If you're unclear on why you have to load the video before you can play it it's because the first load only loads the image, title and channel name to make the page itself load much faster.

The person viewing is then allowed to make a more considered choice before activating the video. Perhaps you want to open the link an incognito window instead for example.

One great bonus to this embed is that it shows way less ads, if any.

Day 22: Yuki Urushibara
I've got a few more mangaka left on my short list, and might very well get to at least one more, but Urushibara is the author of Mushishi and anyone who knows either the manga or anime understands immediately why she appears here.
Mushishi is a "seinen" anime, which means it's written for adults, not children or teenagers (although it's very accessible for all ages). It deals with a vast array of life's circumstances through the lens of a traveling mushi expert and the various whimsical supernatural creatures he is called on to deal with. He's not an exorcist though, instead understanding that humans must live in harmony with the mushi, and working like an ecologist to sort things out. As is probably obvious, Urushibara is an incredible world-builder; she's also a top-notch artist and above all, her stories are overflowing with kindness, humanity, and respect for the natural world.
Besides Mushishi, I've read "Suiiki", and it's one of the few manga I stumbled through in the original Japanese, which says a lot given my limited reading vocabulary (and the fact that it doesn't include rubi). It weaves the supernatural into a story of childhood innocence and curiosity in a lovely way.
Much like Shirahama who I mentioned earlier, Urushibara's stories are full of gentle wisdom for all ages, but Urushibara's work is quieter and less dramatic, with an adult main character confident in his expertise instead of a young-and-learning protagonist.

Content warning: "long" rant about american sci-fi tv series and "neuro-archy"

I have the distinct impression that we could use most American "sci-fi" TV series (which seem to have a kink for post-apocalyptical scenographies) as a diagnostic tool for the autism spectrum.
For a moment, let's leave aside the tons of right-wing propaganda "hidden" in plain sight, and their excessive reliance on boring & worn out tropes (religious & cultish bullshit, irrational lack of communication & excess of anti-social behaviour, all vs all, ultra-low-iq characters*, psychotic & irrationally treacherous characters*, ultra-inconsistent character development used to justify "unexpected" plot twists, rampant anti-intellectualism...).
What could be used as a diagnosis tool is the incredible amount of strong inconsistencies that we can find in them**. It throws me out of the story every single time; and I suspect that it takes a certain kind of "uncommon personality" to feel that way about it, because otherwise these series wouldn't be so popular without real widespread criticism beyond cliches like "too slow", "it loses steam towards the end of the season", etc.
Many of those plots start in a gold mine of potentially powerful ideas... yet they consistently provide us with dirt & clay instead, while side-lining the "good stuff" as if it was too complicated for the populace.
Do you feel strongly about it? Do you feel like you can't verbalize it without being criticised as "too negative", or "too picky", or an "unbearable snob"? Do you wonder why it seems like nobody around shares your discomfort with these stories?
* : I feel this is a bit like the chicken & egg problem. Has the media conditioned part of American society to behave like dumb psychopaths as if it was something "natural", or is the media reflecting what was already there? Also, could we use other societies as models for these stories... just for a change? Please?
** : Just a tiny example: a "brilliant" engineer who builds a bridge out of fence parts and who doesn't bother to perform the most basic tests before trying it in a real setting and suffer the consequences: the bridge failing and her falling into the void. Bonus points for anyone who knows what I'm talking about.

Instead of reading your pitch a hundred times so you can edit it for time, use ElevenLabs.
1. Create an account
2. Find a voice that matches your own cadence
3. Paste your script and have it generate the pitch
You'll immediately see how long the audio file is and can adjust your script for length.

One thing we keep getting wrong: Privacy is a *human* right. Not a corporate right. Not a government right.
Corporations and governments, tools that – in theory at least – exist to serve the people, must be transparent and accountable.
Instead, today, we have the opposite: We give corporations and governments privacy and expect absolute transparency from everyday people. That’s broth for fascism.

This cult says: don't mind that the systems are broken. Don't try and fix them. You can just do things, using you ubermensch will.
AI has plugged into this cult to promise 10x-ing your action. But instead your will becomes subservient to the machine.
Doing what is easiest is only going to make things worse. The only helpful course of action is to fix the system.

Bits 5:0 are straightforward, they're one-hot pairs (one bit set for logic 0, the other for logic 1) counting in what looks to be plain binary.
But the other half are a much stranger sequence. Bits 7:6 are one hot and do what I'd expect for the first half, but then are constant 1/0 for the second half (I would expect 7:0 to be 0/1 instead).
And then bits 11:8 seem to be one-hot within the entire…

You could change the library poster images in #Jellyfin for #Roku to be thumb images instead of posters.

Hello there! Sorry I’ve been dumping annoying news things the last while here instead of chit chatting.
I really like it here and enjoy it, perhaps, most of any online text box.
But, regrettably, circumstances have conspired to require me to make a living. This takes up an inordinate amount of time. So, the best I have been able to manage is to drop newsy bits or Gist links.
I hope, like all of my vintage, that next month will quieten down a bit.

Things that Google Assistant (opted out of AI) has added to our grocery list recently:
★ hi (instead of hydrocortisone cream)
★ lunch (instead of lunch meat)
★ aqua 4 (instead of aquaphor)
All things that have been easily understood for ten years by Google Assistant but now, for mysterious reasons, is no longer working consistently

Following public outcry,
the U.S. Department of Education has restored funding for students who have both hearing and vision loss,
about a month after cutting it.
But rather than sending the money directly to the four programs that are part of a national network helping students who are deaf and blind, a condition known as deafblindness,
the department has instead rerouted the grants to a different organization
The Trump administration targeted the programs in …

Maybe the best way to stop Generative AI, is simply to abandon services and software that include, support and encourage it. Seek other options... always pick those that support organic humans instead.

Today I saw a 14R miss the green light on Mission at 24th St, despite the green being extended for the bus. It was stuck behind a long line of drivers illegally going straight. This is supposed to be a right turn only except Muni. Scofflaw driving is defeating transit priority on Mission Street. #sfpol

Two cars in the red, bus-only lane that goes straight, instead of the right-turn only lane that is the only lane legal for them to use. A sign says right turn only, except trucks, buses, taxis and bicycles. Up ahead you can see a line of cars that have just made the same illegal move, backed up through the intersection.
A picture facing the other direction. The same white SUV is visible as in the first picture, and a 14R Mission Rapid bus to Ferry Plaza is behind it.

It has very clear institutional reasons to do so.
