student_cooperation: Student cooperation (2012)
Network of cooperation among students in the "Computer and Network Security" course at Ben-Gurion University, in 2012. Nodes are students, and edges denote cooperation between students while doing their homework. The graph contains three types of links: Time, Computer, Partners.
This network has 185 nodes and 360 edges.

Heute sehe ich zum ersten Mal bei geizhals.de eine Radeon 9070 unterhalb der UVP. Wie lange hat das jetzt gebraucht? 6 Wochen? So ungefähr.

Let this be a lesson: my point about editing above goes deep. It's not just about writing words and editing words.
It's about decisions of any kind.
While deliberative paralysis is a thing, when you make "do" easier than "deliberate" (and increasingly tip the balance toward "do"), what happens is what's easy, not what's good. It is an accelerator for all kinds of things, a great many of them bad, and even more suboptimal.
There is around a 25 year window to pinpoint this proposed new dwarf planet, because its orbit takes 25000 years to complete… which probably means that the rate at which new ones will be discovered by the @… will help us better define how empty or how full the space between Neptune and the Kuiper Belt is…

On top of all of this there's a meta-effect: a certain class of their best engineers want no part of this and have left. The people with the peak insight that simplify things and unify products into cohesive, useful systems are leaving.
I'm absolutely certain they are reaping massive developer efficiencies with Copilot.
I do not believe they are building value with it.
Stupidly, today I decided to play around with the DuckDuckGo ai (duck.ai) to see if I could get it to write the code for me to change the resolution of a dataset to the native model resolution.
I *knew* that LLM were bad at math. But I didn’t realize HOW bad.
I asked it to change a 0.25 by 0.25 georeferenced global array to 1 by 1.25 degrees.
Maybe I was naïve in thinking it would ‘know’ that there are 180 degrees of latitude and 360 degrees on longitude.
But I had to do 5 prompts to get that piece corrected. Admittedly, I did not correct it directly— I corrected it as I would a student by prompting that there was an error in a particular line. (And yes- I realize it isn’t human and this is the wrong approach.)
I think I’m done with AI for now. I would have failed a student taking a class with me who didn’t have this most basic of knowledge down the first 5 minutes of class.
I keep thinking that LLM are sewing machines. They do a lot of good in the hands of someone who knows how to make them work, but they are only marginally better than hand-stitching when given to someone like me.
Is there a LLM that can write code in FORTRAN?
I'm asserting now that Github has crossed the event horizon into Enterprise Software. Complex enough that any bug is your fault for not reading the right docs and flipping the right configuration flags. The experience will keep getting worse. People will use it because they have to not because they want to. It will become the MS Teams of scm-devops-hosting-stuff.

Watch Github for what happens for companies that go all-in on AI.
Notice all the details that are wrong now. Notice the docs. Notice the confusion between different interfaces. Notice the UI jank in new places. This is what happens when engineering decisions are made by default instead of discussion and planning. This is what happens when writing (already easier than editing) becomes even easier without improving editing.

I found TDU in a box in the loft a couple of weeks ago, and since I now have a new Xbox 360 set up (replacing my old one which didn't have HDMI output) so can play games which are not compatible with the Xbox One, I thought I'd revisit the game. Unfortunately my save wasn't in the cloud, and wasn't transferred while I had both consoles set up, so I needed to start from the beginning.

Turns out that if you model online spaces after real world ones, it works pretty well. Online spaces let you be in many places at once which changes the dynamics, but as an example of something that ports well,
https://www.patternlanguageindex.com/patterns/intimacy-gradient
This pattern works not just for the design of houses but online spaces. Let people get to know a group in less-intimate space before they end up in the more-intimate space. Having a few gradations works really well, and it doesn't have to be a power play or status game.
Periodic reminder that the literal text of laws are actually full of phrases that have specific legal meanings settled by case law, and in absence of overriding legislation, you need a lawyer or a lot of legal experience to unpack what is actually being said. Sometimes this makes things better than expected, sometimes not.
Lawyers have jobs for a reason and it's not just being bloodsucking leeches.
