failure to recycle. Show there’s demand for recyclability, get whatever tiny fraction does get recycled out of the waste stream, •and• make headaches for people in positions of power for plastic failing to live up to that demand.
I would •not• just stop recycling. Don’t just give up. My 2¢.

The first of at least seven straight days of rain begins Friday in the Bay Area
as an atmospheric river is set to soak the region with a stream of subtropical moisture from Hawaii.
The phenomenon, known as a Pineapple Express, generally brings heavy rain and mountain snow to the West Coast.
“When it reaches the west coast, the Pineapple Express can dump as much as 5 inches of rain on California in one day.”
Friday marks the first of what could be three different round…
