probably 45 years ago I was going down into Mexico to camp for a week with three friends, one of them was the brother of a friend of mine who was in charge of music. He forgot all the music except for one Grateful Dead eight track tape that he just left on repeat and that was the first and last time I ever listened to the grateful dead.

when i kvetch about streaming services being an insult to musicians by not including proper credits, i wasn't suggesting that they should take the auxiliary musician names from "aoxomoxoa," add them to "europe '72" & misspell them. still not sure how "merle" saunders got on there.

Just finished "Thief of the Heights" written by Son M. and illustrated by Robin Yao. It's a very cool graphic novel about the illusions of meritocracy and loyalty to one's roots, with an interesting setting and better politics than most stuff out there, even if the plotting is a little rough and perhaps a bit too straightforward. The neat ending and reliance on heroism are themes I don't love in these kinds of tales, but I'm grateful for more stories in this category to exist in the first place, so I can't complain too much.
It's got disability, queer, and POC representation and some of that is #OwnVoices, which is cool, although those dimensions of the work aren't its focus.

I had a plumber in my house today to replace stuck 20 year old saddle valve for fridge with a tee and standard valve. A few minutes in, he found me & informed me the saddle valve was actually on the hot pipe. He asked if I was OK with the extra work to switch to the cold pipe. I was definitely OK with this!

Today, my trusted wristwatch fell face down on a tiled floor. As a result, all twelve marker lines broke off and are now changing place with my every movement. At first, I was angry and sad. But then I noticed: What a perfect metaphor for life! How fragile life is. How sudden our illusion of safety can be broken. And also, how resilient life is. The watch is still working perfectly. Now, whenever I check the time, I am reminded to be grateful for being alive.

2/2 I continued blogging Alberniweather and on FB and Twitter but I gradually removed my personal self from Facebook and eventually during the Pandemic, I decided the Facebook environment was just too toxic even for weather stuff and I shut down my page and left Facebook completely.
The impact on traffic to Alberniweather.ca and its prominence in the community was, and still is, significant.
I have diehard followers, many who have become friends over the years, I still get the odd call from media, or even the public about random weather things.
I have good connections with a few folks at Environment Canada (though their staff have become thinner and more transient :(
and major events still get spikes of local traffic but I since about 2022, and after I removed myself from Twitter that year, I don’t blog nearly as much. I would do a few posts in a week, and then go months without posting. I just got out of the habit I guess.
But I am still interested in the weather. I still feel like Alberniweather is a useful service for people in my community. I still feel a willing obligation to inform people about the weather and I believe I am trusted to do so by the public and local leaders. I’ve never made any money at it, I sold ad space on the website for a few years but it wasn’t worth the hassle and I didn’t feel comfortable taking the money when I was councillor. I have had some generous spontaneous donations at times.
But mainly I do it because it’s interesting, and I hope it is useful for people especially when people are looking for information during a major event.
The highest traffic I have ever had on Alberniweather pre-FB exit was the local Dog Mountain forest fire in 2015.

Large media orgs have mostly given up on this.
