#infosec annoyance of the day - I use a tool for work that requires me to put in a rolling one-time code for 2fa, and doesn't show the code as I'm typing it.
That would be ok, except if I switch apps to copy the code so I can paste it in, it usually forces me to re-enter my username and password, then even though I'm in the 30 second validity window, it refuses the code.
So I have to wait till the 30 seconds roll over, copy the code, switch to the tool, re-enter my username/password, hope it doesn't take so long to negotiate with the back end that the code in my clipboard expires, then finally paste the code.
Conveniently I only have to do it multiple times a day, every work day.

Once I pulled my head out of my ass this wasn't horrible. Part 1 was straightforward, decided to do some set stuff and managed to get it right the first time. Part 2 made my brain hurt a bit because all of the ideas that came to me were very, very slow and memory intensive. Then decided to scrap it and just do what the directions told me to do: count the paths...so I replaced the dumb with a dictionary which was so much better as an idea.

I really hate to play the “age card,” folks, but back in my day (2023 and 2024), I distinctly recall that a president with apparent mental infirmities was nigh unto scandalous.
For a press so dedicated to sanewashing the Trump administration’s open sewer of corruption, the kid gloves treatment still seems the order of the day.

#AdventOfCode Day 6: Part 1 was easy, for part 2 it was obvious what to do (after I read the instructions a few times to figure out what is considered a cephalopod number), but it took me a while to properly rotate my arrays. At least I got to finally use `for my ($i, $val) (indexed @array) { .. }` (which I failed to use (properly) on day 3).

Dear Europe and others,
I've had a busy day.
I had work all day - as a hospice chaplain taking care of dying people.
This morning my mother went to the hospital for testing related to her dementia. Then, in the late afternoon she fell and had to go back for more testing. She's OK now.
And ICE shot a woman who did nothing wrong. And will probably get away free.
I'd love to protest in the streets but I'm just trying to live. I'll do what I can.
I’m seeing more comments to my blog from people asking for the latest support / bug / gap / etc for testing I’ve performed.
I write these posts so people can do it on their own.
I look forward to people commenting with their own (rigorous) testing results instead. Some day.
Beautiful night in the woods. It didn't rain at all and we woke up to an awesome sunrise instead of the pouring rain we usually get. I'm not used to packing up my shelter and having it be dry.
Should be a good day of training.

Totally normal problems.
So one day I had trouble zipping my winter jacket; around the final teeth, the zipper would stop catching. And when I tried again, I couldn't zip anything at all. Finally, at nth careful attempt it finally worked, and I had no more trouble that day. When I've turned, we looked at it, and decided that a loose thread must have gotten into it while zipping. Cut the thread off.
Next day, the zipper worked just fine in the morning. However, when I was about to leave the train, it suddenly stopped working. It seemed that I'm up for a cold day in unzipped jacket, but it finally caught a few minutes later, on the road. This time, I suspected the zipper. Tightened it, it started working again.
Today, I've tried zipping it three times to make sure it really works. And of course, as soon as I arrived at the destination, it refused to zip. I've tried again while walking, and it fell apart completely. Fortunately, the wind stopped blowing, and walking on snow was hard enough to jumpstart my metabolism fast. Finally, I've replaced the zipper and now everything works.
I wonder what tomorrow holds…
Monthly check-in. Not panicking yet as I have 11 more months and people fluctuate by a few pounds every day. I also have done nothing remotely serious about meeting my goal and in fact had several family celebrations in January that involved really good food. That’s what my friends Karen and Chris told me recently. She’s a retired teacher; he’s a retired firefighter. They are a Canadian couple from Alberta who, over the past few years, have travelled the world, spent time with their family, and helped over a thousand individuals and couples build an online business that removed financial anxiety from their lives.
How did they do this? They got involved in an online business a few years ago and helped others do the same. They had a mentor to guide them from day one. But on top of that they had access to and support of other experienced people on the team. They were able to take advantage of a huge library of training resources that showed them how to get started and keep going in an effective manner. And they had the flexibility to work on their new business based on their priorities and schedules.
The results speak for themselves.

Well, shit. Guess I picked a bad day to re-case my PC and upgrade the GPU. Everything went well until I tried to update the OS, which failed while tossing a Mesa dependency error. Dog hair will save us from the Terminator future depicted in T2: Judgment Day. My robo-vacuum seems incapable of dealing with my dogs' shedding.
I stayed up far too long tonight for this one, but it was fun. Saw that we were dealing with an absolute metric ton of ranges at the very beginning so my initial thought was to reduce/merge those ranges and that's what I spent most of my time on before even tackling part 1.
It paid off tremendously and made solving everything very, very easy. There's still the Nim version to write, but I'll handle that after I get some sleep.
Solution:
The rest of my family got (m)nexspike a month ago, but for various reasons I was delayed and was given spikevax the other day. I've spent most of the time since then sleeping, and i'm still so very annoyed they gave me the older, worse vaccine tech..

Hey... it's snowing again... what a surprise.
Our first winter in Barrie has been eventful as we've now gone 12 days with 2cm or more snow accumulation per day, and had a streak broken yesterday of 10 straight days of heavy snow / snow squall warnings.
According to local media the 2025 November/December snowfall amount is the highest in 25 years. Based on my substantial lack of meteorological knowledge I am predicting less snow than normal for the rest of the winter. The lakes are cooling quickly and icing over due to the colder than normal temperatures. That should reduce the lake effect snow squalls coming off of Georgian Bay. Ah, ein Paper der Art "Ich untersuche Generalthema X und verschwinde gleich im ersten Abschnitt im Dickicht eines peripher relevanten Chronologieproblems, aus dem ich nie wieder herausfinde". My day is made.
Living in a capitalist society makes me simultaneously hate and understand some things.
Back when the Sunday shopping ban was set in Poland by one of the right-wing parties (with some exceptions for petty capitalists, of course), I was outraged. Why are they forcing their religious customs on me?! But nowadays, I do realize that in a capitalist society, where employment laws are full of loopholes and employers explicitly punish employees for taking a day off, an obligatory no-business day is the only way.
On top of that, after living next to a supermarket for a few years… this is literally the only way to have a quiet day, without cars driving, and car doors slamming all the time. And of course night time deliveries, because you obviously can't lose day's business over such things.
And what I hate even more are these multi-day holidays and long weekends, where suddenly all my routine falls apart, and I can't really enjoy holidays while the train timetable is randomly punctuated. But then, I do realize that obligatory multi-day holidays are the only way for many people to simultaneously have a day off and be able to meet their families and friends.
I'm not really compatible with the world I'm living in.
