Meshtastic is basically useless unless you are already close enough to simply talk. Nerd toy. Buy a Baofeng. Don't worry about getting a license. If SHTF, just use the radio, it's literally legal to do so in an emergency (in case you're worried the FCC is going to send an Apache after your ass during a natural disaster or civil war)

I should probably put down the EEPROM, at least for a while, and move on to other stuff. But I'm having too much fun.
This is the dangerous part, and the part I have the most trouble with... the problem is so big you'll *never* be done (especially doing it manually without any automation, figuring out what each cell is by hand, etc).
There's always more to discover. Nerd sniping to the 20th power.

Ugh why is this always the way. I evaluated like 25 authentication servers for a small scale web project — I do want to support things like OIDC and Passkeys, so this is not something I really want to make myself like the old days of “use crypt() on the passwords and just make a simple database”.
5 of them are just dev mode garbage that will never see the light of day as a thing people use.
2 of them are home network nonsense for people who want enterprise login for their family, but where One Nerd controls the whole user-list.
15 of them are freemium "open source" where they withhold features for their enterprise tier and make them so unfortunately difficult to deploy, all requiring postgresql databases and a complex containerization setup and helm charts and oh so much.
and then there's kanidm, which is great except its opinions make it completely unusable for a community project, it's really more trying to fit the ‘enterprise unix authentication' space. Kudos to them for communicating it but it's the wrong tool, even if it is really good.
And then there's rauthy. Which is exactly what I want, well built and delightful, uses a lightweight embedded database, and even has a peer-to-peer sync for scalability. But customizing it is going to be a lesson in building it from source repeatedly, and its configuration is just a bit strange, and its frontend is extremely Backend Developer Wrote A Web UI. I guess I got a second project. And maybe a third to make debian packages of it.
Yet it really is the best of the options _by far_.
NLNet supported projects continue to punch above their weight class.

I enjoy a rant as much as the next nerd and npm and javascript can surely rustle my jimmies, but this feels so nostalgic and rose tinted, especially from an operational perspective.
My career started in 1998 and things by 2010 were very very far from perfect.
Java was no fun operationally. Development cycles of weeks or longer weren't ideal.
It was a different time not a generally better time.
Some fun bits in there though.

I carry both an iphone and a pixel these days. I think one of the best things about Android is the ability to set your own launcher. I've falled in love with Kvaesitso https://github.com/MM2-0/Kvaesitso - an open source launcher with good configurability and an awesome search. However in general it still feels like android is lagging behind iOS on the app side. I'm specially missing Shellfish (https://secureshellfish.app/) when i'm on the pixel. I even have juicessh pro and it's not nearly as good. I'm actually surprised the ssh client situation is so bad given the higher perceived nerd ratio for Android.

Wenn ich so durch die sozialen Medien schaue, habe ich manchmal das Gefühl der einzige Technik Nerd zu sein, der noch keines hat. Und jetzt am Black Friday gibt's die von Meta ja schon echt erschwinglich für 259 Euro. Das bringt mich in Versuchung. Aber irgendwie weiß ich auch noch nicht so richtig, was man damit machen soll. Außer vielleicht ein paar Spiele spielen.

Als Technik Nerd konnte ich dem Angebot für einen 21% reduzierten Full Array LED Fernseher von Sony einfach nicht widerstehen!
Am Black Friday gibt es die besten Rabatte auf die LED Fernseher. Dadurch würde ein OLED oder MicroLED dann doppelt so viel kosten, und das finde ich nicht gerechtfertigt.
Die LED XR Fernseher von Sony ja auch alles, was man sich wünschen kann.
Habt ihr euch auch schon für einen OLED Fernseher entschieden oder seid ihr wie ich noch bei LED?
