Here’s the “refuge permit” designed as window dressing to make liberals feel ok about this. Notice to get one, you have to “agree to accept offer of… interim… housing,” ie agree to be displaced a little later anyway. 💩

Many people have this sense that the price of books is primarily linked to the cost of materials, manufacture, & distribution. But the majority of the cost of publishing books are in the labor leading up to the 1st copy: editorial & editorial production work, before any reproduction in whatever format. Addition labor happens later, for marketing. When you buy a book, you’re mainly paying for these kinds of labor.

i was put in charge of three grandchildren for a few hours yesterday so we headed straight to ben & jerry's to split a milkshake, then explored the state theater (and even sneaked into a movie but later got thrown out for horsing around on the escalator), then i gave a nickel tour of angell/mason/haven halls, then they chased squirrels on the diag which took longer than you might think, then we looked in all the windows in nickels arcade. it all went slowly and well.

A four-, five-, and a six-year old are seated in a booth with a bright orange tabletop in front of a purple each with a small cup containing vanilla milkshake. They're eating with straws and spoons. So far, it is not a messy disaster.

This is a cheerful photo of three children enjoying milkshakes at a restaurant booth. The setting is a classic ice cream parlor with its distinctive blue and yellow booth seating and black-and-white checkered floor.

The children are seated around a bright orange…
This photo shows three children sitting together on a wooden bench in a public building. The setting has large windows in the background showing green grass and trees outside, with some chairs and bicycles visible through the glass.

On the left is a girl with shoulder-length blonde wavy hair wearing a light pink/lavender t-shirt with a sparkly design paired with light blue shorts and pink Crocs-style shoes. In the middle is a girl with her hair in small buns or pigtails, wearing a light blue d…
This photo shows the Michigan diag, a public green space with a concrete sidewalk running along the right side. The area features a well-maintained grassy lawn with several young trees planted throughout, each surrounded by dark mulch circles. The trees appear to be newly planted or relatively young.

In the background, there are mature, established trees providing a canopy of green foliage. White banners or flags can be seen hanging from poles, though the text on them isn't clearly visible. Th…

Despite the obnoxious footers you sometimes see on email written by the silly, no one can obligate you to protect data that they sent to you without some sort of contract. Maybe if you’re an employee, you have made an explicit agreement to protect your employer’s data. Maybe there is an implied agreement to protect information of your employer’s business partners. But there is NO blanket duty of care for email sent to you any more than there is for snail mail.

Forty years ago I moved to Scotland and tried to read the classic “A Scots Quair” by Lewis Grassic Gibbon. It’s written in a variant of Scots that aimed to be accessible to English readers. I had the Scots dictionary by my side and was looking up words constantly until I gave up. A few years later (with some more experience of hearing Scots spoken) I read it without the dictionary and, while I was occasionally guessing at words from context, I went with the flow and loved it.

So there's this new "#eDoręczenia" (~ "eDelivery") system that's supposed to replace the previous "ePUAP" system for exchanging signed messages between citizens and offices. I've finally had the opportunity of testing it today, and I have to say, it's magic.
So I wrote the message, attached the ~300 KiB attachment and clicked "Send". Now a status bar appeared on top, saying (in translation):
> Sending message, it can take up to 20 minutes!
Roughly two minutes later the status bar disappeared and I got a blank new message form. So I go into "sent", nothing there. I go into "drafts", there's my message, apparently listed with "delivery data". I click it, click "send" again — the same bar appears, but after a few seconds I'm back to the list. I click "sent", it's finally sent. Magic!

I'm impressed with designers that create flat packed furniture. Crafting a jigsaw puzzle of wood and hardware that assembles into fashionable and sturdy furniture ranks right up there with aerospace engineering.
And then there's this. A shoe cabinet that my wife ordered to fit in our sunroom to hide our hideous footwear that we slip on when we go in the backyard. It came in 18 pieces, plus 8 separate tiny bags of hardware and minimal instructions. Two hours of assembly later, it's virtually the same size in volume as the shipping carton it arrived in. I know there are reasons why it's not shipped complete, but it's still a little irritating.

I... got scammed.
By firstpressgames.com .
I wanted to buy a birthday present, and I didn't expect this company to be so problematic.
One month later without getting anything from them, nor responses to my messages... and it crosses my mind that I should have checked online reviews for that e-commerce business before buying anything... and there you go: 1.4 stars out of 5 (no one gave more than 2 stars).
The few reviews that gave 2 stars are something like this, YEARS of delay: gamepad.club/@vny/110691909210
All of the public reviews use the word scam in one or another language, no exceptions.
Then I checked their social accounts, and... of course, they blocked comments everywhere, to avoid the possibility of angry people popping up and pointing to their shady behavior.

Built a NAS recently to act as a gateway/NFS storage for a couple proxmox nodes for a small business.
The proxmox nodes are stateless only ever storing VMs on the NFS share. The idea was 100% data redundancy, not so much uptime redundancy.
I'm already scheming to upgrade the link between the NAS and the proxmox nodes with at least a 10g SPF direct attach solution later. 2.5G is enough for now.

One of the problems with vibe coding is that the hardest part of software engineering is not writing the code, rather it's *choosing* what to code, and designing the system (and, later on, maintaining the code/operations/etc)
The barriers and investment cost to writing code is itself a *desirable* aspect of software engineering because it forces you to make careful, good choices before you invest in building something

It seems like, again, just following the plain logic of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence (which, again, I do not subscribe to), that every law passed under Trump, every supreme court justice appointment by Trump, every supreme court ruling by Trump appointed justices, all the illegal firing, etc, must all, necessarily, be null and void.
And if not following from the insurrection act, or from the oath of office, then following from the Declaration of Independence itself. The logic here being that a constitution is a contract between the people and their government, which the later upholds in order to maintain its legal status. The violation of said laws by the government violates "consent of the governed" (which, again, I have issues with the concept entirely but we're just going to ignore that) and therefore nullifies the authority of that government, granting " the right of the people to alter or to abolish it."
That seems a lot like the hard reset some folks have been looking for. Given that existing flaws allowed this state to be reached, it would also be necessary for the true authority to correct those mistakes before assuming authority that derives from these principles.
Now, personally, I don't subscribe to any of this logic but it's interesting to explore, as an outsider, where the logic goes.

Yesterday, I watched "The Match" (승부), a movie that is now available on streaming platforms after it ran in cinemas in March. It tells the story of two Korean Go players who were both considered best in the world at some point: Cho Hun-hyun and Lee Chang-ho, a master and a student who later overtook the master. Side note: Lee Chang-ho was later followed by Lee Sedol as the world's best player who was then followed by AlphaGo. 1/2

One thing Newsom has shown is key to effectively deal with Trump & the MAGA propaganda machine:
You must respond immediately & call out the lies.
You can’t wait until hours/days later, then answer in a press conference, statement, scripted speech.
All Dems should learn from it.

Tom Petty's 'Square One' was on The Bear in episode 8, I always forget how much I love that song. The things that guy could do with just a guitar and voice- damn. Magical. And then Strange Currencies later on in the episode. A lot of great and sometimes really unique musical choices on the show in general.

The Trump administration has shifted from bureaucratic threats to armed suppression of political opponents.
By beginning with vulnerable groups who have less legal standing and social capital to resist repression,
the Trump administration is making a strategic choice, hoping to provoke less public outcry

This is a textbook example of democratic backsliding, similar to what we have witnesse…
