Alright so I don't know why I feel I have to justify it, but Avatar was absolutely staggering. Saw it in 3D on the biggest screen in my area, and it's fair to say I think I'll remember this experience forever.
You can quibble with the story or the cultural treatment, but it's a quantum leap in the cinematic experience. Easily among if not the best action adventure film ever made *in this form*.
Absolutely unique filmmaking. (1/4)

After a recent *terrible* first attempt at using matrix as communication platform for our rather big measurement campaign in summer, I just tried selfhosting Mattermost, and boy is it a smoother experience. It's as if it was made for team collaboration, funny eh 😅
Also my first time trying out nixos-containers, very nice to encapsulate or group services together independently of your host NixOS.

I assume it is time to learn how to file bugs for Apple. My recent experience synchronizing Apple Notes, Journal, Reminders, and now Calendar across devices seems to get worse.
I could imagine some extra complexity handling Notes and Journal.
I cannot imagine how Apple hasn’t figured out a fast, reliable, and consistent sync for Reminders and Calendar.
It’s an extremely frustrating experience. I am wondering why there isn’t an AppleSynchGate yet.

Just saw a friend who found out they couldn’t be followed by one of their friends because (unbeknownst to both parties) the moderators of their friend’s instance had defederated from their own instance. All of this, for people who barely know what any of these terms mean. Did you know it's possible for two lines to appear to diverge in a 2D perspective view, but actually converge in 3D? Kind of the opposite of parallel lines in 3D converging in 2D.
I discovered this while trying to implement a clipping algorithm. At first I didn't believe it was possible, it felt so foreign to everyday experience. It actually happens whenever two lines converge behind the center of projection, but we rarely see that IRL.

I'm late to this conversation and then I had to read through the responses to see what I could add. Most of the points, good and bad, are contained in the replies. So I tried to apply an analogy using the experience of similar but different events.
The difference between having an account on social media platforms from the tech bros (X, BlueSky, Threads) versus participating on Mastodon is like two different types of cocktail parties. One is closer to a corporate event like those held at industry conferences. The other is a neighborhood get-together at someone's house.

Curious, did anyone experience @… down?
FPS is the biggest available channel that I'm aware of to funnel Academi into ICE/CBP enforcement operations. The point of using FPS to support ICE agents is that FPS is stocked full of troops from EriK Prince's private army (now called "Academi" but formerly called "Blackwater"). This means that carrying out ethnic cleansing can dump money directly into the pockets of America's version of the Wagner Group (side from, of course GEO Group).
The Erik Prince angle also means that there can be an alternative chain of command that exists outside of official channels. ICE is already bad enough, but similar people have worked as mercenaries for a long time. Having an established chain of command over armed occupiers, one based entirely on economic incentives, one that can't be legally monitored or audited, one that's completely outside of the government, should be especially worrying.
I don't believe we've ever seen a clear explanation of who was kidnaping people off the streets, but I know that Academi had a contract (I believe with FPS) in Portland at the time. We also don't know who is on the ground in US cities right now, because they're wearing masks.
The bit reason J6 didn't go as planned is that Erik Prince wasn't behind it. Now there are troops with experience occupying American cities who can be called directly via Erik when Trump wants to make sure he doesn't lose again. And Erik won't back out at the last minute this time, because he's already seen that there will be no consequences for participating in a coup... if the time comes.
