"We feel accountable to our religious tradition. And just as accountable to our own intuition. When we have a question or a challenge on our religious tradition, we don't abandon our religious tradition, nor do we assume a posture of submission or sacrifice towards our own intution. That is not what the Talmud does, instead, we think harder, think more critically, think more carefully." Sammanfattar bra min syn på bibeltolkning och vrf Talmud är ett så storslaget dokument

Thinking back, I spent a hell of a lot of time in school learning to write by hand. By far, the most text I compose is behind a keyboard, and I go out of my way to find opportunities to write in longhand. I can't help but wonder what else I could've learnt that may've been actually useful later in life.
Also, my cursive’s so impenetrable that I sometimes wonder if a given passage is in English or Dutch, only to remember I don't know Dutch. Whatever I *did* learn clearly…

I don't get people with their "Friday evening out" or "night life" ideas. I mean, what's there to live when it's dark outside? You can live when it's daylight and you can go to a forest or something, but when it's dark, all you can do is either work or sleep.

Am I reading "Being and Nothingness" by Jean-Paul Sartre?
Yes. Because everyone dies. You, me, everyone, and everything we ever cared about. So why should you lose sleep over what happens or what anyone thinks, when the ending is already written?
When nothing has inherent meaning, I might as well understand why.

Just finished "It's Lonely at the Center of the Earth" by Zoe Thorogood.
CW: Frank/graphic discussion of suicide and depression (not in this post but in the book).
It feels a bit wrong to simply give it my review here as I would another graphic memoir, because it's much more personal and less consensual than the usual. It feels less like Thorogood has invited us into her life than like she was forced to put her life on display in order to survive, and while I selfishly like to read into the book that she benefited in some way from the process, she's honest about how tenuous and sometimes false that claim can be. Knowing what I've learned from this book about Thorogood's life and demons, I don't want her to feel the mortification of being perceived by me, and so perhaps the best thing I could do is to simply unread the book and pull it back out of my memories.
I did not find Thorogood's life relatable, nor pitiable (although my instinct bends in that direction), but instead sacred and unknowable. I suspect that her writing and drawing has helped others in similar circumstances, but she leaves me with no illusion that this fact brings her any form of peace or joy. I wonder what she would feel reading "Lab Girl" or "The Deep Dark," but she has been honest enough to convey that such speculation on my part is a bit intrusive.
I guess the one other thing I have to say: Zoe Thorogood has through artistic perseverance developed an awe-inspiring mastery of the comic medium, from panel composition, through to page layout and writing. This book wields both Truth and Beauty.

Duaa Izzidien - Visual Storyteller & Artist on Instagram: "I had far too much fun creating this reel and couldn’t bring myself to delete any of it to make it shorter and more algorithm friendly 🙈 If you watched it all the way to the end - well done! You’ve just demonstrated the very thing the reel is about - showing up is the only talent that matters. My arrows don’t always hit the target. My paintings don’t always turn out how I planned. And honestly? Life rarely goes the way I intend. But really that isn’t what matters. In Islam we say that actions are by intentions and that sometimes means letting go of controlling our outcomes. We can control our intentions, our effort, showing up - but we have to remember that the result doesn’t actually come from those actions. Sometimes the arrow misses because there’s a better lesson waiting or perhaps it’s to remind you to stay humble and remember that ‘you’ are not the architect of your success. Sometimes the painting goes “wrong” because it’s becoming something more beautiful than you imagined. Sometimes life doesn’t work out the way you planned because there’s something different, better, round the corner for you. A huge thank you to @thabitoon_archers and @mamluk.academy for teaching me. You’ve taught me far more than just archery - you’ve taught me a rich history and life lessons that bring peace. (any mistakes in my form are entirely mine!). Selling stuff on eBay is so funny sometimes, like when someone extremely low-balls you and you decline their offer and then they message you with "What's your lowest?"
That's not how haggling works, you need to make a fair offer to the seller—it's a deeply human thing to negotiate about price, and both sides need to be respectful of each other.
I think haggling should be taught in school tbh. A real life skill.

