I used the acronym "LLMs" after the word "AI" in a school parents' meeting today and only one other parent ( my husband) knew what it was.
Is it just a bit of jargon? Completely unknown? Or am I out of touch?
Here are some historical drawings by @… we coincidentally uncovered today. The original drawing that inspired the version that became Glenda (and was also philw's vismon icon, not that he approved), the drawing that became the Glenda image for Plan 9, and the hamster drawing for WFMU that mutated into the Go Gopher.

i went to refresh my memory after a discussion of a security issue today and as best as i can tell, no commonly used OS has ever had malloc(0) return NULL, including historical ones¹. windows, glibc, musl, BSDs, all return a non-NULL pointer to some object

I started watching Midsommar today (thanks, @…) - I'm like, over halfway done - this movie could've been edited, man. SUPER slow burn. I mean they probably could've cut like, at least 30 minutes of this stuff.
I'm working from the office today and for reasons we're not in the usual part of the building. So, poking around in a less commonly visited area I found this gem from the Olden Days.

UK FCDO decision to cut back aid to education and to gender initiatives is devastating.

I spent today reflecting and figuring out why I got severely depressed after the Pride party Saturday night. Honestly, that night was the most insanely incredible, mind-blowingly spectacular night I have ever experienced in my entire existence. It was an explosion of joy and queerness unlike anything I’ve ever felt, pure, radiant, overwhelming happiness that hit me with the force o…
Mitsuharu Yamamoto’s Emacs Mac port provides the ‘mac-osa-script’ function, which allows you to use JavaScript to control Mac apps using JavaScript (JXA), in addition to AppleScript.
Some years ago, I made a small package to insert links from Mac apps into Emacs, inspired by grab-mac-link, but simpler, in part due to using JXA.
Today I finally took some time to add documentation. If you use the Emacs Mac port, maybe it’s of interest.

Visited a national museum's relatively newly installed, sub-zero photo negative freezer today.
It doesn't work. Relative humidity varies wildly. They need to commission a major overhaul.

- all industries put up with under performing infrastructure
- it only works one in five installations

I got this post by @… in my email today, it was forwarded while it still was attributed to Liz Cheney with this preface which I agree with:
"When she was in Congress, I disagreed with almost everything she said and every vote she made. But on the transcendent issue of our time — protecting our democracy from Trump and the forces of authoritarianism and fascism — Liz Cheney has been correct, clear, and courageous."
Turns out the message is not by Liz Cheney but is well worth reading as a kick in the ass to the Democratic Party.

Just got a small space heater and damn it’s so much more comfortable here now
As a @… fan I’d prefer if my AC/heat pump supported heating mode, but welp it was already installed when I moved here so an electric heater will do it for the 2 days a year it’s actually cold enough for that to be useful here. Getting all that heat from the bedroom to the living room would be a problem anyway.
And I didn’t even need to make a fire hazard in order to use it since a 20A outlet was already around due to the coffee thingy, yay!
It’s been on for just around 40mins and it’s already sooo much better in here (the temp sensor is not on the side the heater is pointing to (the sofa) so it’ll take a while for it to reflect the change specially since this is a big room (kitchen dinner living), but just pointing the heater to where I’m at is enough to make it a comfortable temperature (and probably even way too hot in a bit)).
I’ve been wanting this for a while, but it never felt worth it bc we don’t really have many cold days here. Tho this year we got some more I think and today was specially cold (9~11°C) so I decided to just do it. Extra points bc it was available on fucking iFood of all places so it arrived less than an hour after I ordered it lmao.

What?! No Taylors of Harrogate coffee?! So glad I've got some coffee bags stuffed in my case.

Small thing I noticed today: splitting `.mkv` files using `ffmpeg` via the `-ss` and `-t` options works great, but the resulting `.mkv` file contains the wrong number of frames in the metadata. Evidently the total frames from the source file gets written into the metadata instead of the resulting frames post-splitting which is annoying. Not a deal breaker, but kind of annoying...easy to fix with a quick run through `mkvmerge` but still just weird.

I often run into web pages that make me think "I wonder if this is the worst page on the Internet today."
Today's candidate is Bell's outages checker. The javascripty text box thing for the address is a mess, and reloading the results page (you know, a thing people might want to do to get an update on their ISP's current failure) makes you go through the address dance every time.
Maybe avoid piling on the back-breaking straws here, broken ISP…
My mum & sister and nephew were up here visiting us today. So we took them to Chester where we had a good mooch around the shops and the city walls. As well as tea and cakes, of course.
