"So it’s not enough to equate Trump’s legions to the Gestapo or the Klan. (I’ve done both.) He also is the 21st-century version of Attila or Genghis Khan, heading a horde that is defined by an exterminationist loathing of cities and all that they stand for and promote. Their diversity, their toleration, their culture, their solidarity across racial and other lines—all are threats to the horde’s and its ruler’s autocratic monoculture. On the streets, the horde’s loathing manifests as indifference (at least) to the loss of city dwellers’ lives.
As it is the 21st century, and as we have an 18th-century Constitution, Trump’s impulse for city sacking Š la Attila is constrained by laws and customs, but he’s plainly determined to find ways around as many of those constraints as he possibly can. Correspondingly, a good share of the fear he’s engendered all across America has an ancient pedigree: It’s the fear of the barbarians at the gates."

One of the top stories on Hacker News today was a post arguing that Mozilla shouldn't accommodate any usage of AI in Firefox because (understandably) people were mad at Big AI companies for all the horrible things they've done to users and the internet and society. But I think people are ignoring the reality that *hundreds of millions of users* are using LLMs today, and they need to have tools from platforms that will look out for their interests.

The Page Isn’t Dead, Your Attention Is Under Siege
Every few years we are invited to attend the same funeral. Someone declares that nobody reads anymore, that the printed page is finished, that books are an aging technology destined to become a museum object while the living culture migrates to earbuds and short video. It is a tempting story because it flatters our sense that we are witnessing a clean break with the past, a decisive turn of the wheel.

Oil is the absolute enemy, and that should be completely clear at this point. Advocate hard for a Dutch style traffic plan and Dutch bike infrastructure. Push hard for mass transit. Fight car infrastructure with everything you can. Abolish free parking.
Every dollar you spend on gas, every dollar that goes to roads and free parking, is a dollar that will be spent murdering civilians to steal their oil.
Free parking is the most important subsidy to car culture. The more expensive you can make parking, the fewer cars will be on the road, the safer cities will be, and the less money will be available for the gang of thieves directing the military.

A black-and-white photo showing a utility pole with multiple electrical insulators and power lines silhouetted against the sky. On the left, a large elevated structure—possibly a bridge or overpass—features a streetlight and small fixtures. On the right, leafy tree branches partially obscure the pole. The image captures the contrast between nature and urban infrastructure, emphasizing the complexity of electrical systems in city environments.
