It's kinda a wild fact that there are these Internet Protocols that are used extremely widely, but knowledge how they work is scarce.
For reasons, I just wondered a few things about OCSP. That's part of TLS, and, idk, most people would probably attribute "knowledge of TLS" to me.
Yet... I kinda know what OCSP does, but... I don't really know how the protocol works.
And if I google for something like "easy explanation of OCSP", I don't find a…

I think when the web took off it felt like “Hey, this is an amazing library of information and knowledge!” but then people found ways to make money from it, which is very much not like a library.
Pre-web if you saw a library and thought “Hey, that’s a great way to make money!” you were either a fool or someone with a thirst for knowledge.

At a time of simultaneous climate and biodiversity crises, protecting land and sea is key for conservation.
However, for protected areas to function as effective engines of knowledge generation, they must adapt to rapid changes and be adequately equipped to monitor environmental change both as individual sites and as nodes in a larger knowledge network.

Just had another one of those "OMG ChatGPT can do that?" moments.
We're quickly moving past knowledge work, and past knowledge itself. The only frontier after this will be human attention.
The rub is... As one who competes in the attention economy, let me tell you: Every day, there is less of it to compete for, and more competitors. And now AI can blow that out to infinity.
Anyone who 'makes content' is now up against infinite competitors. And they …

The current AI models let you easily experiment with application ideas like never before. For experimentation, quickly trying out ideas, they are great. That is something completely different from serious/professional use I am fully aware. Still your creativity is now the limit, not your knowledge of python, jscript etc and that is fascinating .

It’s a pilot module for a planned online certificate on generative AI; would count as credit toward that graduate credential. Open to anyone with a BA.

The Zeroing of Knowledge: When Everything Is Known, What Remains Worth Learning?
Knowledge used to be expensive. It cost years of apprenticeship, tuition in the tens of thousands, decades of practice, and, more than anything, the brutal currency of time. A physician spent twelve years beyond high school before being trusted to cut into a human body. A lawyer spent seven years and a bar exam before being permitted to argue before a judge.

These proposals were common knowledge in Bulgaria. I remember the oldtimers being disgusted how desperately in love was the regime with the Soviets, while the Bulgarian economy had been crashing constantly way into the 1980s (which was a not that common knowledge because it was kept in secret from the population that didn't perish in prisons and work camps). Fully incompetent, servile scum in full power for 45 years straight.

Our first winter in Barrie has been eventful as we've now gone 12 days with 2cm or more snow accumulation per day, and had a streak broken yesterday of 10 straight days of heavy snow / snow squall warnings.
According to local media the 2025 November/December snowfall amount is the highest in 25 years. Based on my substantial lack of meteorological knowledge I am predicting less snow than normal for the rest of the winter. The lakes are cooling quickly and icing over due to the colder than normal temperatures. That should reduce the lake effect snow squalls coming off of Georgian Bay. "A package’s value isn’t primarily its implementation code. Anyone can rewrite curl in Rust in a weekend, as Daniel Stenberg has heard many times. What they can’t rewrite is the twenty years of bug reports, the weird edge cases someone hit in production and took the time to fix, the arguments in issue threads that eventually settled on the right behavior. That knowledge is spread across the package’s history and it grew organically. No prompt captures it."

…sometimes there’s •not• a clear standard way. Sometimes you need flexibility. For example, a lot of what makes UI programming hard is layout: you have to make your own very specific application look good on a variety of devices and screens, which means coming up with an •algorithm• for adjusting your design for all those different contexts.
That’s an intrinsically hard problem that requires design chops and nuance and contextual knowledge. Attempts to abstract the decisions out of that problem have been stubbornly unsuccessful. (How many layout engines are out there now?)
