Inspired by Hank Green’s fun new timeline of photos from the Artemis II mission, I wrote up an answer to a question that's more pertinent these days than it may seem: Why are the Artemis II photos on Flickr? https://anildash.com/2026/04/30/artemis-photos-flickr/
There are three kinds of #winter days:
1. Days when the heat pump can handle both floor heating and domestic hot water heating.
2. Days when I let it initially heat DHW in the morning, then switch to using an electric heating element, while the heat pump focuses on floor heating.
3. Days when I use electric DHW heating entirely, and let the heat pump start running floor heating from early morning hours.

Most days, I watch YouTube videos while I eat lunch. Today, I'm watching something about the last known photo of Hitler, and they mentioned that when Theodor Tolsdorff surrendered to the Allies, someone took his pornography as a war trophy. I don't know if that would be my first choice.

The attack mounted jointly by Israel and the US on Iran had been planned for months,
but the timing, in the midst of negotiations between Iran and the US,
will again raise questions about whether Washington was ever serious about striking a deal with Tehran.
In June last year, Israel, with the US later in tow, launched a 10-day attack on Iran just three days before Iran and the US were due to meet for a sixth set of talks.
So this assault, in the middle of a second ne…

Without naming names: I don't like RSA key issues with mirrors, so two consecutive kernel updates aren't working out properly. Changing mirrors doesn't help either. It was what drove me away 3 years ago; the update to KDE 6 took 3 or 4 days, breaking the whole shebang. Coloring outside the lines sometimes invokes a black and white response by me.

Software development these days really reminds me of what large political parties do—no shred of thinking about the whole, not even a little bit of conviction, just churning out mid ever more milquetoast "features" designed to eek out a little more compliance.
Moral stances and ethics be damned.
"One box of strawberries was all it took for this kind man to transition from a neighbor to a friend that our whole family cherishes. These days, Ella and Emiliano will yell “JESSEEEEE!!!” as soon as his house comes into view. They’ll run up for hugs and unapologetically ask for Ritz Crackers, which he picks up in bulk at Costco, specifically for them..."
I don't get ill often, thankfully, but I've been struck by an absolute bastard of a bug over the past few days.
Wrote up my notes after using Bazzite for a few days. I've really liked this experience and may switch for real to using a Linux desktop for the first time in 20 years. But maybe not Bazzite, I'm not a fan of the atomic OS concept.
Bagmuck
I'm going to put this here, for now and maybe develop it further.
As a student I worked on a market garden which also had a small line in agricultural supplies. Every so often we had the job of loading bags of inorganic fertiliser onto lorries or trailers. The word used for it was bagmuck.
I think bagmuck captures rather well what this is. It's a substitute for muck, dung, manure, that comes in a bag. From ICI in those days.
Bagmuck /contd.

Two days in R-studio has made my brain an utter mess. Doing extra work on the side at night feels more heavy than ever. But sooon - I see a vaccation in the horizon
I think, and it may be an unpopular opinion among my peers indeed, that we need to learn to actually make this into an Engineering discipline.
I *want* to develop code that one can reasonably trust to perform life sustaining functionality, much like I reasonably trust every bridge I drive over not to collapse under me.
We’re far from it, but these days, it seems we’ve actively decided to do *exactly the opposite of that*, and that I just can’t be a part of.

SysOM-AI: Continuous Cross-Layer Performance Diagnosis for Production AI Training

Abstract: Performance diagnosis in production-scale AI training is challenging because subtle OS-level issues can trigger cascading GPU delays and network slowdowns, degrading training efficiency across thousands of GPUs. Existing profiling tools are limited to single system layers, incur prohibitive overhead (10--30%), or lack continuous deployment capabilities, resulting in manual analyses spanning days. We argue that continuous, cross-layer observability enabled by OS-level instrumentation and layered differential diagnosis is necessary to address this gap. We introduce SysOM-AI, a production observability system that continuously integrates CPU stack profiling, GPU kernel tracing, and NCCL event instrumentation via adaptive hybrid stack unwinding and eBPF-based tracing, incurring less than 0.4% overhead. Deployed at Alibaba across over 80,000 GPUs for more than one year, SysOM-AI helped diagnose 94 confirmed production issues, reducing median diagnosis time from days to approximately 10 minutes.

US secretly plotting ground attack despite message of diplomacy

Iranian state media have published a message from Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf marking 30 days since the start of the US-Israeli war.
“The enemy openly sends a message of negotiation and secretly plans a ground attack,”
Ghalibaf, who has served as speaker of the parliament since 2020, wrote in his message carried by the Tasnim news agency.

Companies that if I’m honest I hate, though I try hard not to hate. They are the vampires of our world ..."

Four weeks into a war that was going to take four days,
and that has so far cost the US about $30-40bn
and Israel $300m a day,
Washington is further away from a diplomatic agreement with Iran than it was in May 2025.
Not only has the war failed to persuade Iran to agree to dismantle its nuclear programme in the comprehensive and irreversible way the US demanded in a 15-point paper that it tabled on 23 May last year,
Washington is now having to negotiate to reopen…
