Ireland officially coal free thanks to renewables, not LNG.

“A cautionary history: In 1999, the US coal industry claimed that information technology would need half the nation’s electricity by 2020, so a strong economy required far more coal-fired power stations. Such claims were spectacularly wrong but widely believed, even by top officials. Hundreds of unneeded power plants were built, hurting investors. Despite that costly lesson, similar dynamics are now unfolding again.”

The FT has consistently excellent climate coverage. This one is a bit of a depressing read, but also enlightening.
It's quite clear that the vast majority of growth in coal use is in Asia, mostly China and India, and it more than offsets the shrinking use of coal in Europe and the Americas.
My great grandfather died after a coal mining accident, my kids don't even really know what coal is. I have to hope that the trajectory away from coal will be accelerated in Asia compared to Europe.

In this book, Theoharis introduces us to the people leading the movement to end poverty, including:
multiracial groups of homeless people rising up from the streets and seizing empty, federally-owned homes;
mothers on welfare shutting down entire city blocks and going toe-to-toe with some of the most powerful people in the country;
farmworkers busting modern-day slave rings and winning living wages from multinational fast-food companies; and
coal miners, veterans,…
If we must grind up human flesh and bones in the industrial machine that we call modern America, then, before God, I assert that those who consume the coal and you and I who benefit from that service, because we live in comfort, we owe cutsey little corporate memphis instagram shoutouts to those men first and we owe nothing to their families if they die

It's funny how these old closed down coal power plants are coming back online since PJM won't allow crypto mining onto the electric grid. Solar farms are popping up all over (confused because they could do so much better in other places than where it's cloudier than Seattle), but they aren't allowed to connect because a national company forgot to obtain a permit by some hillbilly township with a population of 3.
"But West Virginia’s new law is unusual. Boasting the “least restrictive regulatory environment in the nation,” it prohibits local officials from having any input into where off-grid data centers go. This provision appears to be a nationwide first and is angering mayors and commissioners statewide."

Henry Clay Frick was a union buster
In 1892, he hired hundreds of Pinkerton detectives
— a private army of thugs with guns
— to quell a strike against a Pennsylvania steel mill.
Ten men were killed, dozens injured, and the situation became so inflamed that the state militia was called in to break the workers’ resistance.

This is at times more of a New York story than a Pizza story but still it is quite fun to listen to. Dan Pashman of The Sporkful talks to Patsy and Carol Grimaldi. Though I have to say my chin dropped somewhat when I understood that this legend of New York Pizza is cooked in a coal oven.

It's incredible that the Alberta Premier continues to claim a pipeline to the Northwest (Prince Rupert) is possible. Premier Eby was not there because he was in the middle of a pre-planned trip to Asia (Japan, South Korea, Malaysia). And he said today there won't be any reconsideration of another oil pipeline, "decarbonzed" or not. And Japan has no interest in heavy oil anyway.
"But Eby continued to pour cold water on other premiers' talk of building another oil pipeline across B.C. to the coast, saying there is already the taxpayer-owned Trans Mountain Pipeline, which is not being used to full capacity.
He added that the Japanese don't want heavy oil and thermal coal. And he has not altered his stance against lifting the heavy oil tanker ban on B.C.'s North Coast.”
