Just picked up this #Salter Improved Family Scale to gift a friend who's getting married and is into old-fashioned stuff and British stuff.
But, it doesn't quite sit at 0. Does anyone have any experience on how to tare a machine like this? There's no knob as far as I can see. The plate on top also doesn't seem like it can be removed without force.
More pictures below. …

A Salter's Family Scale, British-made, is displayed in seven images. The scale features a round, shallow pan at the top, supported by a central post connected to the main body. The body is a dark color, possibly black or dark green, with brass-colored accents.
The dial is white with black markings and text, indicating measurements in kilograms. The scale ranges from 0 to 10 kilograms, with smaller increments marked along the outer edge. The needle is brass-colored. The base of the scale is roun…

We've got buried treasure on view in a new display at the museum. Thanks to a recent gift and the work of a consultant and a staff member, we're displaying mingqi, or "spirit goods," in two adjoining cases in the permanent collection. Read on to learn more about how this grouping of well-preserved objects came together.

A color photograph of a Bactrian camel mingqi, or Chinese grave good. The camel has its right front knee on the ground, meaning that the bottom of its neck grazes the ground, and it holds its head up high. You can see remnants of colorful paint on its saddle and hair.

Yesterday managed to see at least a half dozen bands for #Kenmore Porchfest (#Buffalo). I only remembered to take one pic (at this RAtM cover band, Anger Is a Gift). They did a great job and the hosts had a cooler of water for everyone.
Kudos to everyone involved in the day.

A small front yard with a smaller tent failing to cover a four-piece band as a crowd extends down a few houses and well into the street. People are standing, sitting in camp chairs, lying on grass, chatting, and generally enjoying the sun and music.

Hermes, Polydeukes, and a satyr old and fat enough to be called Silenos are shown in a scene possibly inspired by a satyr play. Hermes stands at the left, his right leg propped on the tendril of an adjacent palmette. He wears high-laced sandals and a winged helmet and carries his caduceus in his left hand. I was given new shorts as a gift. And they still had the security tag. This seems to happen to me too often. They are easy enough to break off but this one had the dye capsules. The trick is to not pry against the tag. Slip the crowbar in between the two halves of the tag and use a screwdriver to pry the back off against the metal bar.

Stupid tags. Security.tag on clothing. Dye type so if you flex the tag from prying, you please the dye on your item. Two glass capsules, one with red dye and one with yellow are the top of the tag. Back is just plastic and a retaining pin

when it comes to #psychology and #mentalhealth I've read a decent number of #books on the topic.
I think the best I've read are:
- David D. Burns' Feeling Good (CBT generally including anxiety, depression)
- Sue Johnson's Hold Me Tight (romantic/marital relationships)
- Peter Kramer's Against Depression (on why depression is not a creative gift or sign of moral incompetence, biological underpinnings)
Peter Rutter's Sex in the Forbidden Zone has also been instrumental in forming my understanding of the unhealthy ways romantic interest manifests.
Anne Wilson Schaef's Co-Dependence: Misunderstood--Mistreated is the best I've read explaining how "being good" can oftentimes actually be bad.
The latter two are both more things I extract from the books rather than the books themselves and both are couched in ways that make them not ideally suited to the topic...but still the best I've found.
In addition one might include Joel Fuhrman's Eat for Life (I'm reading it now, I originally read Eat to Live) for nutritional health (which affects psychological) and David Allen's Getting Things Done (still one of the most influential books I've read on productivity).
My #question is, are there books you've read that you'd considered "must reads" on psychological / mental health? Not just mental illness, but mental health?
