Honey bees remove 80% of pollen—leaving native bees with nothing #evironment
Honey bees remove 80% of pollen—leaving native bees with nothing #evironment
⭐️Honey bees vs. native pollinators
The damage does not stop with bees. The study highlights that honey bee pollination leads to poorer plant offspring quality compared to native bee pollination.
This happens because honey bees often visit many flowers on the same plant before moving to another.
This behavior increases the chances of self-pollination, which can lead to inbreeding depression in plants.
Such effects could ripple through ecosystems. Plants that rely on nat…

A research paper published by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), though not yet peer-reviewed,
has found nearly all bee colonies suffering collapse had contracted a bee virus spread by
parasitic mites that appear to have developed resistance to the main chemicals used to control them.

We only have a small garden, and we mostly grow flowers in containers. Since the end of last week's warm weather the lobelia has been going absolutely great guns, and I popped outside at lunchtime to find five bees happily lapping pollen & nectar from this single container alone.
Elsewhere in the garden there were another 6 or 7 bees and two small white butterflies. This has made my day!

Is there an entomologist on the line? I have noticed at least 3 different bumble bees with this strange pale mark on the back (it's difficult to see clearly because they're never still).
I *think* it might be a kind of mite (varroa?) , they clearly feel it because I could see all the bees were stroking it occasionally with a leg, but they still continued flying and feeding. This was the best of about a hundred photos I tried to take with my phone!
Any clues what it is? @… #bumblebee #bees #mites #Mitestodon

My fair city of Roanoke attained “Bee City USA” status in 2022, which aims to “promote healthy, sustainable habitats for bees and other pollinators, responsible for the reproduction of nearly 90% of the world’s flowering plant species and one in every three bites of food we eat.”
Last night, a couple of garden clubs teamed up with the city to screen a new PBS Nature documentary, “My Garden of a Thousand Bees”.

Bees are collapsing in the U.S.
A key to their secrets might vanish.
The Bee Lab’s potential closure comes at a tough time for bees.
Droege studies native bees,
the types of pollinators that only live in the wild,
as opposed to honeybees,
which are farmed and bred for profit.
Entomologists stress that honeybees and native bees are different —
sort of like farmed chickens and wild birds.
But they can be exposed to the same threats,
As someone who is afraid of bees, this sounds like my worst nightmare.

Went for a wander through the woods and heathland around Eyeworth pond in the New Forest yesterday. Even at 10 in the morning the birdsong was stunning: mostly song thrush, wren, blackcap, chaffinch. A single common redstart was my 1st of the year (male, singing), and at least 2 cuckoos, 1 seen in flight. Also 2 common lizards darted away into the bracken. Crab apples in bloom and alive with droning bees.
