As soon as you saw the name 'Tony Blair' on it you knew it would be as corrupt and abusive as fuck. And of course you were right.
My heart bleeds for #Gaza. This 'peace plan' is an epic, dystopian betrayal.

Dear people of Brazil, I'd like to apologise for our chancellor, a man of wealth and no taste with a virtually endless list of shortcomings.
I know it's frustrating having to deal with his BS, we have to do it every day over here. And consider also how good you have it: at least you can call him what he clearly, indulgently and unapologetically is without any fear of punishment.

“The Belem deal launches a voluntary initiative to speed up climate action to help nations meet their existing pledges to reduce emissions, and calls for rich nations to at least triple the amount of money they provide to help developing countries adapt to a warming world by 2035.”
This is suicide. We can’t adapt forever. Our civilization is based on 10,000 years of relatively stable climate. That climate is now changing in ways we can only guess at.
Yes we will have to adapt to what we have already done… but continuing to pump emissions into the atmosphere means we will continue to adapt to worse and worse and worse conditions until we can’t adapt anymore. No amount of money changes that.
When you can’t adapt… you die.
Canada and every provincial government is part of the problem. They are killing us now and killing our future.

And that's a wrap - the newly refreshed laptop has been handed over to teen with most of the packages functional. Thanks for following along on this @… installation journey with me and thanks to all #linux maintainers, forum contributors and FOSS advocates around keeping the system running.
👏 WE REALLY APPRECIATE YOU!👏
The final judgement won't be clear until Monday when the first log in at school happens but hopefully it will be successful, or the IT support is going to have to deal with some very salty comments (from me).

To be fair, if you costed out hardware 9 months ago, you probably couldn't account for changes to technology prices influenced by a) AI companies b) US policies. The price of RAM alone will force adjustments.

Day 24: Yvonne Adhiambra Owuor
Owuor wrote "Dust", a novel that follows a scattered family's struggles with intergenerational trauma through a vivid tapestry of Kenyan history. Not only is it full of carefully rendered complex characters who both deal with their own issues and who are entangled in larger threads, but it also depicts a series of deeply personal reactions to and interactions with historical moments that give a gestalt sense of the painful history of Kenya both during and after the colonial era.
It's a gripping read despite not having a traditional suspense structure, where in the last third of the book every chapter seems to be tying up one more loose thread you had almost forgotten about, only to leave a little more still to discover, right up to the end. Owuor's skill at constructing such a detailed and complex plot and especially in navigating it to a satisfying conclusion is impressive, and her depictions of human foibles and struggles in the face of grief and not-wanting-to-know are relatable.

«Milei has dashed his ship of state against the rocks, quite simply, because he followed the cracked compass called libertarianism. Libertarianism doesn’t work. Its core assumptions aren’t true. It’s the intellectual equivalent of huffing paint. But the pro-capitalist press outside #Argentina, for their part, ignored Milei’s obvious flaws and hyped him up because they wanted him to be the real deal.»

Silksong is the best game I’ve played in years. I would probably say in decades if it weren't for Outer Wilds, which skews the results. And no, it’s not too difficult. It _is_ difficult, but Team Cherry can’t change that. An easy mode would rob this game of its soul.
This game is almost a "Metroidbrainia", where the only way to progress is knowledge; knowledge of the enemies attack patterns and the reflexes to deal with them. If you could just hack and slash your way…

I know many academics, especially in these dark days, have to deal with worse, but it's obnoxious when the university takes a few years to slowly smother the cost-sharing program that you wrote into your successful grant application. Where I once had the money to hire the undergrad RAs the project needs, I now have enough for maybe a sixth of the planned hours.

So what is the deal with companies that send you extra products? I ordered two Awair Element air monitors in August and received them. Today, another box showed up with two more. No packing slip or order information. I haven't been billed for them (that I can find).
Do I just keep them? Seems weird. I'm guessing some sort of glitch caused them to reship the order.

PLEASE respond with your location and the name of the retailer, and the picture on the box if you live in a different area.

When #teaching #Rstats / #statistics courses, I (and several colleagues of mine) made the experience that it is indeed pretty hard for a lot of students to cope with the file system on their computer. They have questions like: How do I know the "path" of a file? How do I control in which directory something is saved? WHY DO I NEED THIS?!?
I don't want to make fun of these students because I know that this could be because operating systems are increasingly obscuring file/directory systems from their users.
But if I want to teach students to use a scripting/ #programming language independently, that's a real problem!
So my questions to you are: Do you have the same impression when teaching? And if so: How do you deal with this from a teaching perspective? To be honest, I don't want to use precious course time to teach the absolute basics of computers' file systems in the first session(s).

Content warning: #AskFedi - video private-sharing options / pricing

#AskFedi
1. Where is a reputable place with good privacy/security that you can upload a video, and share the link privately for other people to watch back?
2. What nowadays would be a good price per GB for that kind of storage, once you're past whatever limit they set on the amount you can store for free?
(I'm trying to work out whether a particular deal is good value or not, and what might be the alternatives.)
Thanks for any info!

Content warning: social facets of covid / Julia Doubleday's latest

Another stonker of a post from Julia Doubleday, who I'd say is possibly the leading writer of our time on the social aspects of covid & how we deal with it.
"The danger of COVID is its inherent danger, yes, but it’s also its relentlessness. It’s that when you get away with your 5th infection it’s coming right back for you a 6th time. A 6th time in year 6? And you’re a 6-year-old child?"
"What interests me about the “the lion does not concern himself” meme is the cracks it puts in the central fiction of the lies being told about Long COVID since 2022."
