I wrote a story. It starts:
He woke up, looking forward to finally fishing. He’s retired, even though he feels like he could keep doing the work, and now, finally, he has the chance to go out on his boat, with a beer and his rod to catch something. Maybe if he catches enough he can fill the whole freezer set up in the basement. Fresh frozen fish for months.
The rest of it:

“…what we’re witnessing is the express repetition of a project on the scale of the larger concentration camp systems in history—the Soviet Gulag, the Nazi concentration camps, and Chinese labor camps in the People’s Republic of China. The administration is actively aspiring to a system of that magnitude to reshape society to its racial, political and cultural preferences for generations to come.
This is not just a fantasy. It is something for which the administration has acquired the funding and a path forward. It lacks only the personnel and enough detention spaces.”

People are getting really confused about this. When I say “pretext,” I don’t mean for individual ICE officers. I mean that the Trump regime still (!!) does not have enough popular support and political cover to cross certain lines. They’re finding themselves genuinely stymied by federal courts and state govs, Congress is getting less (not more!) quiescent, they’re finding themselves unable to control the press, and popular support is collapsing.
Saying “the situation is already extremely dire” is true and important. Saying “they’ve already achieved total authoritarian control” is wrong, dangerous, and an invitation to give up when we most need people active.

It's the assumption that we will change one thing and all else will be the same.
In this case, we will fire lots and lots of employees all over the world and we will make lots of profit. We're smart enough to make the AI, and we're dumb enough to think that there will only be one consequence. 1/n

They argue that genAI won’t produce sufficient revenue from consumers to pay back the current investment frenzy. I mean, they’re right, it won’t, but that’s not what the investors are buying. They’re buying the promise, not of more revenue, but of higher profits that happen when tens of millions of knowledge workers are replaced by (presumably-cheaper) genAI. ¶

When "self-driving" cars were first getting some hype back in ~2015 or so, I told people who asked me that I didn't think they'd be safe, and that I wished the same money were being invested in driver-assistance systems instead.
At the time, advocates were claiming that self-driving cars would be safer than human drivers.
We now have both self-driving cars and some nifty new driver assistance things, and it turns out that the self-driving cars are in fact being developed by corporations whose attention to the bottom line results in danger to others on the road pretty regularly. I don't actually have stats here for whether they're "safer than human drivers" or not, but the opportunity for one bad software update to make *all* self-driving cars dangerous at once kinda makes me doubt that.
Here's an example of Waymo cars getting "more aggressive" as they try to balance between being too timid and obstructing traffic (including emergency vehicles) and being too dangerous:
archive.ph/JJuGv
Here's another example of passing stopped schoolbusses leading to a software recall:
abcnews.go.com/GMA/News/waymo-
In the first article, Waymo claims 91% fewer serious accidents per mile. Obviously an independent audit would be actually trustworthy, but even if we take that claim at face value, it's meaningless if an update tomorrow causes 100,000 accidents.
Note that they could be using better engineering practices, and the fact that they aren't shows that they don't care enough about the risks. They could be deploying new software versions incrementally and slowly, letting new versions rack up lots of miles only on a few vehicles before pushing them to a fleet. The should also have the equivalent of a simulation unit test for "schoolbus is stopped, what do?" and if a software version fails that test, it doesn't make it to the fleet. Clearly they don't have that.
I feel pretty vindicated in my earlier prediction that this tech is a bad idea in the hands of the current advocates.

I know many academics, especially in these dark days, have to deal with worse, but it's obnoxious when the university takes a few years to slowly smother the cost-sharing program that you wrote into your successful grant application. Where I once had the money to hire the undergrad RAs the project needs, I now have enough for maybe a sixth of the planned hours.

ngscopeclient is pretty fast, but it's never fast enough.
NVTX instrumentation has been super handy for helping to understand what's going on and which shaders are bogging things down.
I really need to make the CDR PLL both faster and not have artifacts at block boundaries. That's my single biggest pain point at the moment.
I'd love to find more people to help out with this side of things eventually. But where the heck do I find an AAA game shader developer …

NSight Systems profiler showing ngscopeclient ingesting streaming waveform data from a ThunderScope, with each waveform clearly visible as a burst of activity
Profiler zoomed in to show a single filter graph execution with the subtract and clock recovery running single-threaded, then many blocks executing simultaneuously after they finish

See, this — •this• — is what ICE CBP are actually for under this regime. •This• is why they got a budget the size of Russia’s entire military.
It’s nothing to do with immigration. It’s about the would-be dictator having his own private military that:
- can be deployed domestically
- at will
- unbeholden to the UCMJ etc
- or disciplined military culture
- or any accountability whatsoever
- with unpredictably violent behavior
- applied indiscriminately
- to anyone
- so that the entire population is terrified of it
…because for them, the problem with Jan 6 was that the coup wasn’t violent enough and didn’t have enough weapons.

The video clip posted last week on social media by Rogelio Martinez,
a mayoral candidate for the city of Long Beach, was short and to the point:
"I need to see 55 gang leaders here this coming Monday,
we need to take back our city,
enough is enough,
ICE needs to get out of Long Beach
and this is the only way that I know how to get them out;
peacefully, but with strong force, but peacefully."

(1) This is horrific.
(2) Please note that the supposed “fraud” is a small kernel of genuine concern wrapped in a massive blanket of bullshit. It cannot be repeated often enough. Because the actual amount of fraud is greater than zero, reporters keep making a show of Taking It Very Seriously — but when the actual fraud is…what, 1% the size of BS they’re making up??…well, taking it more than 1% seriously is a failure of reporting.

Infosys co-founder
NR Narayana Murthy
called for Indian workers to adopt a 70-hour week last year,
-- but he thinks that’s still not enough and wants to take things further.
Speaking during a recent interview,
Murthy called for an increase in working hours from 70 to 72.
That number represents the total hours worked by those on the infamous '996' schedule,
which involves working from 9am to 9pm, six days a week.
This approach, Murthy not…
