When I was a kid, I had a couple well-loved issues of G.I. Joe Special Missions, and this art from the cover of one of them was my absolute favorite. And I ran across it the other day again, and it still strikes me as extremely badass, even now. Just something about Snake Eyes scaling a wall in moonlight.

I see that with a lot of criticism of generative "AI"—people state that obviously it's completely unreliable and untrustworthy for _their domain of expertise_ but they'll somehow gladly use it for other stuff.
I believe this cognitive dissonance has to do with how the chatbots pretend to be humans and trick us to assume agency when there is none.
Anyway, as I said otherwise it's great, you should read it: https://theoatmeal.com/comics/ai_art

Day 23: Thi Bui
Indirect CW: parental neglect, war, intergenerational trauma
Bui is the author of "The Best We Could Do", a graphic memoir which explores her relationship with her parents and unpacks some of the intergenerational trauma coming out of the Vietnam War. It has a lot of wisdom to offer about both dealing with troubled parents as a 1.5th-generation immigrant, and it delves deeply into her parents' histories in Vietnam and the complexities of the situation there both in the north and in the south. It's beautifully illustrated and very nicely plotted together given all the disparate threads it is working with.
I haven't read any of Bui's other work, but it looks like she's published a picture book for kids as well as a series of short comics during the pandemic. Besides Oseman who also writes non-illustrated fiction and the two manga artists Ice mentioned, Bui is the first graphic novel author I've included here, but I've actually got quite a few of them in my longer list, one of whom may make it into the 30 I'll include in this thread. These days I'm reading a bunch of graphic novels since they're easy to get through, and the variety of stories and perspectives in that space is wonderful these days, with a huge array of indie stuff that probably never would have gotten off the ground in traditional publishing/comics spaces.

Been reading some of the Buffy The Vampire Slayer comic-books, set after the TV shows ended.
It's a very different world with Buffy and Xander being commanders of a whole slayer army with seemingly massive resources, from a castle being attacked by various supernatural forces.
Very different pacing from the TV show too.
You know that episode of Angel where Spike and Angel are running around in Italy chasing after Buffy who now dates The Immortal?
Turns out it wasn't Buffy at all, but one of her decoys that have been deployed around the world. Andrew thought it would be funny to troll the two vampires by pretending she was dating The Immortal.
The artwork is all great, but sometimes a little rough and I find it challenging since I don't always recognize who is supposed to be who, especially as the artists and styles switch from book to book.
Some of the mini stories feel like just pulling the TV show characters back for no good reason.
I hear rumors of a new Buffy TV show starring SMG with no involvement from Joss, and wonder if it'll assume these stories of visiting the future or fighting with an army from a castle base will be retconned out entirely?
It's an entertaining read and nice to visit those characters again, but doesn't feel much like the TV show because it's such a different setting and Buffy is very different as a commander than a school girl.

Just finished "Valor", edited by Isabelle Melançon and Megan Lavey-Heaton. It's a collection of re-told fairy tales with female protagonists and includes a mix of comics and written stories. Lots of great stuff, even if my distaste for monarchy soured it a bit for me (not all of the heroines are princesses, at least). Has a lot of cool queer romance in it.
I think I liked "The Steadfast Tin Automation", "Black Bull", and "Eggchild" best overall.

Got to the end of it all. Cried a few times, laughed a few times, enjoyed it all.
Angel is at it worst in Season Four and possibly it's best in Season Five when they've all mystically forgotten about Season Four and turned more ambiguously evil.
Strange to bring Spike back for that season of Angel after he died so gloriously at the end of Buffy. That could be what made the fifth year the best one though.
Doubt it's possible to watch those 250 episodes much quicker without being actually unemployed. Fitted the broken-wrist convalescence period quite nicely though.
So long Buffy. See you again next decade maybe. Got a real life to get back to.
Might read some of the comics though.
