This is 1 of my bumper stickers. Yesterday, I looked in my rear view while sitting at a red light, & in the car behind me, the driver was holding up his hand, displaying metal horns & tracing the shape w/ the index finger of his other hand, while explaining the sticker to his passenger. I flashed my own metal horns hand for her. She laughed. He looked back over & laughed. I laughed. It was a fun little moment. Those are needed in these bleak times. 😉

Starting to set up the framing of the north wall of the new workshop. Two interesting problems here:
1. Am I going to want a large door in this wall? I think I can't have one, because I want either the east or the west wall to be removable to allow more light and space in summer; but I really need to think about this!
2. The shape of the foundation is very squint. Consequently, although the north and south walls will be parallel, the east and west won't. I have some int…

The way you make an axe haft is you take a straight grained piece of hickory or ash, you split it along the grain with a froe, and then you use a drawknife to do final shaping (including for the eye). The reason you do this is that the shape then follows the natural cellulose fibres of the wood, which are very much stronger along their length than at even at a very slight angle.

arXiv:2512.17678v1 Announce Type: new
Abstract: Selecting compact and informative gene subsets from single-cell transcriptomic data is essential for biomarker discovery, improving interpretability, and cost-effective profiling. However, most existing feature selection approaches either operate as multi-stage pipelines or rely on post hoc feature attribution, making selection and prediction weakly coupled. In this work, we present YOTO (you only train once), an end-to-end framework that jointly identifies discrete gene subsets and performs prediction within a single differentiable architecture. In our model, the prediction task directly guides which genes are selected, while the learned subsets, in turn, shape the predictive representation. This closed feedback loop enables the model to iteratively refine both what it selects and how it predicts during training. Unlike existing approaches, YOTO enforces sparsity so that only the selected genes contribute to inference, eliminating the need to train additional downstream classifiers. Through a multi-task learning design, the model learns shared representations across related objectives, allowing partially labeled datasets to inform one another, and discovering gene subsets that generalize across tasks without additional training steps. We evaluate YOTO on two representative single-cell RNA-seq datasets, showing that it consistently outperforms state-of-the-art baselines. These results demonstrate that sparse, end-to-end, multi-task gene subset selection improves predictive performance and yields compact and meaningful gene subsets, advancing biomarker discovery and single-cell analysis.

There are 3 fundamental freedoms outlined in Dawn of Everything:
(1) the freedom to move away or relocate from one’s surroundings;
(2) the freedom to ignore or disobey commands issued by others; and
(3) the freedom to shape entirely new social realities, or shift back and forth between different ones.
I think these can all be captured in one statement when reframed as a system constraint: for a system to be free, participation must be optional for all members.
People must be part of *some* system. Even individualistic survivalism is itself a system (if not a very good one). Then there is a corollary as well: any system that is not free, that is not optional, can turn optional systems into mandatory ones, and thus (adopted from the MLK quote) un-freedom anywhere is a threat to freedom everywhere.

First time I've seen a TO220ish shape resistor; I'm used to the chunkier ceramic power resistors; but when I picked it up I assumed this was a diode, but nope, does indeed read somewhere around 270 ohm.

A To-220 ish case resistor; Marked with a resistor symbol; 271, CF 7Z with an 'N' symbol in a diamond after the CF

Added 'a few' math tests to picolibc today. These create reference values using nickle with its arbitrary precision floating point arithmetic. The result is a list of functions which need work to improve their accuracy. Most are "close", with known errors of 1 or 2 ulp, but tgamma is in rough shape with errors of 56 ulp for binary64 and 97ulp for binary128. The complex functions are almost all in very rough shape with errors of thousands of ulps.

English Alt Text:
A black-and-white photo of a brick wall with a circular bicycle tire mounted at eye level. Two inner tubes hang loosely through the tire’s center, forming a shape reminiscent of the letter “Q.” Below the tire, wire mesh baskets rest on the ground—one filled with coiled cables or hoses, another stacked with empty baskets. A toolbox or container sits to the left. A diagonal shadow cuts across the left side, adding contrast. The composition is geometric and…

English Alt Text:
A black-and-white street scene featuring two chairs on a paved sidewalk. One is a simple wooden chair with vertical slats; the other is a worn school chair with a metal frame. Behind them are cabinets and containers with Chinese characters indicating services like car repair, shoe repair, and key duplication. The area is cluttered with wires, suitcases, and tools, suggesting a makeshift repair shop. The setting reflects urban resourcefulness.

A monochrome image of a large tree with thick, twisting branches, many of which are bare or sparsely leafed. The tree is heavily overgrown with vines, creating a tangled, dense appearance. Behind it stands a building with a tiled exterior, partially obscured. In the foreground, a patterned concrete wall runs horizontally. The scene feels eerie and dramatic, with stark contrasts between nature and architecture.

And we need to get clear about this, because LLMs •do• embed bias and their designers •can• steer and shape that bias and people •will• and •are• using that to shape public thought. Closed-source LLMs are an oligarch’s wet dream of thought control. And not all the oligarchs are as clueless as Musk.
We need to get clear on what kinds of evidence show bias — and bias by design — in LLMs. We need to train reporters in how to report this. We need to get our tools sharp. Like…yesterday.

Final day of having the carpenter here. A lot of sawing. Built the dresser desk drawers, cut all the perspex into shape for the windowed doors that fit together now but still need gluing.
The dresser drawers are just about big enough to put the hairdryer in, so that's nice.
Still quite a bit for the other workers to do. Detailing for panels on the doors, gluing and hanging the window doors, handles and painting and touch ups. They reckon another 5 days work still, only two of which can be next week because I have stuff to do.
Must be weird being a builder and finishing your part of the job then never seeing it completed. He's done all this great work on it but will only see the completed work if he has to come back for something else. And he doesn't want to come back coz he's fed up of driving across London 😆

In the foreground a mulch field with trees in bags resting on top, to the left and center a striking building with vertical window rows bent almost like an "L", blue sky above, and a gently curved big building that comes across as small in the wide angle view. A line of glistening points across the diagonal and a polygonal orange shape in the lower left were made by light from the sun (out of the frame to the upper right) bouncing around in my lens.

The headboard sockets are at about the right height :phew:
He was asking if the wardrobe should be backed with some kind of board or if these support struts should remain visible inside the wardrobe.
🤷
I guess it looks neater if you back it, but then there's also some lost space. It'd be painted either way of course.
