My red-white Brompton folding bicycle leaning on a low wall in the night with rather bright "be seen" lights on the handlebar stem, under the saddle and on the rear end of the rack.
A suspension bridge with blue railings and dusty wooden ground. The night sky is cloudy in sepia tone. Some lights behind trees in the background.
A modern, artsy bridge with red-brown-ish guarding walls with round holes (and quite some graffiti) and neon lights on top shining downwards. Close to the viewpoint the walls are several meters high. But they get much lower towards the end of the bridge. The sky is pitch black.
View from a hillslope down into a rather flat valley. Two lighted streets with meadows around them in the front, city lights in the background. In between a dark river which mirrors some of the city lights.

lots to unpack in this article about Mayor Breed downzoning the west side but:
"the city has until 2026 to complete a rezoning that would add capacity for 37,000 units of housing to San Francisco’s current pipeline, which has about 80,000 units approved. Most of the approved projects are on hold for economic reasons."
80k units approved but not profitable enough to build! zoning schmoning, we need social housing.

A good friend who teaches at universities in Kyōto got married late in life, and had me give a speech in Japanese at the reception. I had wanted to keep it simple, but once my Japanese wife got involved, I ended up with all sorts of formal clothing and a more elaborate gift. The ceremonies were held at a hotel in the central city. The wedding chapel was inside the hotel but had windows above it. Nikki Haley won her first contest in the Republican presidential nomination race on Sunday after triumphing in Washington, D.C.'s primary.
(It won’t likely change the contest’s trajectory.)

After three days of voting, polls in the Washington race closed at 7 p.m. Eastern on Sunday.
Though only 19 delegates were stake, Haley perhaps had her best chance of defeating Trump in a race where he performed poorly in the last competitive GOP presidential contest in 2016.

Standard walk from the central tourist area of Kyōto to the World Heritage temple Kiyomizudera. Everywhere is verdant after much rain since March or earlier, and this was a clear day in late April. See details in the captions.
#travel #nature

Iconic Kiyomizudera, jutting out from the southeast corner of the eastern mountain range (東山) of Kyōto, has a commanding view of the city, and on a clear day the skyscrapers of Ōsaka are dimly visible 50 kilometers to the south.
At the foot of the Eastern Mountains, Maruyama Park is on the way to Kiyomizudera by the scenic route from Kawaramachi Station across the Shijō Bridge and through Yasaka Shrine. These irises are the earliest to bloom this year.
Wisteria are late this spring in many places, perhaps because of the long cold winter and rough weather through March.
View from along the Kamo River, under the Great Shijō Bridge in the central tourist area of Shijō Kawaramachi and Gion. The building on the right is the Kabuki theater, and the one on the left can be seen in black-and-white photos from over a century ago.

Annapolis to ban new drive-thrus in effort to expand walkability outside city's historic core.
Which raises a question: Why is it okay for drivers to stop in a traffic lane when lined up for a drive-thru? If you stopped while a passenger ran into a store & waited on line (let alone stood there on foot to make a political statement), you'd be honked at by drivers & told by police to move on.

New drone footage shows Chasiv Yar
— set amid green fields and woodland
— pounded into an apocalyptic vista.
The destruction is reminiscent of the cities of Bakhmut and Avdiivka,
which Ukraine yielded after months of bombardment and huge losses for both sides.
The strategically important city has been under attack by Russian forces for months.
Capturing it would give Russia control of a hilltop from which it can attack other cities that form the backbone …

Incredible example of lying with graphs from Caltrans. The bike lane pilot on the Richmond–San Rafael Bridge reduced collisions, but they made it look like collisions increased.
Specifically, they divided collisions by vehicle miles traveled. But California's goal is to reduce vehicle miles traveled. So they took two good things achieved by the pilot, and made them cancel out to look like a bad thing. #BikeTooter

Before vs. After Rates of Most Common Incident Types & Severity
Weekdays Only (6am-9am)

Shows incidents broken down by type (rear end and side-swipe) and severity (no injury and complaint of pain). In each case, the number of incidents after implementing the pilot is the same as or less than before the pilot, but the bar is bigger, and has the same or a larger number on top of it. A label at the bottom explains: "per million miles traveled."

San Francisco Police have more racial disparity in deadly force than 92% of big-city police departments. We need more accountability, not less. Vote #NoOnPropE by Tuesday.
source: policescorecard.org/ca/poli…

Police Scorecard for SFPD:

Police Violence By Race:

Black people are 5% of the population, 34% of people arrested, and 29% of people killed. Latinx people are 15% of the population, 28% of people arrested, and 38% of people killed.

That's more racial disparities in deadly force than 92% of departments.

This ranking biases toward places lots of people walk/bike to begin with. Tons of pedestrians/cyclists at Market & Octavia = tons of opportunities for injury.
Very few people walk or bike near 19th Ave & Sloat, but it still made the citywide top 10. So if you're wondering where, if *you* decide to walk there, you'll have the highest risk of getting hit, 19th Ave & Sloat is by far the most dangerous on the list.

Chronicle: SF’s most dangerous intersections are concentrated in one part of the city.

The problem with the #WarOnDrugs wasn't just that relatively harmless cannabis was included, but also the hard stuff must be addressed as a public health rather than criminal issue. That debate is being tragically lost right now in San Francisco…
