Groaning at probably having to finally “up”grade to Liquid Glass because of the latest round of iOS security breaches, hanging out with my parents and wincing at the cartoonish look of the latest macOS on their screens, and…
…I’m just once again hit with my periodic nostalgia for the days when it was possible to pin the Dock to the upper corner instead of having it always centered (and thus having my pinned apps always appear in a predictable location).
These little things are so big when one lives with them every day.

Can Autism Spectrum be a superpower? Well, sometimes, I guess.
It's the same kind of superpower like having a chaingun in place of your hand. There are days you feel like you definitely ought to use it. And it sounds really cool in theory.
But it's not very useful if you need to open a jar. And I dare say that in my life, jar-opening situations are far more common than situations needing a chaingun. On top of that, most people don't really appreciate *you* having it, as if you had a choice.

So I explained that the verb of “affect” is “effect” and “affectation” means something else.

I came to believe that societies decay not
because they lack talent, but because they
elevate the wrong kind.
They reward caution over courage, repetition
over creation, politeness over force of will.
Institutions, I concluded, do not exist to
cultivate greatness; they exist to domesticate it.
From that premise, everything else followed
naturally.

So I’ve got a new gig of sorts. I’ll be a volunteer photographer for the city parks system. The task will be to take pics of folks participating in various programs in the parks and natural areas run by other volunteers, to try and capture that attendees are having fun, especially the kids. The difficulty level is that I’ve never liked photographing people. Go out of my way to keep them out of shots. I’ve done a couple events now, and still just feel intrusive. Hope it gets easier.

Content warning: ICE & resistance

In case anyone was wondering about the relevance of #LandBack in the current moment, via CrimeThinc an article on the Minneapolis resistance states:
"""
The Whipple, a federal building in Fort Snelling on the outskirts of the Minneapolis and St. Paul, has long been a regional headquarters for ICE, having previously housed other federal agencies. The complex is located across the street from a National Guard base, down the road from a military base, and next to the preserved fort itself. The fort sits on the sacred site of the convergence of two rivers. It was one of the earliest sites of colonization in the area; at one time, it was a concentration camp holding native Dakota people.
"""
If at any point in the past you ever felt that maybe Native soverignty was a niche issue, or so far from being realized that other causes were more important or relevant, things like this are a good reminder that that cause: overturning the colonial order, is the *same* cause as any meaningful change from the fascist status quo. Things like a "return to democracy" aren't necessarily bad, but the rot runs to the root of this nation, and any intervention that doesn't go that deep is going to leave us right back in this situation again later on.
The fact that ICE is detaining Native Americans is not at all a mistake given their white supremacist aims.

So I finally (what, a decade behind popular trends??) am having reason to experiment with actual use of Docker in production, and…I’m surprised at how disappointing it is.
The configuration is clumsy, a dangerous mix of boilerplate and footgun customization points. The dockerfile / compose division of labor is nonsensical; it apparently grew by accretion instead of design. There are lots of loose ends left for hosting services to tie up, and the product thus fails in what would seem to be a primary goal of avoiding hosting vendor lock-in.
Am I simply Not Getting It Yet™, or is the state of the art actually like this?

Fun observation from a year of my UPS load graph; while it's very noisy, that big drop in November is when I reinstalled it with a newer OS version and rebuilt the whole installation; so it made a noticeable difference! I'm not sure of the actual power - this UPS only gives me a percentage and it's very rough anyway, So I suspect just a watt or two, maybe clearing out old cron's and having a newer kernel is worth it!

A grapf of 'Load' with a vertical axis of % between 6.8-7.8 and a horizontal axis of date over about a year. There's a noticeable dip in November, but it's very noisy and bouncy.

We're having our hallway replastered and painted by a property maintenance company. It's taking weeks, with painters turning up to paint walls that haven't been stripped yet, or with the wrong equipment, and people showing up for a few hours before being told to do another half day the other side of Sheffield so they have to spend ages sitting in traffic for no apparent reason, or no-one turning up for a week halfway through a job.. The person running the business is absolutely o…

US passports are property of the US government and must be surrendered "upon demand."
Am I comfortable having my vote, indeed my very existence, depend on that?
No.

Rượu vang đỏ. Anywhere in Vietnam this means red wine (đỏ meaning red).
We are here in farmers country, so I am having a watermelon homebrew at 11 am. Nothing is wasted. We call it rượu vang.😎

@GrapheneOS@grapheneos.social I’m still having problems with Graphene and Wi-Fi. It’s only with Graphene, not with other Android devices. Apparently, Graphene – and only Graphene – prefers a 2.4 GHz connection. And it switches from 5 GHz to 2.4 GHz shortly after logging in. Which none of the other Android devices do. This is a problem for me because, although the router maintains the connection on 2.4 GHz, it doesn’t connect to the internet at 2.4Ghz.

Why are we having fewer children?
(Interview with Berkay Ozcan, Professor at LSE)
- Couple formation happens at later age
- Women are choosing "careers" and not just "jobs"
- More people choose not to have kids at all
What else is going on? Short anser: we don't know yet
Even in countries providing a lot of support to parents, fertility rate has still declined
Immigration is no silver bullet. It's part of the solution, not th…

Mailbag: Experience vs. cutting edge at DC? dallascowboys.com/news/mailbag

A so-called mini “baby boom” is unfolding across the upper echelons of the Trump administration.
Karoline Leavitt, Usha Vance, and Katie Miller are pregnant, each with due dates in late spring or summer.
Their pregnancies have been accompanied by a bit of culture war, too:
Fox News noted the “full boom” as evidence that the women are enthusiastic devotees of the administration’s pronatalist agenda.
In a December Instagram post announcing her pregnancy, Leavitt thanked…

This general category of question from @… is something I wonder about a lot. For many/most human beings, hearing good information and even •knowing• it to be true just doesn’t seem to outweigh having bad information in one’s face over and over.
I know there will a Mastodonian urge to reply with “well ••I•• never succumb to that” or “Here’s how I avoid that,” and…good for you, I guess? (Also, really?) But not the question. The question is how we communicate to people who •are• succumbing.

Working on improving error reporting in ngscopeclient rather than having filters simply silently produce no output, or log to stdout, when something goes wrong.
Here's my current WIP: the block that has problems displays a warning icon and summary title up top, then you can mouse over it to see more detailed error information.
Thoughts? Anything I should change before I start working on adding this sort of feedback to more filter blocks?

Screenshot of a ngscopeclient filter graph with an eye pattern block displaying an exclamation point icon and the text "missing inputs" above it. A tooltip next to this message reads "No clock input connected".

Does anybody have a connection at Signal who could receive some urgent app design feedback? The app has several very specific problems / limitations / design quirks that are causing major headaches for neighbor groups trying to communicate here in Minneapolis.
(I’ll eventually try to write up some feedback through normal channels so it can go through the normal user feedback pipeline — but I’m sure any fixes that arrive that way will arrive far too late to be useful to us, so I’m not even bothering now. If there’s any chance of having some issues prioritized, I’d sure appreciate it.)
[ETA: I already tagged Mer__edith, but I’m sure she’s far too busy and her mentions are far too crowded for her to give this attention]

Like, I know, I •know• those little kids know all about what’s going on, I know they’re afraid, I’m sure some of them have family members who’ve already been taken and many more who are in danger…
…and here’s this teacher, this whole school community, who’ve somehow managed to make it so that they can still be having a day at school, still getting to just be kids for a little while.
K-12 educators are a frigging miracle. Community is a frigging miracle.