I don't envy "vibe coders". I mean, let's for a minute assume that their vision is not a pipe dream, but an accurate prediction of the future.
For a start, what's their plan for life? Driving a tool whose primary selling point is that anyone can use it. And I'm not even talking about all the inside competition. I'm talking of people realizing that they can cut the middleperson and do the coding themselves.
The way I see it, vibe coders are a bit like typists (with no offense to typists). Their profession is a product of a novelty. And just like typists largely disappeared when typewriters and then computers became commonplace, so are vibe coders bound to disappear when vibe coding becomes commonplace.
And are true programmers going to become obsolete? Well, let me ask you: did the proliferation of cars and corresponding self-service skills render car mechanics obsolete? On the contrary. The way I see it, the proliferation of slopcode will only make competent programmers ever the more necessary.
What vibe coders are saying is basically this: "This new automated self-service kit makes car maintenance so easy. Car mechanics will become obsolete now. Everyone's just going to hire *me* to run this kit instead."

The thing about a life-logger, is you input sensitive data about your life, lifestyle and activities, so privacy and data-integrity are some of the most important issues.
There can be no server, the data has to be yours and yours alone. Because you can’t tell what is happening to the data in a closed-source app, it must be completely free and open source.
You can’t trust a corporate diary, they must sell to anyone offering enough money.
So it is with my life log app, all data completely in your own device. No home server ever sees anything.
There is no home server. Just the code.
To achieve this Exocortex Log is a Progressive Web App. It downloads when you are online at the website and can be installed onto the homepage of your phone.
It keeps all data on the local device using indexdb.
This means you must be responsible for your own backups. Be sure to export and back up your data regularly. I have gaps in my ten year record where my phone was stolen and most recent backup was months prior.
Once installed it will work offline, airplane mode, no internet, down in the tube station at midnight, anywhere.
There's a blog on the website saying this and more: exocortexlog.com/news/articles

Imagine a world that we all control together, not controlled by oligarch or dictators, even indirectly. Imagine something truly collaborative. That world would be very different from our own. In some ways many of us could have a lot more opportunity. But in others, we would be restricted.
In such a world, we couldn't really have elite luxuries. Having such luxuries is only valuable so long as others do not.
> Unlike the vacuum cleaner, the radio, or the bicycle, which retain their use value when everyone has one, the car, like a villa by the sea, is only desirable and useful insofar as the masses don’t have one.
- The Social Ideology of the Motorcar
Imagine a world in which we think about luxury in a radically different way, not as something that only has value via exclusivity but something that enriches the lives of the owners more as more people have them.

Kimi Onoda, Japan's new Minister of State for Economic Security, is a 43 year old half-Irish ex-game industry PR femcel with an extensive history of defending her exclusive attraction to anime boys on twitter

I don't think it's twisted at all.

I'm a woman who likes men, and I'm not interested in 3D men.

That's all.
I apologize for rambling on. I just couldn't stay silent... I really wish I had more allies within the party...

From here on, this is completely my personal opinion, but fundamentally, people who truly love 2D wouldn't touch 3D at all. I myself have absolutely no interest in 3D and consider it out of bounds. Maybe that kind of feeling is something only those involved can understand.
"Hurry up and get married," "Have kids" I've been told this by voters since my 20s, but even at 40, I still sigh every time these words are thrown at me. At what age will I finally be free of this?

