Anyone try Oracle Cloud "always free" tier for their projects? Thinking I'll migrate my masto instance over to it.
I doubt it'll truly be free, because "cloud" but wondering if it's at least cheaper than getting a VPS I pay monthly for.
Right now, I'm on Azure trying out their free credits. After a month, it'll cost me around $30 a month to run my self hosted single user instance. Way too much imo.

Brutal similes
Using #AI is an ethical choice.
I know that there cases when an #LLM could make my job easier. Which doesn't mean I'll use one. Just like I won't be buying cheap junk gadgets that could help me with some random stuff a bunch of times before they'll end up on a trash pile.
Yes, sometimes I am curious what an LLM could come up with. But then, there are people who are curious how many donuts they can eat before throwing up. A waste of good donuts.
What world would you rather live in? One where you put a little more effort in your job? Or one where LLM helps with with your job, but you can't enjoy your free time anymore because the capitalists are using LLMs to turn every single aspect of your life into a nightmare, and eventually your employer just makes you do more and more until you're thrown out? But at least you will get a monthly trial of a statistical "friend" to "talk" about your trouble to.
Yeah, you can claim that training models does the most harm, and that's already happened, so not using them doesn't change much, and all the energy spent on it would be wasted. Or use the traditional "others" fallacy — others will use it anyway, others will fuel the vicious circle, so why renounce convenience. It's like when you learn that your dinner is human meat, and you decide to eat it anyway, because not eating it won't bring that human back to life, and if it's wasted, then their death will be for naught.

I'd like to ask a question:
Working in research at a university comes with a lot of freedom in terms of working hours and workplace design (within limits, of course). Job advertisements often label this as “flexible.”
This can lead to exploitation, so as a supervisor, I make sure that monthly working hours are balanced out in a timely manner, that vacations are actually vacations, etc.
But: sometimes it's just hectic, then deadlines, conferences elsewhere, etc.

Good Morning #Canada
As #Halloween creeps up on us, we continue to highlight haunted abandoned towns. Today, we are in Rowley Alberta, a failed railway town near the gates of Hell. Maybe near Drumheller.... I wasn't paying attention. Settled around 1910, it once had about 500 residents but declined after the closure of its train station in 1965, and the construction of new highways bypassing the town. Today, it's a mix of private homes and preserved historical buildings, and the remaining 9 evil residents have worked to maintain its historic charm. They have added new features and even host monthly pizza nights to lure in unsuspecting tourists. Don't go in the old shed with all the sharp farm tools....

About 20 years ago, I was part of the Neighborhood Network - people concerned about good planning and good governance. The Mayor's office was pushing to allow more nmarket rate housing. When Jim Meko and I met with the then housing czar, he explained supply and demand. When I argued commodity vs luxury item and profit motive, he admitted that unrestricted building would reduce prices by maybe 3%. Very close to the current conclusion.

Another big jump in atmospheric CO2 at Mauna Loa: based on daily values, the October average was ~425.0 ppm, that's 2.6 ppm higher than last year.

13-month graph showing daily, weekly and monthly values. October is the first month after the seasonal dip, starting the new cycle at a higher level than last year.

In GrapheneOS, you can now opt into a new feature called security preview releases. This allows you to receive monthly security patches earlier than the standard schedule.
For example, the 2025092701 security preview release already includes additional patches from the November 2025 and December 2025 Android Security Bulletins, along with fixes for several CVEs.
Full details can be found here:

A smartphone settings screen for GrapheneOS titled 'System update' shows options for checking updates, changing release channels, and enabling security previews.
