TIL: Some of the estimates that are being passed around about the water consumption of (AI) data centers seem to be highly overstated.
Things I did not know about the high-end estimates being thrown around:
- Many of the most popular / graphic ones include not just the water used by the data center itself, but also the water used by the energy infrastructure used to power them. (Which is fair, but I did not know this, and it is often not framed that way).
- This includes stuf…
Forgive these sleep-deprived rantings - they come from a happy, people-appreciating place! :D
It has become freshly amazing to me, the many ways of framing or encountering music. As a child it almost always provoked narrative experience; travel escapades - personalities arriving, things happening, a world generating itself. This disappeared fairly quickly from around ten onwards, and went to abstraction: sound as sound, music as music. In feeling out metaphors to try and give it langua…

Here's somebody's blog post about grackles' fondness for dropping feces in water, written from the perspective of an annoyed koi-pond owner. The author gives the usual explanation that behavior reduces nest predation (presumably because fecal smell is attractant). I couldn't find support for this hypothesis in the primary literature, however. Nor could I find support for the idea that a clean nest reduces parasites such as flesh-eating flies. But I'm not a birdologist so I could have missed the definitive paper. https://www.pondtrademag.com/blackbird-gift-sacs-the-airmail-no-pond-keeper-wants/

The water level is now 5m below summer-average ... the last time I've seen that was when the level was lowered by intent for some improvements & repair. Now it's "simply" a lack of rain ... We need some rain very soon ...

Nero’s Bridge emerges from Tiber River amid water crisis
The remains of an ancient bridge have emerged in Rome’s Tiber River, near St. Peter’s Basilica, as weeks with virtually no rain caused water levels to plunge.
The span — known as Nero’s Bridge, named for the former Roman emperor — once connected Rome’s city center with the Tiber’s right bank.
The Tiber’s flow has fallen below 2,825 cubic feet per second, about half the historic average for the month of July, according…

Burn ham or Burn Oil?
Sounds like first policies are going to be more oil drilling and taking "control" of Thames Water.
Note that more oil drilling will NOT reduce the price of energy to the consumer, nor do much to increase sovereign energy independence. It will however mean lots of profits to the party donors from the oil industry, and of course mean more heat-domes and wildfires and floods and rising sea levels. More death from heatstroke.
Note also that "control" of Thames Water is not nationalization, not "ownership", it's just really more (likely toothless) regulation of private industry.
Welcome to the new boss, same as the old boss.

Key features that make a planet amenable to life, at least life as earthlings know it:
It should be rocky, be at the right temperature for liquid water to exist and have an atmosphere.
On Thursday, a team of astronomers announced that it had identified a world with all three traits.
“At this point, we have absolutely no evidence for life on the planet,”
said Collin Cherubim, a planetary scientist who recently earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University.

We have benefited in many ways from the new building codes and appliance efficiency standards: lower utility bills & safer buildings for occupants, not wasting scarce resources such as water reduces costs as well.