In the 3D world, I'm married to my country, and besides, I've said my private life is 2D-exclusive, haven't I!! I'll say it over and over: I'm 2D-exclusive!!
I've been saying this for a while now, but I don't consider 3D (real-life) people as romantic prospects. I'm dead serious, not joking. For me, the very act of someone seeing the "possibility of marriage" in me is inherently uncomfortable (quoted from a reply)-it's the same as if you were to suggest to a gay person that they marry someone of the opposite sex... If you’re baffled by the chasm between “How could anyone support this kind of cruelty??” and “Society needs a Strong Father Figure with a firm hand,” well…
…look to who has endured abuse, who has only seen and abhorred abuse but not endured it, who has escaped abuse (and at what personal cost), who’s spent their life rationalizing and accommodating abuse, who is themselves an abuser.
Look at that, then look at what they think of Trump.

Series A, Episode 13 - Orac
BLAKE: Zen, surface conditions?
ZEN: Tolerable. The land masses are arid and support only primitive plant life. Nine tenths of the planet is covered by water which is highly acidic. The level of the oceans is constantly rising and they now virtually cover all traces of the cities built by early civilizations.

Claude 3.7 describes the image as: "This image shows a scene from what appears to be the classic British science fiction series "Blake's 7." The setting is the interior of a spacecraft, likely the flight deck of the Liberator, with its distinctive control panels and futuristic design elements.

The scene depicts two people in the ship's control room - one wearing dark clothing with a green garment, and another in a red outfit. They appear to be operating or examining the ship's controls. The s…

On February 3, 2023, a Norfolk Southern train carrying hazardous chemicals derailed in the small town of East Palestine, Ohio.
Three days later, Norfolk Southern pressured local authorities to dump and burn five tanker cars full of chemicals,
blasting a mushroom cloud of toxic phosgene and hydrogen chloride into the air.
Nearly three years later, residents like Jami Wallace and her family are still suffering the toxic fallout

"Look again at this small world. This is home. The only home we’ve ever known.
Every person who has ever lived. Every story ever told. Every love, every war, every sacrifice – it has all happened here on this tiny, drifting world.
And yet, we act as if there is another waiting for us. We carve borders into the land and fight over them. We build towers of wealth while others are left to starve.
We poison the water we drink, scorch the air we breathe and tear apart the very foundation of life, driven by the hunger for more, by the illusion of control.
We hold power over each other but not over the forces that could erase us in an instant. A rock adrift in space could end it all. A wave of fire from deep within the earth could rewrite the world in a single eruption. A burst of radiation from a distant sun could silence everything we’ve built.
In the face of the universe we are fragile beyond measure. Mere passengers on a planet that owes us nothing. And yet, we fight, we kill, we burn our home as if it were replaceable.
We act as though our time here is infinite. Though history has shown us otherwise. But for now this is all we have. Out there among the countless stars, there may be other worlds. Planets where life has taken root. Where others look up and wonder if they too are alone. But they are distant beyond our reach, beyond our time.
For the foreseeable future there is no second earth, no distant rescue. This is where we stand. This is where we make our living. What happens here, what we choose to destroy, what we choose to protect will echo long after we’re gone.
Think again how small we are. how brief our time is, how easily we could vanish. A fraction of a second in the lifespan of the universe, a blink in the endless dark. And yet in this fleeting moment we are here.
We love, we create, we shape the world around us. What we do with our time matters. Because in the end everything we leave behind is what we chose to built and who we chose to be. But for now we stand together on a mote of dust."

Door Dasher Life Fun Facts: This might be useful to think of when you're rating your Dasher.... Who's at fault in this situation?
Let's say I accept an offer for McDonalds.
I head straight there... pull up to the store, and as I walk in the app buzzes again with a 2nd order for the same McDs.
Naturally, I accept. (not accepting reduces my Acceptance rate and potentially my ability to get new offers).
Now I have two orders at the same place! Great! Efficient!
The first order comes up quickly, I put it in my bag, 'pick it up' in the app, and wait for the 2nd order.
Now the fun begins. The restaurant says the 2nd order will be 10 minutes beyond the pickup time. I notify the app, and both customers of the wait... and I wait... and wait... if I remove the 2nd order from my app it affects my completion rate *and* means the customer has to wait for another dasher to come along.
Eventually the 2nd order is ready and I head out to make the deliveries. Both of course now late.. the first potentially cold (even in an insulated bag) *and* late.
In addition, sometimes, often a day or two later, the dasher will receive a “Contract Violation” for the lateness. 3 Contract Violations in a short period and you can be deactivated.
So... there ya go. It happens. I'm never sure what the best course of action is... unless both orders are immediately ready, which you can never predict, someone will end up losing; the store, customer, dasher, or a mix of all three.
#DasherLife #GigWork #DoorDash #Uber
P.S. It's worth noting that Door Dash is the only service I know of that is this strict. Uber Eats does not have mechanisms like this (at least in my experience). Never used Skip, so can't say on that.

What @… said here, and so well said.
Note that deciding it’s the wrong time to rub somebody’s nose in how incredibly wrong they were doesn’t make them any less wrong. Listening is not the same thing as accepting. Sometimes it’s a moment to say “you dumbass,” and sometimes it’s a moment to say “And how did that work out for you?” The wise know the difference.
People who were taken in by the likes of these scammers •can• walk out of it in moments of cognitive dissonance — and if you’re in a position to do what Luna describes with someone you know, you might just change a life.

The term “yada kenarji” is part of our private family lexicon, and I want it to become general English.
It’s a based on my kid mishearing “chaotic energy” when they were very young, and that’s what it means: something adjacent to “unhinged” and “the zoomies,” fun but also alarming, with both a physical and mental component.
“Michael J Fox as Marty McFly being all cool, taking in his amazing new life, and then Christopher Lloyd just busts in with all this yada kenarji”

For my birthday today… I deleted the Facebook account I created in September to access Marketplace. It served its purpose. I was going to sell other things but never got around to it. Then friends started requesting to be friends. It was awkward. I didn’t accept any requests and even made one post on my profile that I wouldn’t be friending anyone.. that it was only for Marketplace. People still requested…
Then a colleague/friend passed away and I missed an RSVP because someone sent me the message on FB rather than real life even though we weren’t FB connected and hadn’t communicated on there for years. This is what happens when people treat FB like the entirety of “the internet” and “communication”. I have a website with my name and phone! My address is not hard to search. Email!?
I was angry and sad about that. 😢
So ya… if I do the Marketplace thing again I’ll just make a temp account and delete it after use, like a single use plastic bag to pick up dog poop. 💩 🤣
In the meantime I’ll keep focusing on good people here on the #opensocialweb… and also connecting with people in real life.
Most of the 48 years I have spent on this earth have been without Facebook. I’ll manage :)

I've filed a report about a minor problem with a #Python package, namely that the source distribution contained some trailing junk that breaks GNU #tar. On one hand, I'm happy that upstream took the issue seriously. On the other hand, I'm terrified of how much #AI slop was involved in the response.
I mean, my short bug report yielded a few walls of text of #LLM analysis of what the cause of the problem might be, of suggested solutions… and praise of the author's fix. These are interspersed with short comments from the author, all pasted under their own personal account. And the linked pull request is also huge, with "verification code" that's quite sloppy (bits that don't do anything, conditions that will never be true… but at least it seems to do what it was supposed to do).
Honestly, I don't know what to do. Not that I ever planned using this package, but at this point I will definitely stay away from it. It's in #Gentoo, and I'll have to continue maintaining it for the sake of reverse dependencies, but I feel like it's unfair to expose our users to packages that have clearly proven to accept AI slop without reviewing it properly. Or rather, AI slop that's being reviewed… by AI. How can anyone think this a good idea?!
There were multiple times in my life when I've considered retiring from Gentoo, for variety of reasons. There were also multiple times when I wanted to get away from computers altogether. Unfortunately, we're living in a truly fucked up world, and there is no escape. The best you can do is put an ever increasing effort to keep fixing all that crap that will just keep piling on faster and faster.
