@… tipped me of to the best rsync tip. Always . at the end of your paths to remove the "is this gonna sync the directory and it's contents or the contents of this directory" ambiguity
`rsync -avsPW host:/path/. data/.`
(how the hell did I typo the original version of this? Fixed.)
'xxd' is a command that is both a hex dumper, and an undumper - i.e. it can turn the hexdump back into a binary.
Being able to go both ways makes it good for being able to edit a hex file in your favourite editor. Other tricks it can do are to generate a C array declaration with the contents. It defaults to hex numbered address (unlike 'hexdump' which confusingly uses octal!)
If you'd like to search the contents of our magazine from the comfort of your terminal, here's the "s" tool.

I often find myself in this position -- checking whether there are any files in an old folder not in the new location, before deleting the old folder -- and generally re-invent the wheel. Here's a 1-liner that checks (works in Julia, similar in Python, R, other langs likely):
setdiff(
readdir("./lumber/oldfiles"),
readdir("./stuff/newfiles"))
Obvs, not checking timestamp or contents.
Edit: Julia doesn't interpret "~/"

Getting that dd command from history, changing the iso to the FreeBSD one, and zapping it onto /dev/sda indeed did correctly overwrite my 2TB external disk. Not the contents of /dev/sdb, the USB stick where it should land.
That's what you get for inserting extra disks 🥳 🤓 😂

Poor #productmanagement: if your software works on files in a directory, and the contents of that directory are subject to change (say, switching between branches in a code repo), then don't CACHE the list of files in that directory that you care about and stash that shit in `%user%/.config/la-la-la-la-lookatme-im-expensive-software/cache` and then show that to the user.

What was clearer was what Trump was getting out of it:
