Somehow I got myself on this mailing list, every month or 3 they send a list of used printing equipment in Europe. I actually enjoy glancing at it, definitely a Heavy Metal vibe, for example this thing, made in 2011, has printed 137M impressions, and can be yours for a mere 420,000€. Free shipping probably not available.
#Vancouver folks: They’ve renamed Trutch St (thank goodness, Trutch was an asshole), its new name translated into English is “Musqueamview”. In Musqueam that’s “šxʷməθkʷəyΓəmasəm” which, it turns out, sounds like “sh-musqueam-awesome” to my ears. I think it’d be cool if we were all saying sh-musqueam-awesome to each other.
Gosh it's shocking how good Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers were right at the beginning.

Ultra-wealthy, the Senate beside the story
By opposing the 2% minimum wealth tax on the 1,800 French people whose net worth exceeds €100 million, after the measure was adopted by France's Assemblée nationale (lower house of Parliament), the upper house, the Sénat, has shown just how disconnected it is from the issues of our time. This is nothing new. Between 1896 …

I’ve long been a fan of the Check My Ads people. Now they’re launching a really ambitious-looking “Policy Platform” aimed at cleaning up the online-advertising business. My belief is that anyone who’s had much exposure to that business or to “AdTech” probably agrees that cleanup is called for. Check it out: https://checkmyads.org/policy/
I totally should have got a heat pump when we replaced our furnace a few years ago but a) the folks we bought from (who sell heat pumps) said not to, b) my electrician said not to, and c) the rebate/inspection process was extremely confusing to navigate.

Am running across occasional uses of the phrases “Mastodon tweet” and “Bluesky tweet”. Hmm… I think that’s OK. Twitter is irretrievably gone so let’s memorialize it in a short, pleasant, instantly-understandable new idiom.

1/2 “My input stream is full of it: Fear and loathing and cheerleading and prognosticating on what generative AI means and whether it’s Good or Bad and what we should be doing. All the channels: Blogs and peer-reviewed papers and social-media posts and business-news stories. So there’s lots of AI angst out there, but this is mine. I think the following is a bit unique because it focuses on cost, working backward from there.”

Trying to order a product I normally get from Amazon, directly from the vendor.
Takes 4 days to say “order getting ready”, still in that state 3 days later, and it costs 25% more! It also takes 3-4 business days to hear back from their support.
From Amazon, in their own store, it's cheaper and comes in like 2 days.
I know I shouldn't expect same speed/pricing from vendors as Amazon, but this makes it very hard to support vendors directly.
Am I expecting too mu…
