Can Autism Spectrum be a superpower? Well, sometimes, I guess.
It's the same kind of superpower like having a chaingun in place of your hand. There are days you feel like you definitely ought to use it. And it sounds really cool in theory.
But it's not very useful if you need to open a jar. And I dare say that in my life, jar-opening situations are far more common than situations needing a chaingun. On top of that, most people don't really appreciate *you* having it, as if you had a choice.

There’s not single shred of evidence, not an iota of a glimpse of a possibly of maybe LLM’s having any sort of even the remotest flicker of thinking.

So I explained that the verb of “affect” is “effect” and “affectation” means something else.
I was merciful and didn’t explain that “affect” is also a noun meaning something completely different: “The suspect was described as having a flat affect”.
Nor that “effect” is also a verb, also different: “I effected the funds transfer”.

So I’ve got a new gig of sorts. I’ll be a volunteer photographer for the city parks system. The task will be to take pics of folks participating in various programs in the parks and natural areas run by other volunteers, to try and capture that attendees are having fun, especially the kids. The difficulty level is that I’ve never liked photographing people. Go out of my way to keep them out of shots. I’ve done a couple events now, and still just feel intrusive. Hope it gets easier.

Veganism, a thread 🧵:
Having gone vegan, I genuinely struggle now to square vegetarians' love of animals with the realities of the dairy and egg industries. For context, I grew up vegetarian and went vegan about 5 years ago now, but I realized the inherent moral tension back in college (I just wanted to do some research to ensure I wasn't losing nutrition and stuff, more on that later).

Just had a "why didn't I think of this sooner?"-moment. Having moved my mail away from Google, I sometimes missed having web access. I then remembered my free Nextcloud account at Tab Digital and ... there's an IMAP client. Added my work calendar as well, so I can quickly get an overview. I wish I could hook up my Filen storage to Nextcloud, as I already have documents there. It may be possible, but if it is, I haven't found where to do it yet.

What a waste. This is on the players. Dom needs to bury the PK. Konate cannot get the damn yips and shut down mentally (again). Non penalty xG was 2.16 to 0.33, Burnley having cleared two off the line.
Players need to finish, sure, but it’s the mental mistakes that cost 2 points.

This should not surprise anyone. It is amazing this is still having to be debated.
So I finally (what, a decade behind popular trends??) am having reason to experiment with actual use of Docker in production, and…I’m surprised at how disappointing it is.
The configuration is clumsy, a dangerous mix of boilerplate and footgun customization points. The dockerfile / compose division of labor is nonsensical; it apparently grew by accretion instead of design. There are lots of loose ends left for hosting services to tie up, and the product thus fails in what would seem to be a primary goal of avoiding hosting vendor lock-in.
Am I simply Not Getting It Yet™, or is the state of the art actually like this?

Now officially shopping for an organization, ideally in Canada but absolutely out of US jurisdiction (Europe OK), to provide Web & DNS support. We have a few mostly-dormant WordPress blogs and static sites, a bunch of identity-supporting DNS records, and that's about it. Nothing very high-traffic, should be an easy ask. Would prefer something that demonstrates resilience and stability by having been around a few years.

The joys of working on an open source project that interfaces to obscure, sometimes obsolete hardware: regression testing is almost impossible.
Sure, we can catch regressions in the GUI easily. But if a big fix to a driver breaks things for a different scope supported by that driver, there's no way to test without having one of those scopes around to validate things against.

Fun observation from a year of my UPS load graph; while it's very noisy, that big drop in November is when I reinstalled it with a newer OS version and rebuilt the whole installation; so it made a noticeable difference! I'm not sure of the actual power - this UPS only gives me a percentage and it's very rough anyway, So I suspect just a watt or two, maybe clearing out old cron's and having a newer kernel is worth it!

Just a little one and a half hour walk nearby before it was supposed to be raining (and rugby starts).
It was a nice walk and good to be out. Strangely, my old GPS device refused to get a location despite having lots of satellites. Just 10min before coming back (after a couple of restarts and taking the batteries out and back in) it worked.
Fortunately, I only had it with me to test if my heart rate monitor also connects to it.

@GrapheneOS@grapheneos.social I’m still having problems with Graphene and Wi-Fi. It’s only with Graphene, not with other Android devices. Apparently, Graphene – and only Graphene – prefers a 2.4 GHz connection. And it switches from 5 GHz to 2.4 GHz shortly after logging in. Which none of the other Android devices do. This is a problem for me because, although the router maintains the connection on 2.4 GHz, it doesn’t connect to the internet at 2.4Ghz.

Working on improving error reporting in ngscopeclient rather than having filters simply silently produce no output, or log to stdout, when something goes wrong.
Here's my current WIP: the block that has problems displays a warning icon and summary title up top, then you can mouse over it to see more detailed error information.
Thoughts? Anything I should change before I start working on adding this sort of feedback to more filter blocks?
Does anybody have a connection at Signal who could receive some urgent app design feedback? The app has several very specific problems / limitations / design quirks that are causing major headaches for neighbor groups trying to communicate here in Minneapolis.
(I’ll eventually try to write up some feedback through normal channels so it can go through the normal user feedback pipeline — but I’m sure any fixes that arrive that way will arrive far too late to be useful to us, so I’m not even bothering now. If there’s any chance of having some issues prioritized, I’d sure appreciate it.)
