We need to find some new terms to describe the rest of us mere mortals
then.

I'm looking for the best places in the world to find mud pots. I'm disappointed that no one made a list.
So far, I have:
★ Yellowstone (WY, USA)
★ Lassen Volcanic National Park (northern CA, USA, near Redding)
★ Salton Sea (southern CA, USA, near San Diego)
★ possibly southern Utah? (Roosevelt Hot Springs...?) — unclear if visitable/safe/etc
Fumaroles are a little easier to find:
★ all the locations above, of course
★ Namafjall Geothermal Are…
When I was a little one, I was told that I ought to follow the path set for me, and I'll eventually find happiness there. It's just around the corner, just walk forward and don't stray. So I ran ahead, only to discover another segment of the same road, even more bleak than the previous one. And I heard again: just a little more. Finally, I realized that this road only leads to my grave, and there's no reason to hurry; and the only way to find happiness, is to actually stray from it.

When writing a parser for a new (programming) language and you find yourself doing a lot of lookahead, and making design compromises to avoid that.. I wonder what a language would end up like if you parsed it backwards from the start? Like just reversed the code as a string. Would the language end up more humane? I guess this is already a thing but don't know the search term..
Can an octopus learn to play a piano? This guy, Mattias Krantz, tried to find out. He rescues a random octopus from a fish market and then tries to work out how to teach it to play. Summary of the recent optimization work in ngscopeclient (not counting core/driver stuff, just filters)
I'm now making a pass through the entire filter library in alphabetical order removing some deprecated APIs, adding error reporting, and doing trivial GPU optimizations where I find them but not spending more than a few hours on a filter unless it's something like the CDR or eye that is really critical.
None of these are what I would consider "done". I'm f…

Gifts to the US President are generally considered to be the property of the United States rather than of the president as a person or the president as an office.
So it seems to me that the US National Archives is now the proud owner of a the physical object of a Nobel Peace Prize.

"Microsoft was an early investor in many of the latest AI companies. It ended up with a serious stake in OpenAI and benefited from early access to its models, creating Bing Chat and Copilot when Google, Meta, and Anthropic were just getting started. But now its momentum has stalled, and like everyone else, it's not making much money from its AI products. That's because no one is buying them, and that is because very few people actually find them useful, The Information reports."

A lot of arguments in community chats broke out about who was supposed to be where, about what community was asking for people to show up or steer clear, about age-old militant vs. pacifist debates that have basically been stuck on loop since the 1960s (and are, IMO, just •incredibly• boring at this point, sorry).
But that’s organizing. It’s messy. People argue. People find consensus. People chaotically self-organize despite lack of consensus. People make good things happen.
And in the end, the people who believe in inclusion and reaching across differences and •building• community instead of destroying it — they have an intrinsic advantage.

A team of scientists discovered a hidden antibiotic 100 times stronger than existing drugs against deadly superbugs like MRSA.
The molecule had been overlooked for decades in a familiar bacterium.
It shows no signs of resistance so far, offering hope in the fight against drug-resistant infections and paving the way for new approaches to antibiotic discovery.
Today we're gonna find out together how well a 30-year old lithum-ion battery charges.
This is a Hitachi battery that doesn’t have any direct modern replacement; it’s almost identical to a Sony NP-FM50 but ever so slightly thinner so the Sony batteries just barely don’t fit into the Hitachi camera this is for.
I’ll probably fry to modify a 3rd-party replacement for the Sony batteries by sanding it down, needs to be shaved off by like <1mm.
We desperately need to figure out how to flip this: how to lift up the creators of wonderful things, instead of rewarding whoever can acquire power over their creations.
I don’t think we know how to do this. There’s a vast spectrum of schemes for fixing this, ranging from capitalist versions of “intellectual property” to Marxist “just end capitalism” notions to various versions of “easy, society should just be different.” I find them all lacking, both in theory and in practice. This is a problem that’s existed for millennia, not decades, and I’m not convinced we have a clear solution.

For those of you curious - the Nazis downtown are getting absolutely humiliated.
The big anti-Islam protest downtown currently consists of about 8 protesters and hundreds, maybe thousands, of counter protesters. The counter protesters are currently walking/pushing the protesters off of City Hall grounds. True Minnesota hospitality at its best.
Jake Lang [right-winger who organized the event] and a handful of other racists/RW propagandists are surrounded by about 50 cameras and some antifascists chanting him down. A banner the group arrived with has been broken.
Currently has only about 5 supporters, and is being drowned out by counter protesters
The group led by Jake Lang tried to get inside Minneapolis City Hall, but the building is closed, as it is every Saturday.

So I've a medical thing that I need to buy once a month on Amazon and they cancelled my subscription delivery for it last time (but not the subscription itself), without telling me.
I tried to just order it for one time delivery, but the delivery date was a month out and they immediately cancelled my order.
My wife told me to use my developer brain—and yes, imagining a bug with some row in a database being in a fugue state, the exactly a month out delivery date being the biggest hint to something going into a default state when a calculation fails.
So I removed the subscription to the item (they make it hard to find where to do this).
Bingo: I can now order immediately for delivery in two days and for working subscrpition delivery.
The joy and promise of the Internet is that marginal and marginalized people can find each other
and form communities.
If you're the only goth klezmer fan in Toad Suck, Arkansas, you can find others.
If you're het up about a neglected social issue, you can find others.
The trouble is a lot of communities used to be marginalized for extremely good reasons,
and it probably would have been better if they stayed that way.

This poses a vexing problem for resistance: a direct force-on-force assault against ICE by small groups of citizens is foolish…but holding signs and waiting for the next election sure as hell ain’t gonna cut it either.
We have to find ways to fight back on the streets — but it has to look good on TikTok and on the news and to members of Congress and judges and the gaze of the whole world. Cameras and whistles are a start, but it can’t stop there. All this is not just going away on its own.

Consequently, the team had only to drill about 300-600 feet to find the oldest ice.
