Content warning: NZ ACC 'AI' use

Ugh. Listening to Kathryn Ryan interviewing someone from ACC on RNZ's NineToNoon. They talk about 'AI' like it's magic and there seems to be no actual understanding. No questioning whether it's a good idea or bad, what the implications might be, the dependencies it creates, etc. Seems like the inept leading the inepter.

After all, I'm just happy that I wrote this blog post. I often simply use the blog to "offload" a thought process out of my brain. No matter if someone reads it.

I'm listening to the audiobook of *Vaccines: Are They Worth a Shot* by Andrea Grignolio. The book is ... fine, but the translation from Italian was either by a non-fluent speaker or a bad AI. The wrong word or phrase is often used, and it's jarring. For instance, the narrator says "exasperate" for "exacerbate," and "... attributed this cause to the deaths ..." when English would say, "... attributed the deaths to this cause ..."

- 1944: 47 cm of snow hit Toronto in a single day. Unfortunately, the Canadian Army was overseas.
- 1971 Montreal: 45 cm of snow on March 4th & wind gusts of 110 km/h. 200 Ski-Doo owners provided emergency transport.

Listening to CBC Radio Barrie this morning and they were interviewing the manager responsible for housing starts for the Town of Innisfil. The discussion was about missed targets for housing starts and what can be done to get back on track. You could tell that he was frustrated, but the reason for less homes being built was almost solely put on the downturn in the housing market. No one is buying, so private industry isn't building.
All levels of government are throwing money at the problem, with most of it incentivizing for-profit companies to put shovels in the ground. At some point, the Federal, Provincial, and Municipal governments have to realize that public housing, government leasehold development, co-operative housing, or subsidized family apartments must be considered to solve the housing shortage. Private industry will never have the same objectives of getting families into homes - without a calculation of significant profits first.

You want to plan things without these people listening in, because they might try and stop you from doing them, or punish you if you succeed.
So, it's worth figuring out how to use new technologies, because the existing ones are riddled with censorship and surveillance back-doors ("parental controls") that can be deployed …

Listening to the Drilled podcast this morning, I am reminded that we who think of ourselves as climate activists do not bear the responsibility for saving the planet -- and should not bear the guilt of passing the point of no return -- on our own.
It is everyone's responsibility -- and perhaps especially, it's those who see themselves as national or world leaders' responsibility.
Yes, we've failed the big test. But we're not alone.

Ugh, listening to RNZ right now - Kathryn Ryan talking to a US correspondent, who's just stated, with what sounds like a straight face, that US Republicans are saying that the reduced tax on wealthy people will 'trickle down' to poor people. And Kathryn didn't even question the legitimacy of that concept. Come on Kathryn, you need to call this stuff out. Stop the gormless credulity please.

I love that everyone has different unique tastes. And many people will probably find some of the things on my favorite albums list this year to be bizarre and unpleasant. But some of the things on some of these other (mainstream AND indie) 'best albums of 2025' lists.. whew. I can't even imagine listening to these ONCE, much less multiple times 😂

This evening I have been listening to one of @… 's podcasts and thinking about my failure in trying to lead the village's planning working group, and about the cognitive dissonance underlying my Tricycle project. I suspect this essay will be a grim read; it's not well formed in my mind as I sit down to write.
