We only have a small garden, and we mostly grow flowers in containers. Since the end of last week's warm weather the lobelia has been going absolutely great guns, and I popped outside at lunchtime to find five bees happily lapping pollen & nectar from this single container alone.
Elsewhere in the garden there were another 6 or 7 bees and two small white butterflies. This has made my day!

Good morning! Here is a bee waking up and stretching. This week I learned that this is the season you see a lot of bees sleeping on flowers. Many of them are male bees who are not welcome back in the hive. They live short lives where hopefully they get to mate before the end of the season. A shame they're reduced to only being breeders. This is actually a post about feminism.

My fair city of Roanoke attained “Bee City USA” status in 2022, which aims to “promote healthy, sustainable habitats for bees and other pollinators, responsible for the reproduction of nearly 90% of the world’s flowering plant species and one in every three bites of food we eat.”
Last night, a couple of garden clubs teamed up with the city to screen a new PBS Nature documentary, “My Garden of a Thousand Bees”.

It has been a super busy and tiring week… I took a moment to go outside and admire my driveway. Which is a weird thing to say!! 😂
I can’t believe how many different kinds of bees are buzzing in the flowers! And there are 30 Apples on EACH tree.
The clover is so nice to walk barefoot in, but I do keep an eye out for those bees!
I have reduced the watering now that it all seems established. Only 15min every 4 days. We are also on alternating-day water restrictions.
I am hoping that next summer it will be ok to either not water it at all, or only weekly at most as long as the pollinators are happy!
Reminder that life is good.

Is there an entomologist on the line? I have noticed at least 3 different bumble bees with this strange pale mark on the back (it's difficult to see clearly because they're never still).
I *think* it might be a kind of mite (varroa?) , they clearly feel it because I could see all the bees were stroking it occasionally with a leg, but they still continued flying and feeding. This was the best of about a hundred photos I tried to take with my phone!
